Yeah, yeah, Iknow, first post and on the beg...

    HAI SEAN!

  2. Draft puts me in a weird place. It's a much harder listen for me than Confield; part of that is because Draft approaches your expectations a little asymptotically, and ultimately just subverts them. Whereas Confield primes you for abstraction early and stays in that mode. Confield is less frustrating in that sense. Lentic Catachresis should be more disturbing than Reniform Puls, but Reniform Puls makes me much more uneasy.

Large parts of Draft also seem to move in the opposite direction of Untilted. Draft moves from relatively straightforward to epic fragmentation. Untilted kind of gathers fragmented pieces together and ends in a more traditional/cohesive place. It's a more listener-friendly development. They both have tracks that deviate from that formula, but the contrast between the two feels pretty deliberate to me.

For example, Surripere seems to be a very deliberate microcosm of the Draft idea of development and deconstruction. Augmatic Disport kind of represents the opposite movement (compare the first minute to the last minute). And something like Bine represents the Confield idea of total, immediate immersion into the alien for the duration.

None of that renders Draft less brilliant (and, arguably, it might render it more so). It's just a tricky one to handle. Requires a delicate balance between active listening and just getting carried along. I'm not surprised its placement on ae-preference lists is so variable.

Edit: Then again, Confield was my first ae album, around 2001. So maybe that's why it seems more digestible to me.

    Uhh, OVERSTEPS.

  3. 1. Draft/ Confield/Untilted / [Glasgow Art School]

    2. Chiastic Slide / Envane / Cichlisuite / Gantz Graf / EP7 / Oversteps (not sure yet)

    3. LP5 / Both Peel Sessions / Anti EP / Quaristice + Versions / Garbage / Anvil Vapre

    4. Tri Rep / We R

    5. Amber / Quadrange

    6. Incunabula / Basscad EP

That's about as granular as I can make it, which is not very. No value attached to horizontal order. It would probably be totally different tomorrow. Everything down to level 4 inclusive is loved immensely, to the point the ordering feels artificial. 5 and 6 are great but seem objectively lower in quality.

Edit: Tri Rep should probably be @ 3, but what the fuck.

  4. Yeah, the whole thing really grew on me this last listen. I love this album. I still want to underplay it until the WAV release, but it's going to be a tough slog.

Edit: unrelated note, Adult Swim just used Pro Radii on a bumper card while I was writing about teh awtekkers.

  5. I was thinking more along the lines of a controlled leak to prevent higher quality leaks, therefore driving interest in the high-quality product (the one you pay for). But that's too conspiratorial; the truth usually outs pretty quickly once the final product actually exists; info wants to be free, etc.

I can't see them releasing a promo copy that didn't have the final product. I don't think they're money-grubbing assholes, but I don't think they (or more accurately, Warp) are totally careless about marketing the product with reviewers.

I could see RDJ releasing something fucked up in lieu of the real deal, but not really Autechre. They always seem to care/obsess about proper versioning and packaging and presentation(see Quaristice, control over soundboards.)

Edit: the YUOP fuck-up is just so glaring.

  6. hmm, id be really surprised if what i was listening to was enhanced from that original m4a. the consensus here is that this is 128kbps right?

I probably haven't been paying enough attention, but is there something out there other than the cut up version or versions of the m4a?

The fact that Bleep hasn't (or someone at Warp won't allow Bleep to) release the WAVs yet is starting to feel fishy. It's like a jacked up file was released intentionally jacked up. If the only watermarking is a repeated ilanders (or other tracks), that would be pretty easy to cut around, and surely another promo would have leaked by now.

I'm definitely not saying these are fake tracks, as they are obviously the real shit, just that of this some stuff still smells off somehow. Seems to violate chaotic net-leak rules, and feels a little managed.

  7. Yeah, the SR60s are kind of universally considered great entry level audiophile headphones. The Sennheiser PX100s are also cheap and good, and even more portable. Neither of them isolate, though. But closed headphones are usually pretty terrible until you get to the mid-to-high end Denons, although I've heard the Shure SRH440s are decent.

Obviously there's a lot of snake oil shat about at places like head-fi.org, but getting a nice clean source with decent amplification and decent headphones is really all you need. The payoff for stuff like Autechre is pretty huge, if you want Bine to sound like an alien winged multipenis tearing into your parietal lobe, which you TOTALLY DO.

  8. I totally agree. I don't have a crazy audiophile set up by most standards, but I've got a really nice Apogee DAC with a great headamp stage and some pretty nice Sennheiser and Grado headphones and semi-decent studio monitors, and the Oversteps leak sounds incredibly. . . squashed and flat through all of them. Even stuff like sound staging, which is usually very impressive in Autechre's work (even Quaristice) sounds really dull. The sound design is pretty much ruined, and until I hear the physical/WAV copy sound this bad, I can't really believe that Autechre of all people would go this route with their sound.

Basically, it just seems like whatever captured the original audio feed wasn't really a very professional piece of equipment. It's not completely horrible, but it's really doing a disservice to some of the best aspects of Autechre-- and you can sort of tell those aspects are there, just not represented properly.

Edit: that's not to say that other people can't dig what they've got now; it's just not working for me.

  9. that guy just goes on and on and on  bish bosh? ding dang dong? WHAT IS HE EVEN SAYING

in other news, i've stopped listening to oversteps until bleep releases their files. i can't stand this low quality stuff, especially when you can TELL that there's things going on in the background. it's gonna be hard to stay away from known(1), oy!

    Motherfucker supported.

The sound quality is pretty pisspoor, Mr. Hauntingsoul. Obviously it'll sound even worse if you transcode it down to 128. The crossfades, if nothing else (oh yeah, the fucking file corruption) make this way too unsatisfying for me to approach and appreciate.
