VHS Head's Sample Spotting

Guest sirch

Recommended Posts

Thought it'd be a slightly good idea to make a seperate topic for VHS Head 'samplespotting'.

yes, yes. not Trainspotting, but Sample spotting, you see. (inventive, eh)

so if you've spotted something and would like to say "hey!" and point it out to others, then why not post it in here.

also, if you've already posted something in the Trademark Ribbons of Gold release thread then bung it on over here too.. if you want.

'cos that topic's gotten mega long now.. and i spose it'd be 'neater' to have it all in the one place. ya get me. :)

so, i pointed out probably the most obvious and easy one the other week, in 'Heartbeat in the Brain'. which has a bit from the film 'Teenwolf' in it (i reckon). it was showing on the Syfy channel again only last week... i managed to flick over and it was right at the bit where Scott is changing into a Werewolf for the first time, in the bathroom, lol, and that music is playing. "dang-dang-derr-derr-dang-dang-dang". y'know.

anymore for any more?

please continue........

i'd be keen to see if anyone can spot the films that have been skewed and effected in the cd sleeve, guessing they'd be the same that are sampled in the tracks

yeah, there's a funk bassline at the end of some track that made me think frankie as well.

and i think that there's a sample from either killer instinct or one of the mortal kombats in a track. can't place it again, grrr, a low pitched 'OUTSTANDING' or similar...

i actually reckon that the reason that gianasi kinda sounds like the field's over the ice (based on a kate bush sample from a track mostly done on a fairlight) is not because they use the same sample, but because the vhs head track samples some more obscure thing... that uses the same fucking fairlight preset. it's wonderfully trainspotterish music, the most so since geogaddi maybe...

still waiting for my copy to arrive to compare it in detail, but one of the tracks is "guinea pig film", which i guess means music / sound sampled from the famous series of films

another track is "twitch of the nerve" which looks like it's something to do with "twitch of the death nerve"

This is in the title track.

even though the Jackson link is completely redundant, I found something a little bit... puzzling.

in the track DPP39 has these light, eerie chords in in the background. They come in about 40secs in.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf2M__3-0VY

well, I could swear they are the same chords from this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgKqR4we3WY

which was a one off side project Jackson did before Smash. I don't know if its a sample of Panash, and if it is I don't know whether it was intentionally aimed to those who thought it was Jackson. Or maybe I'm seeing similarities that don't exist, but I think its pretty intriguing.

you reckon its just randon imagery rather than the films he's sampled? can't see why that'd be something on his album sleeve

the vertical strip that runs down the left side of the left panel for example, looks like film imagery to me

also appears to be a train or plane running through the upper part of the left panel ...

I forgot about this poster on his myspace. The movie is on MST3K. Maybe there's shit in there.

FFFUUUUU FFFFFFUUUUUUUU I think I recognize that voice sample in Franco Zoom to Nowhere starting at ~2:53 but can't put my finger on it. I'm pretty sure it was one of those psycho killer flicks in the vein of Maniac/Don't Go in the House/Nightmare etc and it's this sort of "inner voice" the protagonist hears inside his head.

FFFUUUUUUUUU halp :cerious:

From 2:13 to end of "The Violent Breed", he samples an interesting conversation.

e.g. at 3:20 - "The new criminals have been so brutalised throughout upbringing that they seem incapable of viewing their victims as fellow human beings.."

Great track as well -- anyone identify this lengthy sample? Sounds like it could be from a sci-fi film of some sort perhaps

To me it sounds like a sample from a documentary about serial killers.
