Well, I think there is a good chance Biden will end up playing in favor for the GOP come 2022/2024. If Biden turns out to be a 'meh' president, which he probably will, Trump could run again in 2024 and win.

Biden is a boring centrist politician who harps on meaningless platitudes and avoids talking about policy substance as much as possible. Trump got elected because of his right wing populism in 2016. He lied about everything populist he said, but his supporters lapped it up anyway. Come 2024, people who are on the fence may have kinda forgotten how bad Trump was, especially if he uses that populist rhetoric he used in 2016 - leading to his re-election.

This will probably happen as long as the Senate is red no matter who is President. But Biden has a shot at winning the election and possibly a shot at at least restoring some democratic (small d) norms to the country, and keeping the GOP from chipping away further at the judiciary, etc. And if he can control the pandemic better than Trump it’s a step towards having a functional society.  Bernie had no chance of getting that far.

For the record, I think Bernie is 100 percent not the person who should be the standard bearer for the future of progressive politics given his actual political career, etc, but it’s a moot point.

This is what I have been thinking the past few years. Bernie's ideas will EVENTUALLY win over, but won't be viable till... I dunno... 2040ish.

Yep. Even if Bernie could have been elected in 2020 he would be functionally powerless as President, which would only end up playing in favor of the GOP four years later.

well, black people in the south supported biden heavily over sanders and other candidates in the primary and that kind of sealed the deal. also, young people didn't come out to vote for sanders. he got more votes of young people but biden got some and most people over 40 voted for biden in the primaries. so, ratfuckery aside, biden got more votes by far. i'd have loved a bernie candidacy but it'd be tough slog against trump. bernie would have to sell his message harder than anyone and it would've been tough during covid. a lot of boomers don't like bernie and there is such rapid paralyzing fear of bernie amongst right leaning voters and GOP voters. the "he's  socialist" thing stuck really hard.

The “socialist” angle absolutely would have prevented Bernie from winning the upper Midwest, which is absolutely going to decide this election.  Again.

The whole strategy of running with Biden was to grab back that blue wall, which was clearly terrified of a Clinton presidency.

The Berners coming out in force in Austin, TX were never going to be able make up the gap of losing that blue wall.

Unfortunately, until there is a significant demographic shift away from Boomer Voting Power, the Democrats will always need to be broadly center-left.

My great hope for the country is that boomers aging out of, uh life I guess, will open up an opportunity for a politically valid progressive third party, with the Democrats taking the traditional centrist position and the GOP being greatly diminished and recognized as the far-right nuthouse it actually is.  Even that shift would have an uphill battle for a generation or two given structural impediments.  But failing that, we could realistically see Democrats pivoting left, slowly, slowly.

This moment is about setting the groundwork for that path, and there is reason to be cautiously optimistic (if Biden can hang on and win it).

  4. I couldn’t give this a close listen, but the ending of TM1 sounded like the hoary ghost of Viral Rival falling off the side of a precipitous mountain after a rare moment of negligence by RoboCop, only different.

    edit: in a good way

  5. If there’s an Autechre album that wears its Coil influence on its sleeves, surely it’s got to be Oversteps and not SIGN.

tbh I kind of wish there was more follow-through with the Oversteps compositional/melodic method, as much as I love everything that’s come since.

Hey all, what level of damage would you guys consider uhm... petty? Considering these vinyl aren’t typically repressed etc.... the top of my sleeve is damaged/split all across the top, other sides are fine. Should I be requesting a new sleeve?

You are referring to the (mostly) blank orange paper sleeves, right?

As long as the vinyl itself is fine I would just put the record in a better quality inner sleeve and keep the originals for A E S T H E T I C.

Which is what I'm doing right now because I'm finally giving the analog vinyls a first spin.

    Edit: M4 Lema is perfect.

  7. Who cares how the guitar solo in Californication sounds when it’s sitting in one of the worst sounding productions in history, don’t even get me started on that hack Rubin because everything he’s been involved with for 25 years has been absolute shit and thanks for the tinnitus from having to listen to all of your loudness war casualty crap on every radio station on earth circa 2000 you shit I had to break up with Nancy because she wouldn’t stop playing Scar Tissue and I still miss you Nancy I’m so sorry it wasn’t me it was the dynamic range and also when Reggie slipped me that bowl with the opium residue I had no idea what I was saying I miss you baby my life has really turned around since then I swear and I don’t even cum in that sock anymore and no I don’t only talk about how you should really watch Firefly unless it’s

  8. Ironically enough my vinyl copy of Tri Rep is probably the cleanest sounding LP I own.

I got a dispatch notice on SIGN a couple days back but it’s still showing as “preshipment” on the tracking info, which puts it on the other side of the North American continent.  Bleep/Warp are always shit at logistics.

Revisiting NTS (especially Gonk Steady One) after Warp Tapes I almost wonder, how much of the old electro-DNA is still recognizably present...

sorry for the necro quote, but t1a1 @ about 2:55 sounds more than a bit like that old sample chestnut (compare Accelera @ 45s).  Makes me lol everytime.

  10. Has anyone used Renoise Redux at all?

I like the idea of using a tracker plugin inside of Reaper (rather than fucking with ReWire etc), but I don't see a ton of discussion about Redux one way or another, even on the Renoise forum or its own support documentation.

For the record, I don't really have much experience with Renoise itself, just downloaded a trial version years ago.  Kind of liked it but I had my hands full figuring Reaper out at the time.

  11. I'm still waiting on the LP to come in so I can give this a second listen.  For some idiotic reason or another.

But I'm going back to the elseqs in the meantime, because NTS and the more recent live sets kind of sucked all of the air out of that space for me.  So much good shit, and I still feel like I haven't fully learned to live in it all even though it's mostly all well worth living in  (NTS has a few spotty bits for me, although far fewer than something that massive should be expected to have).

I guess that's all just to say I'd be ok if SIGN's companion takes a little while to arrive, but I have a feeling it'll be here soon.

IIRC, the Bros. 'Chre were a little worried about how Oversteps would be received, and maybe that's why MoT hurried along after it.  Seems like Sean feeling a bit similarly re: SIGN in that NYT interview, with it being too on the nose or whatever.

Edit: either way, they've been in Jewish mom mode since Quaristice: eat, eat, you're skin and bones, have some Versions with that?  And that generosity is so rare and welcome, so who am I to say I'm a bit full at the moment MOM
