CDP Soundshaper

ceiling

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of getting Virtual Box and running CDP Soundshaper on it, just wondering whether anyone thinks this is worth doing? I want to get deeper into it and Soundshaper (Only runs on Windows) looks like the easier to use program. I'm on a Mac by the way. Until now I've been using SoundLoom and Terminal for CDP but these two are kind of cumbersome.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated : )

Why not use it in Renoise's sample editor on the mac?

The cdp tool works in the demo afaik; https://www.renoise.com/tools/cdp-interface

edit;

I mean using the cdp programs through a gui front-end in Renoise, not using soundshaper in it :)

I'm in the process of trying to use it in Renoise, however its currently saying check the 'enviroment variables' or something. I'll check the renoise forum unless you know whats up?

Hah, yes the ever irritating variable business..have you checked the link to the mac installation guide listed on the tool page ( dl's a pdf; http://www.unstablesound.net/downloads/Release7-InstallationNotes-MAC.zip )?

Stuff has to be set-up on the mac also depending on what type of OS version you're running, last few pages in the tool thread on the renoise forum ( http://forum.renoise.com/index.php/topic/41882-new-tool-30-cdp-lua-tool/ ) also deal with this problem, hopefully you can get it to work.

Hmmm I've done everything and it's still not working. I get this

usage: cp [-R [-H | -L | -P]] [-fi | -n] [-apvX] source_file target_file

cp [-R [-H | -L | -P]] [-fi | -n] [-apvX] source_file ... target_directory

when I input 'cp /etc/launchd.conf.' into terminal. Does this sound right? I know I should be on the renoise forum for this but I seem to get quicker responses on watmm : )

Sounds like you're trying to run CDP on the config file which obviously is not what you want ! Use a text editor and edit /etc/launchd.conf which is presumably where you have to whack in the environment variables.

Wahooo I got it working. Just had to dump the launcd.config file in to the /etc folder instead of the launch agents folder where I was told to put it originally. Its so good being able to access it directly via renoise. Thank god I took up using renoise as my second DAW a few month ago.

I actually spoke to the guy who created Soundshaper last night, via email. Says hes potentially working on a Mac port for soundshaper which would be sick and great for any Logic and Ableton users. Get behind him cause hes gonna be needing people to test the software when its ready.

Can't get cdp working in renoise Windows 10!

I have it working here in windows 10, make sure you run renoise and cdp programs as administrator...think I've also seen people having trouble with Renoise & windows 10 due to avast anti-virus/firewalll shit...but dunno if that helps you with running this particular tool, you could try giving the renoise & cdp install folders exceptions in the antivirus?

Where have you installed CDP, in your program files folder? You should place it directly in C, the installation address should look like 'C:\cdpr7'.

Also doesn't any process work, for example distort interpolate...or only the fft stuff like the 'blur' programs? Moar info.

edit;

forgot to mention you can also try right-mouse clicking the cdp installation folder, check the 'properties' and toggle 'read only' in the attributes off, press 'apply' in the bottom right and choose 'apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files'. Maybe this can help?

In the security tab you can see the permissions, you can check and change what the user is allowed to do.

I know from using it via soundloom that some processes require the sample to be in mono. For some of the other processes you also have to extract something from the sample to then be able to process it. I don't know whether renoise can perform these functions, haven't used it enough yet. If you have the cash I would recommend a book by Trevor Wishart called Audible Design, goes into specific detail about each function as well as loads of other cool stuff about sound design.

The tool should auto convert the sample to whatever the particular process needs as input, so mono/stereo file problems shouldn't be an issue...maybe bitrate, though any issue will be listed in the tools terminal, giving you info what is the culprit.

The tool auto converts samples with pvoc.exe to .ana files under the hood and resynthesizes them back after using a fft type process, so no need to do manual conversion. With other type of processes that need formant files for example, you can open these inside the process before running the tool using a loading window.

Had a go with permissions and the cdp folder keeps reverting to read only after I have changed it which is weird

notice I have the same thing here, so while strange, it shouldn't block the tool from working.

Any progress with it?

When initializing the tool in Renoise's sample editor, what does it say when you try to run a process, do you get an error notice in the terminal?

An output file was not produced. Check your settings.

What the hells going on! I'm back to square one now. It was working perfectly and then I shut down my laptop, opened it up the next day and its back to Instillation Incomplete, environment variables blah blah. I can do a few processes but nowhere near as many as I could before I restarted my laptop. Any tips?

@ Bendish;

can you try uninstalling the tool from the tool browser in Renoise, install it again and after first boot of the tool, when you have to select the CDP installation folder where the processes reside, make sure you select the _cdprogs folder ( on my computer; "C:\cdpr7\_cdp\_cdprogs").

@ Ceiling; you can also try the above, but you mention some work, some don't so I don't think this is the problem. If the 'distort' processes work, but for example the 'blur' ones don't then it is the variable thing again. You mentioned above that you dropped "launcd.config file in to the /etc folder instead of the launch agents folder where I was told to put it originally" can you try putting the config in the launch agents folder and see if it works? What mac os are you on, mavericks?

mm, things are running out to try....does your Renoise desktop shortcut have the administrator shield in the bottom right of it? If not, you can try right clicking the icon, select properties, go into the compatibility tab and toggle on 'Run this program as an administrator' in the bottom of the window, Then press apply.

Check. Will try. I really want the renoise team to take on cdp and merge it in a friendly way. A fantasy most likely.

don't think that will happen, rather they do something like protoplug vst which will let you do the lua magick straight to the audio buffer ( http://www.osar.fr/protoplug/ ).

..also about your cdp troubles, when trying out if it works, what process do you use and what is the bitrate of the sample you try it on? If 24 bit or higher can you adjust the bitrate to 16 bit and see if it works?

Thanks for your help Djeroek. I managed to get it working again and maybe this might help you @bendish although I do not know how you would do this on windows. Basically I have to manually launch the launchd file every time, before I start Renoise. I type this 'launchctl setenv CDP_SOUND_EXT wav' into terminal. I think it could be a similar problem for @bendish, for some reason our launch.conf file is not loading automatically. Does anyone know why this might be?

I'm on Yosemite by the way and have put the launch.conf In every folder possible. Launch Agents, Launch Daemons and the /etc folder but no matter where I put It, I still have to manually launch it via terminal every time for me to get the full functionality of CDP in Renoise.

Is there a way for you to manually launch your 'launch.conf' file bendish?

I'm on Yosemite by the way..

Saw this on the cdp forum;

I can confirm the problem here. Yet again Apple, having recommended a procedure for adding environment variables, has quietly abandoned it (they say, for security reasons) in Yosemite. There is yet another new recommended procedure. I will announce it separately on the forum, but in the meantime, create a text file called "environment.plist" with the following content:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<plist version="1.0">

<dict>

<key>Label</key>

<string>my.startup</string>

<key>ProgramArguments</key>

<array>

<string>sh</string>

<string>-c</string>

<string>launchctl setenv CDP_SOUND_EXT wav</string>

</array>

<key>RunAtLoad</key>

<true/>

</dict>

</plist>

Copy the file to your Library/LaunchAgents folder and reboot. I have tested this and it does enable the pvoc programs to run both from Terminal and via Soundloom.

In the longer term, we are finalising the process of updating the whole CDP system to make this variable default to wav and so be entirely optional, and this whole rigmarole will no longer be needed.
