waldorf attack is a pretty good at drum synthesis, but it's not a freeware plug-in. Crystal vst is also an all-around great subtractive and FM synth, but it is, for me, sort of a cpu hog.

I'll just list some of the ones I use the most.

Juno X2 - really powerful multi oscillator aggressive bass synth (very unique)

Transcender - Nice Junoesque digi synth ... again good for meaty basses with a bit of bite

Beast - This can really be good for serious bass if used well ... has 4 oscillators

Minimogue VA - Minimoog synth emulation (really rounded vst)

MDA Vst Fx collection - low on processor usage and all very handy

TAL-U-NO-60 - nice range of sounds can be produced from this ... not too heavy on cpu either

Subhuman - for serious sub weight

CheezeMachine - low on cpu. emu of arp string machine. real nice.

Dubsiren - Dub siren fx.

Dblue Crusher - bit crusher

Dblue Stretch - time stretching on tap (but prolly more fun to do shit in Soundforge i reckons)

loads more but there's a list for starters ;)
