What do people here think of Suno?

Recommended Posts

I just discovered this software the other day, it's honestly insane how good it is at generating music.  I was able to get it to pump out quite a bit of vaporwave, lo-fi hip hop, and ambient tracks without much trouble: link

Obviously this isn't really that new or surprising, this has been coming for a while, but I'm blown away at how good it is at what it does.

Anybody here have any thoughts on what this means for music and music listeners?  Seems like it could be good for music in the sense that this will push artists to be less formulaic and more experimental or adventurous in their creativity, but it could hurt the bottom line for a lot of musicians for hire and help contribute to the corporate-approved nature of pop culture.

Pretty soon, we'll have tools like this integrated inside DAWs, so you could easily incorporate this into your workflow sometime soon.  Some of the songs I prompted under the IDM tag were pretty interesting, and I may build upon them as an experiment to hear how that turns out.  So, while this will cause a lot of problems, I think real artists are going to use these tools in truly exciting ways.  Do you think that would take away from your enjoyment of the piece at that point?

each one of those sounds like it was ripped from a montage of an 80s movie. but like.. not as good. i think someone mentioned Sonu on the AI thread.

oh, it's definitely not as good.  i kinda want to train my ear to be able to recognize sonu, kinda like how you can recognize midjourney and chat gpt in different images or writings.

i'm sure it'll only get better.. this is the worst it will be. hopefully we all get better at figuring out which is which.

oh, for sure.  the refined product will be mind-blowing for musicians and music listeners.  we're on the cusp of a huge shift in music (and culture and art as well, of course).
i do think it's a hilarious tool for joking around with your friends.  link 1 / link 2

  • snack master changed the title to What do people here think of Suno?

Suno is frustrating to me because it doesn't seem to know what power pop is, like sometimes it sounds kind of country? And then I try to be more clear but it gives me this https://app.suno.ai/song/e4b49b8f-00cc-41d2-8775-919472372d31/ how can I make it more clear to suno what I want to hear

If you ask it for quirky twee indie, NO PROBLEM, it can nail that https://app.suno.ai/song/892ec5cf-b8b8-4cab-984b-f1903b984bf1/ and it can do some incredible work with 60s british invasion pop rock https://app.suno.ai/song/d18c8e52-a7b0-4d4d-9a82-68953677588f/ but if you ask it for power pop it looks at you like you're crazy.

At the moment it's like a lot of other AI art, surprisingly polished on a technical level but pretty empty on an artistic level. Like Midjourney stuff tends to look like slightly cringey poster shop stuff. Good for places where art & music are just a placeholder but not more than that.

Of course this stuff is all evolving fast. Maybe it will be blowing us away with its insane creativity a year from now?
