  1. Ah I see - I always thought it was a more professional type place. I have a friend on facebook who does professional photography (well a couple), and they don't share much, but what they do share is always amazing. I remember some of your photos from the photography thread as being pretty damn incredible as well.
  2. It's probably true that places are opening too fast after vaccines. The social psychology of it is understandable, but the risk is ridiculous. For me I'm getting my first shot on the 17th (either Moderna or Pfizer) so that will be somewhat of a relief. Hopefully as Canada increases its supply of vaccines the wait for the second shot will decrease.
  3. I still have a few of your mixes kicking around. I was also on Mu, think i used FlyboT there. I used to have one of the Planet Mu baseball caps, but wore it wayyyyy too much.
  4. Is flickr not useful for that?
  5. @cyanobacteriaHow is pointing out that Navalny is in prison for exposing Putin's corruption and graft "shilling" for him? I'm not saying Navlny is a great guy, it's simply an easy example of Putin's corrupt state. Sergei Magnitsky, Khodorkovsky, Ilya Yashin, Boris Nemtsov...all have one thing in common with Navalny, and it's not Russian nationalism. You bringing up Russia as an example of where capitalism has failed when I'm talking about well regulated market economies is peak trolling though.
  6. Ah yes, Russia, the paragon of well-regulated capitalism, with no corruption at all. Speaking of nonsense...
  7. With friends from all over the world, it’s convenient for me. I think I post something once every couple of months. None of my friends are the “show off the excellence in my life” kind of people so it’s really just about keeping up with how they’re doing and what’s going on in their lives. Like you’d do with friends in your hometown. But because my hometown is not fixed, this is a proxy. Don’t have insta, do follow a few things on Twitter for professional reasons and Reddit for a couple of things but never post much there either. WATMM is probably the biggest social media timesink for me lol
  8. You have some weird understanding of capitalism. Just like communism, it is an economic system. Maybe you hate the American implementation of it? And no, the American implementation of it is not the only one, nor is it the apex of capitalism. All of those things have been tried. You cannot simply give things to others and expect poverty to end. We both want the same thing, but we differ in approach. I disagree that Marxist economics solves the problems of distribution efficiently (and this is largely borne out by economic models), while unregulated capitalism also leads to inefficiencies and inequality. Nowhere in the OECD does homelessness reach even 1% of the population, although there are issues around definitions. At least these countries provide statistics on homelessness, which is more than can be said for China. China's experiences provide some interesting insight into state-led efforts to provide housing for all instead of focusing on the most needy. Access to safe drinking water, "capitalist" countries clearly doing well. Free speech, we've already gone over, workers rights, China suppresses union activity more than America. I will grant you that American healthcare is all kinds of messed up, but that's the exception to most countries in the OECD.
  9. I understand marxism just fine and don't have an intense hatred for capitalism. I do have an intense hatred for greed/lust for power though.
  10. This is very myopic thinking. You still haven't answered my question. It's a straightforward question.
  11. Am I the man, the metal detector, or the steel toe safety boots? Or possibly the hole?
  12. Ding has been suspended for 14 days for obvious reasons. If you think this is harsh, please PM me.
  13. The only attention he deserves is from the US justice system.
  14. so you're a utopian basically. you just made something up and said it would be good if it was that way. do you have a revolutionary plan to achieve this? do you understand the material implementation of social democracy and why this is impossible? it seems not. were you just born? no fucking shit it's failing Why are you so belligerent? You're asking a person who lives in an actual social democracy why it would be impossible to implement it. So just to be super duper extra clear because I was born yesterday, you're saying that all capitalist nations are failing in providing the poor in their own countries things like housing, access to quality education, safe drinking water, access to healthcare, worker's rights, social security, and free speech, especially as compared with communism (even though, as you say, communism has never been implemented, but let's say with attempts at implementing communism such as the former USSR, or China up until 1978)? I note that wikipedia (garbage source I know) lists China, Vietnam, Laos, and Cuba as countries in the world where communism is the official state ideology, so maybe they would be good comparisons (even though China is not communist at all in their economic policy).
  15. So your argument, just to be clear, is that capitalism is failing the poor in their own countries in providing these basic desires (needs)?
  16. Lol that Ben Norton guy is in league with Max Blumenthal, so yeah, hard pass.
  17. Finland specific: https://www.jacobinmag.com/2019/12/finland-socialism-capitalism-welfare-state Sweden: https://www.jacobinmag.com/2019/01/ocasio-cortez-taxes-rich-sweden Social democracy in Scandinavia: https://www.jacobinmag.com/2018/12/hygge-holidays-design-denmark-social-democracy-solidarity So you don’t have to read Stalin and pretend he had the interests of anything except staying in power.
  18. The mix was so shit on this. But I was on headphones I think the entire time. Lost the original years ago when I accidentally reformatted a hard drive, so no chance of redoing it.

  20. Which is an interesting claim to make (not saying you're making it) considering China has been one of the largest borrowers and recipient of technical assistance, and have used (or attempted to use) that aid to carry out programs of resettlement and displacement. At the same time, the World Bank's loan conditions have evolved considerably over the years. The authors also note that loans are more dependent on timing as opposed to who the recipient is.
