i think somebody needs to do something about ranking systems in games like Modern Warfare and Battlefield.

Ranking should be related to performance, not overall score measures. Why are we so fucking egalitarian in video games?

in the battlefield series specifically you could bring back the commander function which could only be occupied by very high-ranking (highly performing players). Lots of other cool things you could do with this kind of thing.

anyways, I know this is a lame topic but lately I am lame.

I race on iracing, it's not really a game more of a simulation, but anyway the whole ranking system is not like BF3 and those things, it's more based on a chess-type system (ELO system ranking). Every game should be using that, it's amazing.

Btw it's John Henry himself, owner of the Red Sox/ManU (and that I know of personally!) that created this for iRacing, using this and his own personnal sabermetric baseball-system.

Yeah basically every race has 1000 points, and however you win or lose points depends on if you finish higher or lower than people with higher rating than yours. It's the same as a ELO rating system.

So you could gain 200 points out of the total 1000 awarded to all drivers if you finish 10th out of 15 if those 4 drivers behind you had a high rating, but the opposite would also be true. To be quick : don't get beat by drivers with low ratings.

Then that overall rating gives you the ability to race in higher series (that, coupled with *another* rating that takes in consideration a corner versus incident ratio).

It's really complicated, but sabermetrics gave John Henry a World Championship!!

The point of ranking systems in (most) FPS games is to keep people playing, though, not to actually rank people on performance. In competitive games like Starcraft and LoL rank actually matters. I'm not sure if any shooters have similar competitive ranking systems (maybe Quake Live?), but I guess as a whole big mainstream FPS games aren't aimed at the sort of player who wants to practice and improve their skills to make it up the ladder.
