  1. Also, the odds of a military coup in the US.... o dear. No, it won't go there. But what if...
  2. No, it will wake people up. Imagine the US in two weeks time being where Italy is at this moment. This shit will be undeniable. This is a lifechanging event. Same holds for Europe, btw. Although I suspect US society is less prepared to deal with a crisis like this. (Eg. No paid leave, weak central government) Could be wrong, but the only options the federal government seems to have are military related and perhaps to pump some money in the economy (most of which aimed at the stock market).
  3. And...Pelosi takes over if election doesnt take place in november...
  4. LOL Too late though. it is already sold out ;D
  5. A mother fucking virtual campaign. Yeah, that's going to work splendid....my god
  6. I guess these "automated, high-volume testing systems capable of processing thousands of samples at a time" are too sophisticated for the US? (i believe the availability of this technology has a bigger impact than the difference between centralized or other systems, btw)
  7. I expect people to be ahead of the curve around here. That means that toilet paper is already being stocked for the coming months, btw. Asking for immunity is a bit much at this point, imo.
  8. Is that an admission to the "moving goalpost"-argument? Or a broader "ok, i'm wrong in general"? Can't believe either, btw. Will we ever find out? Zeff, if you please...
  9. Testing at this point doesn't really do anything if you don't need imminent treatment. It's already known the virus is out there and it is spreading through the community. Even in the US. Regardless of what orange-head says.
  10. in case not clear: a vaccine is not a treatment. it's something to prevent people from getting ill. and developing a vaccine is still a must even if this discovery is going to be a successful treatment option.
  11. sorry for the repost: yes, it can't be contained. regardless of the risk of mutation. UK is currently gone from containment to delay policy. simple as that. wrt spanish flu: i know the second wave was more deadly. don't know whether that had anything to do with mutating. if you've got a credible source i'm all ears. could the second wave be more deadly than the first with mutating though? the answer is an obvious yes. one of the reasons is that as opposed to the first wave, the second wave won't have a single starting-point like the current first wave (started in wuhan). without a single starting point the virus will spread faster and will be way more difficult to control/delay. so there reason the second wave could be more deadly is mostly because of the absolute numbers (instead of the relative numbers)
  12. why? even if that doesn't happen, it makes sense, imo
  13. Silver linings: - odds of reaching climate change agreements more certain thanks to pandemic. thanks to: less traffic, less planes in the air. economy basically at zero. - population will shrink a bit. mainly older gray stuff will fall away. mostly the gop voting "boomers", i guess. including dumpster trump. - the young ones will mostly get through this without real issues (which might mean that snowflake mentality will become the new norm, i'm afraid) - after the coming months - which will be shitty - the sun will come out again ? - repeating trump news: he'll either not survive this politically or physically. take this with a grain of salt please. kthxbuy! ;D
  14. Euh? No. Not even going to bother arguing with that to be honest. Please inform yourself. The information is out there. Take care.
  15. Good to see the Russian Intelligence Agency is still up and running! ?
  16. Have to disagree again, I'm afraid. Running a government is more about doing the right stuff than you're willing to admit. And your focus is too much on the top as well. Rutten stands on the shoulders of entire government agencies. When dealing with a crisis like this, a pm can only rely on those agencies. In the case of Rutten, he does. Whatever you think of him. That's where Trump is different. What you might consider as wielding influence, I consider it braking down the decision process within a government. He just doesn't seem to give a shit about what his experts tell him. Or rather, he fires them if they tell him stuff he doesn't like. That's not wielding influence. That's (mis) using his executive powers. (For which hes already impeached, of course)
  17. Ozzy, right. Yeah, you guys are doing pretty OK down under. Nice and warm weather keeps the virus at bay a bit. If you want to understand the hype though, try to imagine living in Italy right now. Doesn't look unwarranted when your healthcare system is like a war zone, does it? Hey BCM, please dig a whole deep enough to reach Down under. The current climate is more friendly down there. We should all drink some coronas on the other side!
  18. The Dutch PM listens to his experts though. He doesn't fire the people with bad news and unwanted advice. There's an actual decision making process in place. But he's not perfect though. But many in Western countries aren't. Nobody is. The irony is that if governments would be considered as overreacting, they'd probably would be doing the right stuff. Remember when we had a discussion about overreacting to this virus a couple of days ago? (It started out that way before it moved to a course on being SMART) Well, given that you teach kids about data science and all that good shit, I conclude you're on the smart side of the bell curve. Which means theres more than 50% of the population to your left. My guess is that more than 50% of the population would have considered any proactive measure to contain this "flu" complete rubbish a couple days ago. And still today, I'm afraid. At this point in time it's best to follow governments advice. It's the best we have. And it's far from having a president like Trump. Not even comparable, imo. It doesn't make any sense to compare the two. Just consider the possibility there are good reasons for keeping schools open at this point in time. Just like there were good reasons for asking people with mild symptoms to preventively stay home a couple days ago.
  19. You know it's the year 2020 when you read this in an online paper and realise it's not the opinion section after ckecking 3 times to be sure... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/12/donald-trump-coronavirus-crisis
  20. If he's smart he cancels. Odds are he could pick up some cold while traveling. And in these conditions you seriously have to consider it's covid19. Given that the odds of people being tested on corona actually shrinks (!!!! Because they cant keep up with all new cases, they only test people under specific conditions. Most people with flu-type symptoms are told to go home and sit it out. Only urgent cases get attention), you prolly wont ever know whether its a cold or a corona. And given this lack of knowledge, would you do a tour anyways? This should be a rhetorical question, btw. The answer is no, because you don't want to spread it.
  21. Dont know what to say. Just can't explain how warped some minds are these days. It's just not healthy.
  22. Talking about clueless, have you actually informed yourself about what is happening outside your personal bubble? Perhaps you should compare the situation in Italian hospitals today with that a year ago. Should give you a clue about what is taking place and why this is different to just a seasonal flue. I don't blame you though. I stopped being surprised by how clueless people can be some time ago.
