If they started talking about Satan in Finnish and recorded the sound of someone vomiting pitched down by 50% and sampled the squeal of a slaughtered lamb to play melodies on a sampler, then I guess that's what it would take for you, huh.

d00d i think you just summed up my metal project.

Get that shit committed to disc or mp3, I gotta hear it. I was trying dig into Essines but on further review, I actually like the sound of what I came up with--thereby, agreeing with Essines and thus fucking me yet again in Uroboros fashion.

i haven't finished it yet, i'm releasing an album at the end of the month:

<img src="http://rooftopaccess.net/audio/archie%20martin%20vox%20-%2028/amv28.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

it will contain plenty of "that kind of thing".

god i love drumming. i quit my teacher after a few months. got my kit and i practice at least a half hour a day. sometimes i'll just put the ipod on shuffle and drum along to whatever comes up. that was good advice, thanks. my favorite stuff to drum to is slow swingy shit like portishead and you can do cool swingy fills and plus it's slow enough to where i dont get too awful tripped up. there are so many tiny but noticeable breakthroughs that it keeps me coming back. this was the instrument i should have had from day one instead of the guitar. any other advice? i got a little korg metronome and it blows my mind how difficult it is to stay on time, when you think you have a simple loop mastered and then try to play it repeatedly with the metronome.

Is there anything easy I can do to make it a bit quieter so its easier to mess around with? I'm not reall worried about losing sound quality at this stage

I used to put really thin tea towels over them. Experiment with different thicknesses.

its funny because i think the main thing about practising with a metronome is having it really fucking loud, at least as loud as your drums. Depends what kind of metronome you have.

i have the metronome going on my headphones, it seems pretty balanced with my drums, but maybe i need to turn it up a little

Does it have a little blinking light on it? Sometimes it can help to watch that off and on while playing as well just to stay on track. I usually had to turn mine way up too though.

Your internal metronome will get better and better with time and practice, and there is really no substitute for that.

As for advice, I'm not sure of your skill level so I don't want to offend. But one ProTip™ I got back when I was just starting was to experiment with dynamics. i.e. Don't hit everything with the same velocity all the time, that is the biggest dead giveaway of a beginner. Especially when playing jazzy / bluesy stuff. Also, use your wrists, not your arms.

I'm better at drums than any other instrument. I've been playing for... over 20 years now... Christ! People are right on when they talk about playing with a metronome. It's best to start simple and get good at simple before you try to tackle harder shit.

My style is a bit loose

and weird, but I can keep really good time.

... that is because I never had formal trap kit training but I can keep really good time. I also play really hard.

Practice by yourself helps, but I say start a band and get playing with some other people. Even if you suck at first, you will find yourself developing around the other musicians.

I am also proficient at double-bass, btw. I've played in lots of metal bands in the past. I have a lower end Pearl pedal ( I think it's the P902). I have had many kinds of double bass pedals and can safely advise not to get the cheapest one in the store. I paid around 200 bucks for my current pedal but wish I spent more and got a slightly better one. I can say that It is good to learn on something that isn't top notch, however. That way, when you move up to better gear, you can feel the difference more. You just don't want to start out with total shit because it WILL break and you'll find yourself spending a total on 2 pedals what you would have spent for 1 decent pedal. Definitely don't buy something that isn't a name brand.

btw, I played on one of these in the store the other day...

... It made me feel like motherfucking Vinnie Paul. The shit felt so easy and smooth... like butter.

yo guys. i've come across a lot of instruction advising that i "count out loud" but i dont like to. is it possible to progress without fucking counting shit. what if you just innately feel the rhythm instead of count it?

i'm going to be picking up an electronic kit so i can resume playing in my apartment and hopefully start up a project with my good friend. i have a kit but how the fuck do you play acoustic drums in an apartment building?

I have the same problem. There is a basement in my building that I tried playing in. It smells like dead rats, asbestos, crude oil and sewage down there. My building is small and when I practice, you can hear that shit everywhere. Not good. Maybe v-drums is the only answer besides renting a practice space. Ffffuuuu.

silencing pads are ok but you can't use them all the time. I need to hear my drums. eventually i'll get the best kit on the planet and move into a house but for now electronic drums are my answer. plus they are cool as shit!

gotta feel it whatever you're doing. try keeping time by bobbing your head, then you don't get locked into a rhythm with any of your other limbs. when i was starting drumming, i knew the right hand usually played straight quarters or eighths, so i got into a nasty habit of always having my right hand play straight eights or quarters. not good. your metronome (if you aren't playing with one) should be your head or body, dancing or even just twitching to the beat.

drums are probably the reason i'm into idm. percussion in other music is just too... predictable? lackluster? typical? i love what ae do with percussion because many of their patterns would be so confusing to play correctly, so you never hear any rhythm like that with a rock band. but they also know how to work the groove thang, even if it becomes hopelessly complicated when the part is transcribed.

edit - how much are cheap electronic sets these days?

i was looking around and you can get yamaha kits for 6-700 bucks. I'm looking more at the $1500 price range. Top of the line can run you higher than 5 grand but i don't have that. 1500 will get you two cymbal pads, two mounted toms, a floor tom and a snare, as well as a high hat. the processor which comes with it ain't bad, wide array of voices. I'd love to spend 5 grand but this is kind of an interim thing, plus i don't have that kind of money.

plus electronic kits are the perfect mix of idm and black metal.

My neighbor upstairs plays the drums lol. But I produce loud sounds down here, so I just consider it even

are you able to load your own samples/edit the effects on each part at the $1500 price range?

I'm in the same boat. Played guitar then bass my whole life, but always wanted to be a drummer. now i have a kit and play all the time, only for fun.

i try to put a bunch of good drumming music in a playlist and shuffle it up, but i'm getting tired of the tracks in there and need some new stuff to drum to. Suggestions?

Here's the kind of stuff I play to now:

  • stevie wonder
  • radiohead
  • pixies
  • jackson 5
  • prince
  • 5ive style
  • portishead
  • the roots
  • tribe called quest
  • interpol
  • weezer
  • sloan
  • elliot smith
  • heliocentrics
  • and i struggle until i ROFL off of my throne trying to play: tool and tortoise

NO Rush please – nothing against Rush, i just don't want to play that style.
