I have difficulty believing in something that of which there is no manifestation that can not also be (better) explained by science and laws of nature.

So materialism all the way.

I am my brain and that is it.

let's say for the sake of this thread that dualism is the belief in anything supernatural, that cannot ever be explained by science, no matter how far we progress technologically.

materialism is the idea that all there is is matter and energy, and all phenomena can be explained by physical processes.

ps: thanks chen

Supernatural is a very tricky word ..

If it is happening .. its natural .. Just because we don't know it, doesn't mean is Unnatural or Supernatural ..

Let's not get into semantics here.

You know what he meant.

Besides, if a certain event does not conform to the laws of nature as we know them it could be considered supernatural.

yes please i don't want to get into a discussion on what exactly these mean or any subtleties within, such as eliminative materialism vs reductionism.

let's just have a gentleman's (and bitchez) agreement and get some responses for at least 3 pages (75posts) or so.

materialism is the only game in town

e: (except maybe some weak form of property dualism according to which conscious states aren't themselves material, but are mere epiphenomena nonetheless)

Dualism, by default. Materialists should read the knowledge argument, by Frank Jackson, and get back to me with apologies.

LOL! Read Knowledge Possibility and Consciousness by John Perry to see it utterly refuted.

apparently, even frank jackson admitted the flaws to his argument, according to wiki.

so i am thoroughly unconvinced.
