Please, if you’re seriously worrying about the singularity, you should get off social media for a month. What you should be worried about however, is your job. Thats the only part of the hype that should keep you on your toes. All the other stuff, lets call them the @Alcofribas trigger points, you can ignore freely. To name a few: consciousness, sentient, awareness. Ignore them not just for yourself. But also for the sanity of said watmm regular. And myself. ?

i don’t think we can so easily ignore the Alco Trigger Points (ATP) bc this hyperbolic language is how the tech is being sold to us, i.e., in such a way that we are enchanted by new technology that will ultimately just be used like any other: for domination by the ruling class.

sadly, we live in a society where a dipshit tech bro from stanford can eat an edible, come up with a worthless idea that all-powerful AI can improve laws by making them “more complex,” receive billions in funding, government green-lighting (maybe he buys clarence thomas a nice treat), and lo!, now you’re in prison for 6.3.5.67 months bc you’re Law App (tm) tracked your every move and found you to be in violation AIL77B-7 for saying “fuck Bezos” in front of your Alexa.

  2. tbh it’s tempting to see this as the natural outcome of an educational system that prioritizes memorization over learning and a society which denigrates “the humanities” as a bunch of irrelevant, unprofitable emo shit.

you end up with a tech industry saying their search engine is a brain and it’s the most powerful intelligence ever created. bc it stores all the stuff from online.

  3. why would feeding a machine a bunch of data from the internet produce intelligence, autonomy, consciousness, etc.?

what does it mean to say a machine can "do anything in the domain of information?"

what does it mean to say something like chatgpt is a "brain," and is this terminology appropriate or meaningful?

i think there's a tremendous amount of fluff and bullshit coming out of the tech world about this. a lot of it seems founded on the premise that a brain is just a computer, knowledge is just data collection, and intelligence is just organizing this data. and here data is just whatever...from the internet? come on. the hype is constantly saying humans are dumb compared to a computer, bc a computer stores more website data. seems incredibly stupid, to me.

i'm not sure if anyone itt has messed with chatgpt but when you "test" it on subjects you're very familiar with, it consistently demonstrates that it is bordering on completely useless. constantly churning out gibberish, bullshit, disorganized information, absurd inaccuracy, etc. it doesn't even have the "intelligence" to simply say "lmao idk." it's a massive search engine designed to provide results in the form of "answering a question."

i'm highly skeptical this will produce anything outside of massively destroying our minds with misinformation and being used by the ruling class to dominate and oppress society.

not angry or mad about it, just kinda disappointed. ?

sorry, didn’t mean to be rude to you.

we’ve had this debate throughout the thread so all I can say about this specific aspect is that I have loads of cassettes of music I made in my teens and early 20s. I only ever have this to friends. if somehow I became very successful I would absolutely never want that stuff released. for various reasons. seems normal.

it's specifically about releasing a compilation of their earlier works, something they have explicitly hinted at and talked about numerous times. that's what my original post is about.

    sorry they hurt you

id be interested in hearing some unreleased tunes but imo I don’t really care to have Official releases of AFOT, OTv2, R35T. boc maxima. Those have existed so long as digital bootlegs that to me, that’s just what they are for us. I’m fine with that.

would love to hear stuff like the acoustic MHTRTC and the numerous full albums worth of stuff they’ve hinted at for sure but I’m not mad about it

    i totally agree

even if we've been spoiled by other extremely prolific artists, BOC has been teasing at releasing old compilation albums since 2001 (or maybe even earlier). it's a bit ridiculous.

what are we talking about here, exactly?

in real life if I went about telling close friends (or in this case their fanbase) a load of bullshit then sooner rather than later they would not be my friends anymore.

as a fan, i am a close friend of the brothers…

also this line of reasoning is flawed bc the brothers are always saying their actual close friends have like hundreds of unreleased boc albums.

this absence is not entirely without precedent, right? MBV released *two* LPs and then simply stopped putting out music for like 50 years. another band that comes to mind is portishead. also seefeel. by comparison boc are rather prolific.

idk what they're up to. just living their lives i suppose. but they are not obligated to release music to the public imo. i understand it's more "normal" for recording artists to put out albums every couple of years but why should that be normal for boc? they're doing their own thing. would be utterly amazing to hear some New Tunes but we have nothing to complain about considering the amazing worlds of music we have from them in our life time thusfar.

imo they have always been outsiders in a way. they’ve always done their own thing. even when they started releasing music on skam and warp, they were the special sensitive boys that made us cry like little children and go wild into obsessive conspiracies behind their albums. it would probably kind of suck if they just did the same old thing as many artist do - just churning out records, touring, doing RBMA interviews, popping up on boomkat every coupla months. these boys aren’t meant for this urban world, they’re busy in the woods and shit.

  9. here are some Lush Library Pads for us. this selection is mostly Without Beats.

i fucking love this one. the brushed percussion creates this beautiful sense of motion, like wind blowing through tall grass. the bass is utterly wild and groovy. the synths splash around like starlight. and the pads just Melt you into Milkiness:

gorgeous, pensive tune. like a labyrinth of sweet memories hidden within a millisecond of thought:

cold, "digital" feelings stretching your mind across a vast space of Sweet Emptiness. this one is like a crisp winter sky:

this one is utterly crazy lmao. this is like when the machines are grinding away at their jobs but the human spirit Flows through it all:

this is the sound of a Majestic Future where Progress has set us Free:

are these technically pads? i think so! here we have a beautiful stroll through the city at night. not a care in the world, you have your special someone on the mind, flush with cash, life feels like a dream. (Features the elusive Mono Pad):

a lush String Pad. every sound in this tune is so Soft and Lush. everything is so pleasantly Warm and Kind:

the first chord change in this one utterly destroys me. it's so perfect with the melody floating over the top like some kind of Delicate fluttering being. sad, majestic:

let's let Claude close out this post. one of the real Masters in the library world. how can you not feel the Lushness here? beautiful:

  10. @Enthusiast fuck mate i forgot all about that luke slater track. insanely lush. that's a different version to the CD i had back in the day.

Observation: as far as Lush Pads go, i prefer them with beats. there's something about how the contrast enhances the feelings of sweetness, longing, impossibility. don't get me wrong, i love lush pads without beats, too! but with beats you don't get them in isolation, which enhances the feeling of the elusive which is part of the experience of longing - something you can't quite have in its entirety, it always escapes you.

    what does everyone else think?

this track and the last one on the ep are such beautiful examples of this style for them - crunchy beats, less metallic and more like rock or concrete; with these really smooth pads like a kind of muted color amidst the grey. truly top tier stuff from the masters.

  12. ok everyone, this is it. this is the thread for posting lush pads. i'm talking pads that are ether, emotion, cum. these are pads you almost can't hear so much as you feel. emotion. we want pads that make you cry, that make your stomach ache in such a sensual and beautiful way, that fill you with a sense of impossible longing.

    i'll start.

string pad that comes in around 2:25 here is utterly unbelievable it's the definition of warmth:

another one from the plaid brothers. a chorus strings pad that's like remembering so many things at once:

the fsol brothers. damn this one is Pure Silk. the mix here is perfection. rolling beat, massive unison bass, and The Pad pulling you deep inside. prob one of my favorite tunes:

dude, you can't fuck with this. this track is some masterful shit. the deep liquidity of the drums and bass. and the gorgeous vocal pad just LIFTING YOU UP. fuck man. this is transcendence. if you like the sound of this pad you must also listen to "it's the music":

another chorus pad. admittedly the bass and vox are doing some serious heavy lifting here but come on, imagine this track without that pad layer just giving you that Floating Feeling:

this one is called "lush culture." he knows what he's doing here. this is the feeling of a perfect summer night in the city:

this one is an excellent example of subtle and witholding, giving you just enough of that sweetness to tug your emotions right out:

imagine hearing this and you're in love and shit. fucking a man*:

so human nature is one of the best songs, obviously. but this turns the whole tune into a pad world and it's truly enveloping and VIBING with POSITIVITY:

    make it last forever:

*NB: i wrote "fucking a man" but i meant like in the sense of "fuckin a, man" like you would say to dudes. but i'm leaving it in for my brothers and sisters who get joy out of fucking men.

  13. there are two possible schools of thought here:

    1. The watmm school: all boards of canada leaks are fake up to and including official releases by Warp records. only MHTRTC and Geoggadi are real.

    2. the twosim school: all possible sounds are convincing unreleased boc albums.

  14. the autechre brothers are visiting the sand dunes (or whatever) from the cover of amber after all these years. they scramble up the ("silver") side, sliding and "slip"ping as they get "further" to the top. reaching the peak they look across the landscape. sean from autechre says "check this out" and he does the autechre signature (TM) snow kick. rob laughs, says "lmao" and then they both try to kick the sand together to create the classic image. suddenly the mood changes. melancholic. amber was released 60 years ago! looking across the landscape now feels both like looking back over the expanse of their lives gone by and looking into the ultimate horizon. death. at this moment perhaps a tear is shed by both men, a teartear.

rob suddenly bends down, pulls out a decrepit minidisc player from the sand. sean looks intently with eyebrows raised, not quite believing the sight in front of him. rob (robert?) dusts off the minidisc machine. they both scrutinize it. it's unmistakable. "PRORPERTY OF BOOTH/BROWN" is scratched into the metallic surface. rob pulls out a pair of headphones and plugs them in. the brothers huddle together pressing the "cans" to their ears and press PLAY. they are shocked. this is the original Amber minidisc, lost all these years only to be found at this special site. one of the Designers Republic lads must have dropped it here when they were snapping the photo for the cover. mental.

they listen to the entire album, standing together as though frozen to the spot. rob takes the headphones and puts them back in his pocket (northface jaccket). sean chucks the minidisc player into the sand. "this one's kinda cheesy," rob says solemnly, looking once more into the distance. sean says nothing, staring straight ahead while smoking (or whatever it's called) from his "vape pen." the brothers quickly descend the sandy slope, leaving the minidisc behind. the sun sets as they hop onto their electric scooters and zip off into the darkness.
