That they have vending machines where you can buy used girls knickers? I refuse to google this as I'm scared of the truth.

It's not like they were all over the place. THey had like a couple in the seedier areas of Roppongi, and shinjuku, probably some of the other smaller wards as well.

The beer vending machines are a godsend.

But surely kids can just walk up to these machines and grab a beer right?

I bought from one when I was 19.

I also bought a bottle of whiskey for the trip home. This brand, actually:

Yeah of course it's entirely possible but it mostly just doesn't happen. It's the same in Korea, kids walk in all the time to convenience stores and buy beer or smokes for their parents, but they don't abuse the system.

Mostly because the respect for societal order is ingrained in these cultures . Of course there are always the bad applese, but they mostly either straigten their shit out, or they join the gangs (and these aren't street gangs, they're well-disciplined organizations).

But the thing about Japanese vending machine culture is basically, if you don't want to talk to another human, you could easily do so for weeks in Japan.

Yeah, I was really surprised by how well behaved people are over there. Tokyo is the largest city in the world and has extremely low crime.

I was in Sapporo (5th largest city) this summer, and walking through the center of the city. I walked for 40 minutes. In that time I heard a car honk its horn ONCE.

true story.
