Question for people who drive cars

Hi

 

I have a question....

 

recently it's come to my attention that when you're coming up to a junction on the road and there's a few cars ahead of you - "you should" go from 3rd, into 2nd and then 1st, and finally neutral.

 

I find this counter productive and much prefer taking it out of gear from 3rd and using my brake to slow down or complete stop.

 

How do you come up to junctions if you have to stop and you're in 3rd (going roughly 30mph)?

I just go into neutral and coast up, but in a test you'ld get a mark for this as your not fully in control of a car as engine breaking doesnt work in neutral. Peado

I only downshift when I'm going down a hill and want to stay in a lower gear. If Im coming to a stop I throw it in neutral and break. Then if I accelerate again before fully stopping it's usually in 2nd from there.

Yeah, no need to shift into 1st, thats silly. Only over long distances where you know you are slowing down gradually like on an exit ramp or something should would you really want to downshift like that. NOT when the light turns yellow. Or, another good time to downshift is when you are coming up to a turn, say you are in 4th and then you just pop it into 3rd or 2nd, brake with the clutch disengaged, and then when coming out of the turn engage the clutch again in the lower gear and accelerate out of the turn. Thats just how I do it though, and I pretty much learned on my own, so I might be missing out on some "best practices" for driving standard. Unfortunately I don't have a car right now either.

Btw I dont believe in the practice of downshifting each gear. if Im in 4th and slowing down Ill move into 2nd, no problem. No worries

The reason I ask is because I'm doing pass plus right now and when I'm driving about usually, I'll come up to a junction, take it out of gear, brake and then if I see the queue ahead moving, i may then move into 2nd or first depending how fast I'm moving.

 

Needless to say, the instructor didn't like this and strongly urged I go into 2nd, then 1st. To me it feels really bizarre and awkward because the cars engine is extremely quiet and by using the gearing to slow down to an absolute stop (as in, he will moan if I even coast a tiny bit at the end ~ which I did in order to avoid stooling the car since if the cars in 1st and slowing to a complete stop ~ the rev's will go down until a stop and thus making the engine run so slow till its lower than the average revs at neutral ~ stooling).

 

Basically, it's really annoying because you can't hear the engine (it is that quiet) so I'm having to guess what the gear ratio is like and at the mean time - battling with the car so that when it's almost stopped take it out of gear but only until the last second where it's about to stool. Fucking piss take.
