In 1996 Gerhard Behles and I attended the International Computer Music Conference in Hong Kong. I took the chance to capture field recordings in and around Hong Kong and Guangzhou. The trip was very inspiring, and we believe that the music we created afterwards reflects the atmosphere and mood of this experience. For the compilation of our first vinyl releases to a CD album in 1997, we not only chose the title Hongkong, but also refined the original songs with material derived from the field recordings I made. We also added a previously unreleased closing title that is based on a recording captured in a subway train of Hong Kong's public transport.

For the re-release we decided to go for a new mastering, since the experience with the Interstate album was so great. The mastering of this album went equally well and adds a lot to the original recordings. We also decided to remove the track Index I from the remastered version. It simply doesn't fit in, and we already had discussions about it in 1997. Now it's gone and it will find a new home online later and on vinyl.

Produced by Gerhard Behles and Robert Henke 1995-1997. Ambient recordings captured in Hong Kong & Guangzhou 1996. Synthesizer solo on Mass Transit Railway by Wieland Samolak.

Mastering of the second edition by Rashad Becker, edits by Robert Henke. Total running time 59:30

I'm slightly disappointed that they removed Index from this reissue, it was my favourite track. Hopefully it will be released as a lossless file. Despite this, i'm sure this will be a great remaster, like the earlier interstate reissue.

Wonder when this is actually out? I saw mention of it a while back on the Monolake site but can't find any actual release date. Can't wait for this but pity it's not complete.

from monolake.de

Hongkong, the first Monolake album from 1997, remastered 2008. Available in June as a nicely packaged CD and online via iTunes, Beatport...

noticed that index was as a free track, but only as 160kbps.wtf.

Cool, cheers.

I'd reckon it is my favourite album but Amazon on Interstate is definitely one of my very best tracks from Monolake, can't stop listening to it lately.

i hear you. the whole remaster is lush as hell, but amazon takes the caek, especially when the beat kicks in after the looong intro.

Yeah it's unreal, love the long intro. I have actually stuck that track back on again after it ends, not many I do that with. Wonder is it on any 12" actually? Must have a look around discogs to check.

Yeah picked this up too a couple of weeks ago now, brilliant album, thrilled to have a copy now, even if it is missing a track. This has got several plays, ahead of some other CD's that have not yet had a single play!

i just got the 12" with the index tracks, it was reissued (remastered) along with this one (under helical scan, as with the previous version on the chain reaction label). this track was my favourite when i first heard the old album. so good! the second track is super also, maybe even better.
