i genuinely want to know what type of apps make jailbreaking worth it

basically that all apps are free. 2 other great jailbreak apps: firewall and war-driving (to find all WiFi spots around you and see how secure they are). also ifile app giving you access to the file-system and the possibility to download and extract / run files, pictures and music just as you would do on your laptop. you also can use your phone as usb-stick directly or as hot-spot without extra fees from your provider

apps are too numerous to enumerate here, but yes you can get free apps. just using Cydia (default package manager with the Comex jailbreak), there's loads....filesystem access, ssh, truly excellent sms (eg bitesms), lockscreen customizers (intelliscreen, lockscreen), tethering apps, wifi hotspot apps, etc. you can unlock alot of functionality that you won't otherwise find.

 

speaking generally this jailbreak exploits a pdf security hole via safari and roots the phone, granting highest level admin access which allows overrides for apple security features that would otherwise block 3rd party apps and certain features.

 

they released a software update (4.0.2) already which kills this, but you can use it with 4.0.1. There are some security implications to doing this, good to read up first

to go a little further, it doesn't really make the phone more insecure than it already is...obviously there was already a security hole which allowed this Comex jailbreak, which could have been exploited and done damage with by all kinds of unsavory types out there (and still can be if you're on 4.0.1, moreso since it's publicized now). really there's just more potential for trouble through poorly coded or malicious apps that a user may install. but there have been many instances of malicious code slipping under the radar in the apple appstore anyway, so the debate is on. the best thing is just to be careful of what 3rd party apps you're installing, esp. since they will be running as root. this is somewhat analogous to keeping a PC secure / free from malware, it's in large part based on user behavior. no ordinary security in the world is going to keep you safe if you're clicking on bullshit and installing questionable material

iOS 4 has "multitasking" but there are other unsigned apps that do it better
