  1. ^in camp. man 3 is hard to pin down. to me it's easily the most inconsistent as a whole, be it in style or "quality". slpesh and fLh are silly and annoying, which obviously is the point. the question is do they hold up as tracks rather than elaborate jokes? not sure tbqh. they're the dougie joneses of NTS sessions (thank god they don't make up 3/4 of it at least tho). sorry for the negativity, just not feelin those, at least not now. there's plenty of amazingness on this. initial top tier: tt1, acid mwan, glos and nineFly. icari is currently growing. wow really? The second half of splesh is absolutely incredible, and fLh is in the running for my fav track on this session.
  2. I'm not sure if I like it more than session 2 yet, but on the other hand I'm far more addicted to listening to it than session 2. Regardless I think it's fair to say that it's by far the most interesting session so far.
  3. After another 2 goes through, this one is growing on me. I can't stop listening. Even nineFLY gets pretty neat after you know what to expect a bunch of times. That growly rumbly bassline is super cool. I'm going to have a hard time picking my fav on here. glos ceramic, clustro casual, splesh, tt1pd, fLh and icari are all contenders I would say.
  4. Gotta double post when I get touched by the meme gods
  5. I'm 99.999% sure that there's a modem dial-up sample going on in glos ceramic at about 8:52. You can only hear it when the higher static sound is playing but I swear to god it's there.
  6. glos ceramic is downright the most evil and horrifying thing I've ever heard. So good. someone explain nineFLY to me though, I like the bassline going on for sounding so evil but the melody makes absolutely no sense to me.
  7. I'm on my third pass of this stuff now, so here's some initial thoughts. This is fucking weird. Like even by Autechre standards this session is WEIRD AF. But then also there are some bits that are kind of normal (?). There are some excellent tracks on here, and there are some supreme head scratchers as well. I'm not sure what it's going to take for me to wrap my head around nineFLY. Same goes for acid mwan idle. On first impressions it may be my least favorite of the 3 sessions thus far, but also I expect I'll be chewing on it's mysteries for longer than the prior two.
  8. Bill & Ted: "Did somebody say 'high frequencies'?"
  9. This track's got a bunch of "No Border" sounds on it.
  10. If this one has no gonk then we're going to need to storm the gates, boys. Also can this just become a weekly thing forever now?
  11. Yeah I don't think it's an age thing, I'm 29. It's also not THAT the frequencies are ultra high pitched, that in and of itself doesn't really cause me problems (see gelk for instance), nor is it the sharpness/shrillness of the sound (I fucking love netlon sentinel and it does not bother me at all) it's more to do with the overall mix of these problem tones. When it's a problem it's like they are significantly louder than the rest of the track, and generally burst in unannounced (see the 3rd quarter of gonk steady one. See 15:40 for a particularly nasty instance). So yeah, it's less about the high frequencies themselves, and more about the mix. I estimate the tones that are generally the problem are around 2-4khz but I haven't had too much success cutting those with an EQ. I'll play around a bit more though and see if I can pinpoint the problem. Obligatory "I'm not hating I'm actually totally in love with this release so far" disclaimer.
  12. "I think Autechre is close to what would take place if Tool started making techno." I love tool as much as the next person but that's an insult to Ae.
  13. I went to a metal show when I was 20 ish, and I stood right next to a PA there for the hour or so of the set. TO THIS DAY I find everything I listen to sounds slightly louder in my right ear than my left, to the extent that I sometimes use EQ to pan music to the left a little just so it sounds balanced for me. I wish I had worn earplugs. Now that I generally do wear them, I find I enjoy the shows better and can hear things much more clearly.
  14. Hey, You are not alone in that . I find it really hard to listen to Mesh CinereaL as it almost 'hurts' my ears / brain... i've wondered if it is just a pain of processing that weird resonance effect (i.e. my brain hurts when it processes the visual) or if its actually my cells dying from being exposed to loud high freqs. I haven't had the exact same effect listening to this one yet but have found myself turning it up and turning it down so now you mention it there is probably something to it. I'm seeing them in a few months and can only imagine that wearing ear plugs is a bad idea but don't wanna get an audio spear through my head either ... anyone had experience in a live setting recently and if plugs are in fact a terrible , terrible idea. Last time i wore plugs was at Sunn o))) and thank Christ i was. I took them out just for a little bit at one time and felt my brain being carved out I find that live music almost always sounds better with earplugs anyway. Like, you can hear the entire spectrum much more clearly where I find things get particularly distorted without earplugs a lot of the time. That said, I've seen them live thrice now and I don't think I had earplugs any of the times. It was loud sure, but not like legal liability loud like some of the metal shows I've been to. I would say bring a set, and compare. If it sounds fine with them in, do your ears a favor and wear them.
  15. Something struck me as a mild annoyance today, that I realized has kind of been the case for many tracks here on NTS, as well as elseq. That's the boys' cavalier attitude towards extremely loud high frequency noises. I can't find many examples off the top of my head except gonk steady one at 16:15 (and plenty of other parts) and mesh cinereaL's general high end loudness but I know I've had this thought many times while listening to the NTS sessions the last few days. I'm sitting there listening at work and I feel like I've really gotta just turn the volume down all of the sudden because of some unexpected 2-4khz burst of loud noise. This is not a get off my lawn thing, I actually think NTS is shaping up to be my fav ae release yet, and gonk steady one is probably my fav track of the lot so far, but that high end stuff is really grating on my ears. Does anyone else feel this way or am I broken?
  16. Nice. We woke up to 10mm of ice covering every surface. Power lines were down all over the city, took me almost half an hour to chip all the ice off my car. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ottawa-s-april-2018-ice-storm-in-pictures-and-video-1.4575934
  17. I'm going to try and clear all my meetings this thursday morning so I can work from home and listen completely uninterrupted.
  18. While NTS might not be their most accessible release to date, have you ever heard of this little album called Confield? I find Confield much much more accessible than the NTS sessions thus far. While this conversation is at jeopardy of disappearing down the bumhole of subjectivity, I really can't understand how you'd find Confield more accessible. It has almost no similar sounds/rhythms/melodies to any other semi-mainstream music. NTS has a pile of tracks that one might boil down to "A bunch of strange autechre-like sounds threaded together by a relatively traditional electro/techno beat". North Spiral, Gonk Steady One and Four of Seven, Six of Eight, would all sound slightly familiar to someone who had a background in other electronic genres. The only mainstream touchstones I can think of in Confield is like the first 8 seconds of pen expers.
