The White Ribbon

Film of the year easily... The way Haneke's imagery burned into our membranes with those long, static, wonderful raw cuts was brilliant and a lot of those images still pop up into my memory catalog when I have moments of day dreaming through my daily regiment.

as for the ending...

...it's left pretty much open. It's not really the whodunit type theme most people are making it out to be, it's much much mroe. I think those final shots in the church show that there wasn't a specific group or person responsible for the crimes but the entire community. The repression, and early working of fascism that would form that generation of children, those white ribbons, or symbols of purity, into the what would be the Third Reich many years down the road. The final shot is very powerful... the entire community facing us, almost mirroring the audience. Quite brilliant.

I loved it... Spoiler tags don't work on iPhone so I can't see what your problem with the ending was. I liked that the romance storyline actually had some genuine happy moments to it. Also that scene with the kid learning about death was just perfect

I liked it but I didn't think it was as good as any of the films from his French hot streak. I need to see it again but I think but there's a lot to like there, especially the cinematography. My main issue with it is that some of his old tricks are really starting to feel like old tricks at this point. Focusing on the door during that interminable discipline scene felt like a misfire of a technique he'd worn into the ground.

Interesting.

I was hoping O.G. would marry his special lady before the war. I guess he said that thing about his "future father-in-law" or whatever but I was confused if it was actually going to happen or not. I don't remember seeing the teacher in the final shot.

Well there are only two ways of showing that particular scene... either show it or don't. From my experience with Haneke, he does a lot of showing; in this film, it seemed, he did a lot of not-showing which worked very well for the tension/suspense, the films driving points. I personally thought the scene was executed perfectly.
