  1. That was a decent read, cheers. Interesting to learn where Pixelord sources his sounds from :) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/101191/Pixelord%20vs%20Onyx.mp3 That reverse-engineering analogy of yours..bang on hehe when they say they use a lot of game sounds, do they use synths or do they sample directly from the games? any clue? I'm going to cop out and say "internet" so you would say those are sampled? and not synthesized? yeah i think they're sampled, or used a cracked vst or something, therefore "internet" it's quite diferent... haha, well personally it sounds loop heavy so I'm guess they sampled and chopped up bits. my knowledge of chiptune is limited, but I'm guessing, especially with the Russian tracks we've discussed, there's no point in messing with a soft-synth to get the sounds. I would bet they're utilizing a lot of sample sources and just tweaking those in a cracked DAW, maybe with some basic MIDI hardware

  4. Yeah he's fucking good. "Another Girl" was one of my favorite singles of 2011. Anyone hear all the brandy samples in this genre?
  5. This made my day! Never seen that film either, now I'm interested (though I've seen that particular LA drainage basin sooo many times.)
  6. Georgian chillwave. This Georgia. I checked this out in 2010, mostly because I used to live in Okinawa as a kid. Guess it's a reference to the island's well-known local life expectancy/diet.
  7. Ah, was going to mention Ghostek More Burial AND Ruskie-step: Nocow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJSWtjjawLA ^this sample should be known by all, i think a few watmmers would recognize it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVvEXoR6Ugs I actually enjoy most of what I hear coming out of Russia and the CIS Pfork had a good feature on some producers It's quite unpretentious but there is care and effort put in, just not overdone. It isn't slathered in irony or trendiness either like scenes in the US and Europe, nor does it lazily pander to existing dance styles like say, certain Jamaican and Brazilian electronic music. Hell, it almost fits into the stereotype of Russians reverse-engineering vehicles into their own solid but simple products. This is like the musical equivalent.
  8. i just got chills too. douche chills. exactly and the fact that a chillwave artist was told that didn't quite hit me until later that night
  9. Well well well I saw Glow-in-the-dark Native American himself last night in the crowd of a local garage rock gig. I wasn't nearly drunk enough to question him about his mediocrity. More importantly though, he was already being annoyed, possibly harassed, by this ridiculous art student looking fangirl. I was eavesdropping from the bar, she literally responsed to one of his statements "omg, I literally got chills from you saying that, I can so relate blah blah derp" Also he's short. He looked like an vampire extra from Lost Boys. I'm still convinced he frantically scrapped his Vega album to "create" Neon Indian as soon as Washed Out and Memory Tapes started sharing mp3s so he could ride the Chillwave. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  10. haha I saw that on your facebook page! completely forgot
  11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l24MRTxgvRE ^@2:00 (likely jazz)
  12. this track sounds like someone trying reallllly hard to make something you'd hear as the soundtrack to a montage in an 80s movie This was I absolutely hated: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlJ27Dcv4fc sample source http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-BBMOkUsXo He sounds better now overall. But I'm going stop being an apologist, the new Neon Indian LP is still a unremarkable album imo. His work as Ghosthustler and Vega was VGM-tinged blog electro, and he stooped both and started being "Neon Indian" in 2009. It's easier to produce and share music. People have more access to past music and art and instead of more timely, well-thought releases being more prevalent among the "hyped music" it's really just increasingly fickle fads and bandwagons. Sonically there were "chillwave"and "witch house" productions made years before any of those genres and scenes emerged. That's why 60s and 70s throwbacks in the 80s and 90s don't sound so forced. Now 80s and even 90s throwback tracks are coming out, often by producers who actually didn't live through those years or hear those sounds when they were popular. They instead browsed the internet, skimmed and barely absorbed a ton of 80s and 90s content, then made stuff like "chillwave." I'm sure a few of us have siblings or young friends who "love 80s culture" but were barely conceived and/or born that actual decade. Also, that's why I find hauntology releases way more interesting and enjoyable than a lot of purposely "retro" songs.
  13. Yeah I agree it's a good track. All the super hyped "chillwave" guys -Washed Out, Memory Tapes, Toro Y Moi, and Neon Indian - had generally decent but unmemorable albums this year. Era Extrana is WAY better than the first IMO. He's a good producer, I just hated that first album- the lofi sound on it is so forced.

  15. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLaSDTdthBI Someone in another VGM thread posted these, I had completely forgotten about them (and I beat the game) - had no idea I was listening to a DnB soundtrack back then! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C42xCauM9jU Excellent game and excellent OST http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_Bf59JHb3w ^pure DOS nostalgia Gameboy classics... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIWRa39K1gs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlaSGbv0658
  16. Saw that too, probably worth posting here: http://forum.watmm.c...ichard-d-james/ I never know how to fully react to the "press" bringing up debates and speculation, other than it won't change anything really. WATMM is always all over this beforehand anyway. Pitchfork, BBC6, etc all reported on the "new Aphex album on Warp" and it was back to normal immediately after. The only recent instance (I can think of) where an artist "came out" from behind a moniker after press speculation was the tacky "Burial is Fatboy Slim or Aphex" nonsense years back that The Sun stirred up.
  17. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4e__1ev0tI4 ^ Kinda wrong. Kinda perfect. It's like taking a pile of shit and throwing it to the heavens. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xg4POCIcEEI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YdfT28ifco ^ all of this
  18. I assume you've already heard Jesu? if you mean the rest of JKB's work as Godflesh: Hymns, the last album, was a better piece of work imo than Songs of Love and Hate, or Us and Them which followed that. on Hymns they dropped the drum machines and went for a rougher, more organic sound. some of the most brutal Godflesh tracks are on there: Well my favorite were probably the first four albums - up to selfless. Will check out Hymns though. I like Jesu - but again - it gets a bit samey. I haven't heard any Lull - recommendations? There's so much JKB work I need to listen to, a lot of which is more in the vein of Scorn than Jesu or Pale Sketcher: Techno Animal, JK Flesh, Curse of the Golden Vampire http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNmm0oGer3w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIRVX6IzEFI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFIhWEjinUI
  19. ^Literally found this at my local library, on display, and picked it up last week. It's a collection of a few stories about Vikings sailing west to America, Scandinavian pagans versus Christian missionaries, (insert metal lyrical topic here), etc. So far so good, I really enjoy the artwork. Besides some Marvel series my brother read I never got into comics too much. Mostly read Star Wars EU issues put out on Dark Horse. I also read Maus, which I enjoyed. It was a random Christmas gift actually.
  20. I guess this is best to post here, prolly jazz, but nonetheless really neat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUled-LLzI8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeSwal4jqyk
  21. After comedienne and actress Ellen DeGeneres came out as a lesbian, [Jerry] Falwell referred to her in a sermon as "Ellen DeGenerate." DeGeneres responded by saying "Really, he called me that? Ellen DeGenerate? I've been getting that since the fourth grade. I guess I'm happy I could give him work."
