Apparently its a lot more common than you'd think in cardiac,trauma,or emergency C-section surgeries because it can be dangerous for the patient/baby to have the deepest level of anesthesia.I was reading that patients who do wake up during surgery may suffer from post traumatic stress disorder for years afterwards.However as one is always monitored throughout surgery by not only the anesthetist but also others on the surgery team any awareness would be dealt with as swiftly as possible. The general concensus seems to be that awareness during surgery is distressing but usually not painful as the area where the incision is made would be likely to still be numbed even if the patient does start to 'wake up'. Guest hahathhat Posted February 1, 2010 Share Posted February 1, 2010 this thread reminds me of the time the orthadontist decided i needed to have a couple teeth yanked. they stuck needles into the roof of my mouth, and from then on things were kind of weird. it was basically some lady yanking at my teeth with a pair of pliers until they came out. tug, tug, this lady is tugging hard. quite surreal but it failed to scar me for life. they let me keep the teeth but i forgot them on the receptionist's counter because i was still kinda whacked out. Guest theSun Posted February 1, 2010 Share Posted February 1, 2010 when they put me "out" to take out my wisdom teeth (omgsodumb) i wasn't really unconscious but the whole thing seems very surreal and i think i can remember all of it but notsomuch. that part was the really the best part about getting the wisdom teeth removed, the next 2 weeks sucked something fierce. Guest hahathhat Posted February 1, 2010 Share Posted February 1, 2010 when i got my wisdom teeth pulled, they hooked me up to an IV. i asked the lady what it was, and she replied that it was fentanyl (opiate) and valium (benzo). it felt quite good. then i went under. when i woke up, i stumbled to reception and made a follow-up appointment i forgot about, then had my percocet perscription filled. the next 2 weeks were not bad at all -- ice cream and percocet.
