If you don't appreciate (and love) Motown music then I don't want to know you.

Here's one of my favourites:

For great polished pop music you listened to Motown but if you really wanted something funky you went to Stax. Berry Gordy made it known he was going after the crossover (white) audience because of this a lot of Motown stuff didn't really have a social consciousness to it (Marvin Gaye had to fight Gordy just to get 'What's Going On?' released). I think the people at Stax knew they couldn't be Motown and because of this probably followed their artistic whims more often, which made the music funkier.

I know, et al. It was accidental, and I don't know how to edit thread titles.

But anyway, I'm almost certain that I was made to listen to Motown in the womb, and it's definitely the first music I remember really enjoying. Well, it's the only stuff from my parents collection that I can enjoy at any time, aside from the Beatles and Bowie.

I love motown but it has a bad influence on me.

Makes me want to get all coked up and drive around sipping a cocktail and make that pistol gesture at people I know.

Never knew about this. It's not strictly Motown, but interesting, and has a lot in common with Kelly's 'In the Closet'.

If you like Motown you should see this...great documentary about the session musicians that made most of the label's hits.

I'll second this- if you're not interested in Motown, you will be after watching this! I recently went to the Motown museum here in Detroit for the second time- such a cool vibe to stand in the studio where all of those songs were recorded.
