Guest KY Posted November 2, 2012 Share Posted November 2, 2012 I saw the trailer first and got intrigued by the film, then found out about the book and decided to read it after a number of people on Reddit raved about how good a read it was. That reminded me never to turn to Reddit for reading recommendations. There was definitely potential somewhere in the story, but the book played out like a 300-page long wet fart joke. The way in which it was written made me think the author is his own biggest fan—weak and dim-witted sarcastic humor, obnoxious anti-intellectualism worn as a badge of honor. It read like a shitty John Carpenter fan-fiction by a "I already know I'm funny" circlejerking blogger. I started reading The Gone-Away World, which approaches a similarly apocalyptic set-up in an aire of dark humor, but by contrast, does so in an incredibly thoughtful and legitimately hilarious manner, without all the nerd-bro attempts at humor.
