can someone explain something to me?

i have some mp3s in my share that i know are 256kbps, but slsk reports them as 160kbps with excessive track lengths corresponding... how does this happen?

Soulseek doesn't always quantize the bitrate accurately, that's not really your fault. If it's about downloading from other users, what you can do is compare the track's duration (according to discogs.com for example) to the file's size, so you can judge if the audio quality is good enough for you.

 

Edit: Chassis is wrong, it occurs with both CBR and VBR formats.

maybe soulseek gets track times by dividing the file size by the bit rate, and it's getting incorrect bitrates for some reason.

How do you know theyre 256kbps?

 

they're from livephish.com and every mp3 i've ever gotten from there has been 256kbps, also when i play them in foobar2000 it says they're 256kbps

I have downloaded stuff there (no I haven't) that was supposedly a certain bitrate and then after downloading and importing them into my player they show as 160kbps. Anger happened!
