    seems that you read my mind, you described pretty well the hyperpop culture, congrats!

    I'm a very quintessential millenial that grew up on the internet, stuck in a house on a cul-de-sac because my parents were convinced, and thus so was I, that I would be kidnapped or subject to violence on the rough streets of an Oregonian suburb. Ipso facto I lived on a PSX, Gameboy Color, and eMachine with classic games of that era, edutainment (remember this?), Napster, and Toonami.

    I'm glad I could summarize it in a way that you agree with. It makes the world feel more connected.

    I really like a lot of things that have come out of the general "Hyperpop" sphere, if only for its artistic influence and how a lot of it feels like it's taking ownership of feelings that music that the producers (who are close to my cohort) shared when they heard the same electronic I grew up on. Maybe different for me being in the western states, but a lot of permeated was tied to video games or the Eurodance hits that would break into radio play. It comes across as a deconstruction and done with such a hyperfocus on meeting a certain aesthetic that I end up appreciating it, even if it's either taking itself too seriously or not at all (often hard to discern). One of my younger friends, that I met being confined to my room during my college years playing video games until the sun came back up and I would have to rush to get my school work done before catching public transit to my lectures, knowing full well I wouldn't be home again until after closing shop at 11 pm, was sending me early Hannah Diamond tracks and talking about it. I didn't think much of it sounded good, kind of like they were all unfinished demo tracks. 

    I can't help but feel like some of this is like a(n) (more) electronic response to Death Grips. A lot of "interesting" min-max going on in the soundscape, maybe a weird comparison. It feels like there's a lot of talent in this production that's not set on chasing money and more set on chasing an idea, which I appreciate.

    I've been listening to a lot of Danny Harle (a producer in the early years of the PC Music collective), and he absolutely grabs the evocation of what I remember feeling when I first started hearing techno tracks that resonated with me. It really throws me back into being a tween and loving this stuff, feeling like a complete nerd-loser-outcast playing DDR in my bedroom because I wasn't allowed to have friends over when my parent wasn't home during my latchkey bullshit years with Dirty Vegas, Groove Armada, Ace of Base, BT, and Eiffel 65. Uniquely it completely avoids all the feelings that Daft Punk gave me in those formative years; prior to my delving into more experimental music that eventually led me here. I'm going to take this little moment here to say the Super Monkey Ball 2 soundtrack is full of nothing but breakbeat bangers, hot damn.

    The whimsy, chasing the nostalgia, really feels to have come out of the Vaporwave movement. I remember people wondering if early PC Music could still be considered vaporwave.

     

    I remember getting sent this awhile back, and it's not good (my opinion), but boy does it feel like a proto version of a lot of this, this is the shitpost part of my post (though there are a few good tracks in here).

    Oh yeah! The leaked version of Variance is very good. I do have a lot of thoughts on it that I'm sure some of you will share in. It's such a swath of music and WIP that it's actually great; it's probably a selfish thought but I wish we saw this happen more often, but only in the sense of getting to hear beta version of tracks/albums to see how they changed. This particular album has the mythos of how long it took after the leak to see light added to it on top of Jega's strong-but-few releases. Almost nothing sounds like his music, even despite so many of the sounds being all around the scene (what with the breaks and softer synth sounds), his productions are all uniquely his.

    The original Aerodynamic is massive. The version that made it onto the final release is definitely more polished, which I sincerely think the track did deserve in many ways. The leaked version really needed some mixing and sound engineering love that is present in the final. Did the 1 minute long intro need to become a thing? No, it became rather theatrical, but it's a more realized track and is still massive. I'm a huge fan of how it starts to deconstruct in the latter third.

    Bicubi is renamed to Aqueminae. It swells more in the background, the original is more subdued but both are very pretty.

    Haze became Latinhypercube. Haze to me definitely sounds unrealized and needed this. Not to say I don't like it, but it sounds skeletal and like it was pending revision. Really interesting to see the changes applied.

    Whisperplane I think was beta for something else. I can't totally tell right now, fun Jega beats though.

    Intron-x I think be played into Hydrodynamic with Acid and Hydro? I like where it went, I like both. This is a very "versions" thing to me and I like seeing the differences in direction. Acid is massive, I like all three of these but they definitely share a lot of similarities. Hydro and Acid sound very related.

    Indica I think became Shibuya but I don't know. The flow relatively the same throughout. Indica is does feels simple but is pretty.

    BMX is Reprise with less polish. I like Reprise more, this was some really great care added to it.

    Caustic reminds me of Dreams and Zenith in a way. Zenith is one of my favorite tracks on the release after all this time.

    I realize I linked nothing to Chromadynamic, and there's definitely some that are tied to it.

     

    As far as I can tell the following didn't make it out:

    Convolver didn't seem to make it through and that's a shame. This reminds me of the sound from Geometry, which I loved. Fireball really needed some mixing love, or maybe it just sounds kind of bitcrushed. This track is great though and I love the Transformers transforming sample in here that I know he's used elsewhere.

    Ghost didn't make it out. I think it could have, but I kind of see why it didn't. Fun track.

    Mixdown Bass. There's something here and I can hear bits and pieces in various tracks of the final.

    Pass Arani I really enjoy, probably one of my favorites, but could go somewhere. Shame.

    Pixel is pleasant.

    shaft is fun, maybe didn't want to release it because of the sample?

    Theme is an amen banger with a great synth line and cuts.

     

    On the final release I absolutely love:

    SoulFlute, The Girl Who Fell to Earth, Dreams, Zenith, Shibuya, Chromadynamic, Aerodynamic, Latinhypercube, Hydrodynamic, Reprise.

    I find the safest thing of his to go back to at all times for me is the Hospitality EP or The Chocolate Wheelchair album. Not that I don't personally still listen through most of his stuff, but those are what I would outwardly give to someone that doesn't want his Rossz style things or the other "this is too serious" stuff.

    This thread makes me feel old as fuck.

    I use the burger for things I view as shitposts. That doesn't mean I think they're good or bad, but usually funny in a way where I'm definitely thinking, "ahaha, what a shitpost, Mark!"
