my hipster bandmate has food stamps, we have used them to get energy drinks and candy before shows. i would guess 75% of the "food" he buys is soda and candy.

this infuriates me. here in los angeles, you go through a rigorous interview process that weeds out people like this. basically, if you're not homeless, severely mentally ill, or if you're not working a minimum wage job with a family to feed, you're not getting food stamps unless you put on a convincing act. there's just not enough government food money to go around.

i've been dirt poor for months at a time, even with a part time job (i lived on $2/day for a month, not counting bus faire); and although i considered going on stamps, in the end i couldn't justify taking food out of someone else's mouth. i had a job, after all, and you won't starve if you spend those $2 wisely.

fuck these people. fuck them in their self-entitled asses.

Sigh,

stupid fucking hipsters. They need more money to go to "underground" shows, like Animal Collective that half the fucking city will be attending.

Not enough details and an article set up to infuriate. If you're able to receive aid, why not? I'd assume there's some fraud going on with a section of the larger group that the folks in the article are part of. I'll bet there's some with working class people without art degrees buying poor people's food too. Tax money's spent on worse stuff than ice cream.

there's a limited amount of aid to go around. even people who are truly down-and-out get turned away in los angeles.

$200 a month is pretty comfy if you don't have any other mouths to feed and you cook at home most of the time.

if you mean $200/month food budget, then yes... but add rent and utilities and the inevitable unexpected expenses that pop up and $200 is really not enough even for a single person.

not that these foodstamp hipsters aren't still assholes stealing from the truly hungry and homeless

i know lots of hipsters on foodstamps. they are smarmy. and you are smarmy for being like 'oh what cunts how smarmy'. live and let live. its up to the city to decide how to divvy this shit out. and NO ONE gets stamps w/o interviews and lots of line standing, even in NYC.

Not sure why this should make me any madder than high school dropouts with 4 kids (that they could never afford) expecting the same handouts.

We don't have many hipsters where I live. We have a lot of young parents who wear their pajamas all day drinking Mountain Dews and smoking cigarettes.

But whatever..

I was on food stamps up until I lost my job. I don't see the problem if you qualify. How starved do you have to be to "deserve" food? It's nasty that we have to judge poverty. It's nasty standing in line next to hipsters and single parents with too many kids, and feeling bitter about the wait. There are plenty of reasons to hate on hipsters, but judging someone for not appearing to qualify for state benefits is self-righteous and ignorant...so hip, right?

This is true. But fauxBoHo Silverlake hipsters can put on a pretty convincing act just by existing as they have been (ie not washing pits and walking in with a PBR-soaked t-shirt), despite their trust funds.

Does Red Lion Tavern take food stamps?

Was that facepalm for my egregious hipster-stereotyping? Because I'd be happy to escort you through Silverlake/Echo Park on a friday night if you'd like. It's become a fairly self-stereotyping scene.

Also, but seriously, lol, I don't know any hipsters on food stamps, but I do know 3 or 7 with trust funds.

actually yeah, they're just as bad. real lumpenprols (omg he's on here but you know the real deal lumpenproletariat lol etc) are cuntholes. there's tonnes perpetually gravitating around the shop up the road from me, swigging Special Brew and chain-smoking while chatting away some asinine gossip in a dialect no educated person can understand, about how immigrants stole the jobs that they'd never actually bother to do themselves anyway.

Ive been using ebt for about a year and a half now. my girlfriend and i both get an allotment every month, and with two kids to feed, they are all used up usually by the middle, every month.

sometimes i feel guilty using it to buy nothing but natural or organic foods, but why would i waste my time and government-funded money to feed the people i love fucking ramen noodles? fuck that! i still have to use money i earn from my slave wages to buy food every month, why not let the obviously loop-hole ridden government, who gave us the money based on factual information to begin with, help promote good health and eating habits? Is it better to send our kids to a school where they make you PAY for high amounts of sodium, high fructose corn syrup, straight up sugar, and many other detrimental and artificial substances?

I wake up everyday thankful that there is a system in place that allows us to live our lives and raise/teach our kids the way we want to (as food is a HUGE part of anybody's life). And whoever said it, there is an immense truth in the statement that our "tax money" is being spent on worse things.

To all you people living in LA, what are you doing living there? If you cant afford food then why the hell would you want to live in one of the most expensive places to live? Move to Memphis mane!
