  1. On a more serious note I think that's quite a dealbreaker - if I get fancy monitors with a paired amp, and then it's barely a year or two if something breaks and there are no spares - what?!?!

Because it was just barely 1,5 years ago when I was looking at those exact monitors thinking yeah I might get them.

  2. On a more serious note, I guess this kind of shows that it's not really possible to push the boundaries as a small company. If the financial realities were that they needed external investment, then looks like time has come for that external investment to extract their promised returns.

Probably a larger company could pull off this R&D and manufacturing in a way to keep the devices themselves affordable, but larger companies don't really want to experiment like this if you can have small passionate groups doing that stuff anyway and buy them up later.

Thanks for all your advice, really appreciate it.

I'm now thinking that maybe the best idea is to clean out the Mac I have and get a new computer for work instead. I only plan to make music with it and maybe some streaming but nothing crazy. I'll have a think on it.

If it still has a HDD with spinning drive you may want to upgrade to an SSD, this will definitely speed it up a lot.

  4. Also worth considering what is the thing you want to do with it: do you want a portable workstation to take out to gigs and also use it to produce music at home? Or is it more likely that you have one static workspace where you would connect an external screen anyway and you are not going to move the "music computer"?

If it's the latter, you might want to go for something like Mac Mini or Intel NUC - a small form factor desktop that you hook up your gear to and kick ass.

Building a full desktop PC might be insane as it's true that GPU prices are now at the same level as individual fully built computers because of the crypto mining craze.

    Thanks for the advice.

I'm used to Mac's now but will likely look at a normal laptop as think the price point might be cheaper for a less 'cool' product?

Looking at some of the Dell, 16gm ram. Maybe one like this > https://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/laptops/new-inspiron-15/spd/inspiron-15-5515-laptop/cn51206 or https://www.johnlewis.com/dell-inspiron-14-5406-convertible-laptop-intel-core-i7-processor-16gb-ram-512gb-ssd-14-inch-full-hd-titan-grey/p5265848

My opinion - as a personal and professional Mac user for some years - is that the initial price of purchase may be higher but it will last for a longer time (even the resale value is quite good for well kept macs). Some people also say that Macs are essentially business class laptops (especially Macbook Pro), so you should not compare the price between a Mac and the cheapest Dell/Lenovo you can get with the same specs.

I have heard people mention the Dell XPS series as the go to laptop for when you want known quality: https://www.dell.com/en-uk/work/shop/laptop-computers-for-businesses/xps-13/spd/xps-13-7390-laptop/bnx73917

Oh and looking at that Dell you linked I see it has a numpad.. which reminds me: if you have the opportunity, go and check the machines out in a shop in person to see how the keyboard and touchpad feels to use. There can be a mountain of difference between different keyboard types in terms of responsiveness (and I guess also the screen, overall user experience etc.).

As for the 2nd, please for the love of god do not get a convertible tablet laptop. This is the rule of thumb: the more trades a jack has, the worse it is in every specific trade. The hinges will probably break earlier too.

  6. I would wait a couple of months for the next generation Apple M1 Macbook Pro and get one of those. Of course I am already invested in the Apple world so this colors my opinion.

As an alternative I think maybe a business class Lenovo or Dell laptop that has plenty of RAM (32GB) and a decent processor. This should be good for years - I would go business class for laptops just to have the physical shape of the computer hold up over the years. Cheaper laptops feel they are made of flimsy plastic and will break and make you sad.

The thing is, while my main laptop was in repairs this January,  I could run Ableton Live Suite 10 and do a livestream recording 6 stereo tracks using my old Macbook Pro from 2009 (8GB, with SSD), and I only had to bump the buffer size to 128 samples, so it's really not so necessary to get a beast of a computer.

That said, I don't use a lot of synth VSTs, I mostly use computer processing for things like EQ and cabinet simulators and delays and reverbs.

  7. I think you can achieve the thing you are describing by creating new tracks that have monitoring on and a delay set, but not outputting to master buss - only to the reverb sends. This sounds like an interesting experiment to try, I hope I get around to doing that.

Do you ever think of scoring the sex that your neighbors are having ?

Bet they would enjoy some steamy jazz chord with their hot butt sex.

I think if you want to score some sex, you got to leave the keyboard and find a date.

  9. So this is what came out of OrilRiver this week. There's probably too much reverb but I like how it turned out.

For some reason I thought Valhalla was a non free plugin and hopefully I will have time to try these other things out soon.

  10. This is considerably more professional than mine. I need to unscrew everything to add more cables that need to pass through underneath the Studiolive. All because the Korg MS2000R has the I/O section on top of the thing and I don't have L shaped TS and MIDI cables.

  11. What sort of styles-genres are you expecting to put out? Maybe it's just me but I generally think labels are sort of supposed to gather together a bunch of artists that have a similar vibe or style in a general sense.

I mean I would really like to put some of my material out on vinyl but a lot of it isn't even IDM and yeah it would probably be a waste of time for both of us.

Also I got to say it's a bit shady if you just have one post on here and no links or references to the old label you had. ?

This is still one of the best sounding free reverbs:

Whatever reverb you use, remember that if it includes EQ/tone controls they're usually post reverb, but one of the most important things you can do with reverb is to put an EQ on the dry signal before it hits the reverb. If nothing else, highpassing somewhere around 200-600 Hz and lowpassing in the 10k to 15k range pre-reverb almost always makes it sound much better in the mix. Lows in particular almost never need to be there, unless you have some kind of big, Vengelis-y synth solo going on and even they you probably don't need much below 100Hz.

That plugin is pretty neat. I played around with it today, probably way too much.

  13. MOTU Track 16 https://rvrb.io/2010s-track-16-lcfu09 €150 plus shipping (Firewire-USB hybrid)

    M-Audio Profire 2626 https://rvrb.io/2010s-profire-2626-zfo0m5 €150 plus shipping (Firewire)

Selling these two audio interfaces because I upgraded to a Presonus Studiolive 24R. I was using them chained over optical link and at least on my macbook this did not work 100% perfectly, so I decided to replace them with one interface that does all I need.

Edit: actually I shipped the Profire today and decided to keep using the MOTU as a cheapo alternative for a HiFi receiver because the used prices for that are not super inspiring.

I can’t hype the strymon big sky enough. If you haven’t listened to one in person, do it before you buy another reverb of any sort. I almost bought strymon’s output module (forget what it’s called) just because their stuff sounds so good. It’s the only pedal I don’t want to be true bypass, because the buffered quality is so good. I saw that Steve roach recommended it along with the eventide space factor as the best 2 reverbs, but I have a pitch factor, so I went with a brand I didn’t already have.

I have never heard Big Sky in person but an old bandmate of mine had another Strymon reverb and he had insanely good sound altogether. Before I get anything hardware, I want to try out some plug-in alternatives though. I just need to remember to do it sometime.

  15. Finally ended up getting two major quality of life improvements - a proper audio interface (notice how it says 'professional' on it - yeah it's one of those where you can walk around in cargo pants pawing an ipad "setting the levels"), and a rack case with wheels so I can go play out in live events sit on it and wheel myself around the room.

nah, couldn't bear to part with that tumble dryer, it's just so versatile - use it on almost every track i make.

also that's an analogue solutions megacity.

Duh. Just shows what I know about good gear.
