  1. really interesting and true observations. What you just said sort of activated a belief in my mind that i haven't been able to express before. And it makes me wonder, of all the people through out history who had genuine 'spiritual' experiences, or religious visions. Were they actually just badly describing their trip for the same reasons you describe above? and as a by product we have watered down human filtered 'trip reports' in the form of all the world's religions and yeah Re: salvia, it is by far the most abstract experience ... ever. Getting any more descriptive than that would be doing it an injustice. It's pretty insane too how inexperienced human kind is with the fully other worldly salvia trip. I just don't think it's possible the way the natives supposedly did it (without smoking) to experience that sort of extreme loss of contact with normal reality. Salvia is definitely my favorite!
  2. this topic is possibly the most common on WATMM. My suggestion is you stop eating shitty food and, as soon as possible, put on some running shorts, some running shoes... and go for a 40 minute jog. do this every day or every other day for a week. If you're angry, listen to some good music to clear it out of you. write in a journal. the majority of people I know are depressed. I'm somewhat worse than them, but at the same time I've learned to deal with it much better. Take my word for it, the #1 cure for depression is a healthy lifestyle. Exercise being the most important part.
  3. People need to be able to detect frozen patties. Speak up against this shit.
  4. not lookin good. I can't help but notice that beef is a cooked dead cow. There are certain presentations that make it appealing, that one fails. (actually if you look at again it looks like a mcdonalds burger with semen all over it) etc http://1.bp.blogspot...wY/s400/mlr.jpg
  5. I would appreciate input. I listened to A Thirsty Fish a couple nights ago and found it to be absolute genius. It was also probably the most disturbing piece of music that I've ever heard. It sounds like what Stockhausen was meant to sound like, given a full understanding of modern technology. It really is genius, a must hear. Be careful though, it might induce schizophrenia.
  6. for me, post-bop was more or less the peak of jazz http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-bop
  7. chilling with some Kirk right now http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nBm51YOgb0
  8. this was an instant favorite for me. I add this to my list of favorites, which is now: Dolphy - out there dolphy - out to lunch (outward bound as well) cecil taylor - jazz advance miles davis - esp, miles smiles, kind of blue sun ra - future sounds pharoah sanders - karma coltrane - giant steps, love, meditation, interstellar space, (ascension, lesser so) schlippenbach - pakistani pomade that's just off the top of my head. I need to get back into jazz, and go all the way. this Jarrett album, and ECM records, has really revitalized my interest.
  9. global warming has long ago been accepted by the elite as an extremely serious problem, bases already exist on the moon for escape
  10. if Children of Men is a "tech demo" then honestly you should probably just stop watching movies. best sci fi film of the last 20 years, probably. actually that would go to 12 Monkeys or something anyway, I'm just saying, when the "pickins" are this slim, i do think it's reasonable to lower standards just a little bit.
  11. Theres a lot of subtleties on the motivation of some of the characters. I personally think its written that way on purpose. But what do I know. It is odd that you are taking a stance on this despite not having seen the film yourself. I understand Zaphod's pain. I haven't seen Avengers, I more or less assumed it was in the same ballpark of quality of Iron Man + Star Trek, which received similar hype levels also similar special effects and trailers... so I assume that it's equally as terrible. I think it's a fair assumption. This is funny: ON THE CHARACTERS: I definitely think they've been getting way too much hate. The captain was awesome, lovable. Good actor. Shaw was lovable, reedeemable, cool. I loved the ending (spoiler!!!!), as I've said before, where her and the robot fly into space. It definitely has that same "I love these characters" feeling I get watching DS9 or BSG. Heart warming. I love when the robot starts talking to her and she puts his head in the bag, that's was some clever shit. I assume haters were too caught up in their hate by that point in the film to pay attention. Charlize was cool, I definitely suspected she was a robot so that scene with her and the captain was funny and rather ambiguous. I still don't think it's too clear whether or not she was.
  12. I would kill to watch this movie right now. It's something to get lost in viscerally. You can't get lost in Avengers/IronMan viscerally, you turn your brain the fuck off and indulge in mediocrity. With this there is no mediocrity. You're on another fucking planet with the people, in the middle of space. You're flying in spaceships. There are no special effects. It's so damn imaginative. But whatever, it's nowhere near perfect as stands. What's to be gained from these arguments? There will be no consensus. I'm not going to say, "yeah, ok, my experience watching this movie wasn't as good as I'm saying." Because what's the point? I had a damn good time watching this movie. Characters are for plays, not 200 billion $ science fiction extravaganzas. Anyway the characters were fine, I liked them. They were performers mainly meant to guide us through the alien world. Most of Ridley Scotts films use the setting as the main character, think about it. The atmosphere is the main character, flying into space is the main character. The plot is legitimately secondary, unlike in a film like Avengers where the very life of the film and it's undying "hypemachineability" "conformity demanding" big money indulgment is hanging by the very thread of its ability to swindle viewers into thinking it's an enjoyable viewing experience. LOL.
  13. Definitely. I especially enjoy movies that "transport" you into a realistic setting. I mean, with all the technology we have these days, I imagine someone could make an absolutely astounding and realistic "journey into space" film... 3D, full technology usage... it could be amazing. As of right now I think this is the closest thing we have to that. Imagine the "space tunnel" scene in 2001 in 3D. Some of those graphics with the Space Jockey technology were pretty close to that. I need to see this again 3D IMAX before it leaves theaters... that's a once in a lifetime experience. Haha.
  14. pretty accurate. so far I only disagree that this is necessarily leading to a sequel it probably is, but still I think this movie can stand alone. it would have been much better and "poetic" had it ended when they flew off the planet instead of when the alien was born. unfortunately instead of leaning into the poetic inclinations of Scott, it leaned into the mass audience tendencies of the marketers the "cesarean" scene was worth the price of admission. i think that's the question, how many scenes were worth the price of admission. most of them, from a visual standpoint. by the way I thought the Shaw actress did a really great job playing the character, she almost reached Ripley levels of power at the end
  15. Honestly anyone expecting this movie to approach Bladerunner or Alien levels is probably not the sharpest tool in the shed, culturally at least.
  16. certainly one of the most immersive space films ever made, easily I felt like I was on another planet with these people. I'm still reveling in that feeling. I remember seeing Independence Day when I was a kid, and fucking loving it. Mars Attacks, Men in Black, etc. All these space movies... and just like reveling in the imagination and the atmosphere and the "buzz" or high you get when a movie has transported you into this crazy world with these characters you liked. I'm really getting that after watching this, I want to see it again right now. Movies that haven't done that for me for the past 5 years: Inception Iron Man Transformers The Dark Knight Avatar Wall-E District 9 Up There is something genuinely romantic about this film. It really does have soul, despite it's obvious flaws.
  17. I'm honestly really glad I didn't decide not to go based on the negative buzz in this thread and elsewhere on the web. I stand by my and some other posts on the last page... mostly. Might be giving the Lost writer too much shit, the twists in this film were mostly pretty interesting... apart from some embarrassing moments that I can overlook. There were too many great moment and just really futuristic images. Ridley Scott still has it. "Science fiction" in the way I like it... so yeah. I think a lot of the negative buzz is from people who expect movies to be perfectly streamlined for their enjoyment. For someone like me, I'm very much willing to overlook flaws if there is something original being presented. I thought this movie was highly original... it was a treat to see in 3D Imax, in every sense of the word "treat." I was almost in tears from the beauty of the landscapes in the beginning, and when that shadow comes over... my thoughts were just "filmmaking has come a long way since Alien." Those images were astounding. So yeah, people might laugh at some parts that didn't come off well, the plot holes are rather severe, but the originality of the images, presentation, violence, and appealing characters (to me the characters were pitch perfect... I don't agree with posts on that subject, I liked the cast and they made the people pretty fun to watch... much better than Star Trek, that's just my take though).
  18. I give this movie an 8/10. Despite all my rage I'm still just ready to say this movie was actually very good. It wasn't really dumb at all, actually some of the ideas were pretty interesting. I would go so far as to say it's one of the best science fiction movies I've ever seen. That said there were major flaws, such as "random" scenes and rather corny acting at a few parts. A few parts were pretty "cringe-worthy." It was like, a few stops short of being an honest to god masterpiece. And by a few stops I mean terrible dialogue and random scenes coming out of nowhere that induced cringes and inner facepalms. But still, considerably more spiritually interesting and relevant than Tree of Life. Best space visuals I've ever seen.
  19. while i agree with everything you're saying, there is one thing to note. they keep making this shit because you, the fanboy who gets his panties wet at every last morsel of info available before a movie even has a trailer, pays to see these films. i refuse to see prometheus after reading about it on this board and seeing the reviews. it sounds like shit. i'm not paying to watch that, and i absolutely don't want to contribute to the potential funding of any of these prequels, sequels or reboots that a creatively bankrupt industry continues to produce. i'll stay at home and watch aliens on blu ray, or read a book, or go out and interact with people whose lives don't revolve around consuming every last piece of product put in front of them that they can forget about as soon as next thing is released. the data gathering culture that seems to have sprung up in the last decade is mind boggling in its basic drive to consume everything in its path without a fucking clue as to how to be satisfied by any of it. maybe that's what happens when the nerds win and start running things. you get people like lindelof and jj abrams who are masters at self promotion and marketing, the tease of a childhood memory that can be exploited, but lack the artistic integrity and breadth of experience to pull it together into a coherent statement about anything that matters. or maybe it really is about a bottom line. fuck the critics. seriously. look at this shit: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/prometheus_2012/ no accountability or integrity
  20. total recall movie looks sleazy, stupid, hollywood bullshit, cgi, action bullshit, asshole bullshit how is it possible that film has gone this far down the shitter. i think its time we truly start asking this question
