  1. frankly it blows my mind that some people rate Untilted the highest because it's the album they heard first I thought people stopped being invented after Confield, ffs
  2. I agree on Apocalypto, that sequence is pure visual lsd. It's interesting how with so many historical films and tv shows, even if they have the budget for costumes and sets, there's always something about the camerawork, or green screen, or acting that is too self conscious, and tips the hand that you are watching a re-creation. But Gibson at his best certainly has a knack for "taking you there" in the most visceral way. I think the movie is actually all pretty good up until the escape from the city. The subsequent chase sequence is rather lame though. Didn't mind the surprise ending, though I can see why someone might dislike it. Overall I liked the actors Gibson chose, really like films with non-pro actors. If he had made the chase scene a bit more plausible it could have been a classic, I think. A simple, powerful story told in an unusual place and time.
  3. you know what I'll never understand about Top Gun. Kelly McGillis. Even when I saw it in theaters as a kid I wondered "why are they casting this older ugly lady with poorly capped teeth as his love interest?" (ok, I didn't know what caps were but I wondered "what is wrong with her teeth?") Watched it recently again with the wife and she just said "his girlfriend is really ugly, right?" I'll have to watch Witness again some day (which I remember liking, especially the corn death), but I really can't understand how Kelly McGillis got cast in these big blockbuster roles. Also doesn't surprise me in the slightest that she came out later as lesbian. She has zero sex appeal for men (if I'm any indication)...
  4. yeah I stick by my contention that they are the only band I like with such a long "winning" streak. Boggles my mind when you consider how groundbreaking their music is, too. I mean there are probably several other artists with equally good streaks who don't take as many risks, like Neil Young or Tom Waits or something. Guys who basically make great music but usually sound more or less the same. It's not that they "can do no wrong", as they've done several things I think are pretty mediocre, but I like that they continue to push things and tinker and explore. Their work ethic is really impressive.
  5. lol that makes it even more intriguing i assume since the guy from true blood is in it that at some point vampires start feeding on the well-coiffed troubadours?
  6. can anyone link to this scene? A cursory youtube search yields nothing, sadly...
  7. nobody remembers The Good Son, I quite liked it when it came out, saw it twice actually with different friends...while I was living in Indonesia of all places...
  8. heh between this and the previous "zaphod-on-prozac" sunny reviews of various recent films, I'm glad to see you're not predictable
  9. wow, the reviews on rottentomatoes look good, 93% recommended but 94% "liked it", those are unusually high audience marks. Hmm, subject matter looks depressing though...
  10. when you consider that basically every fucking thing in the film was 3d apart from their faces, it becomes a bit mind boggling... er, and to clarify, by 3d I mean vfx. Not the silly glasses.
  11. I like Dune even though I acknowledge it's a bad film. Sting makes me all wet. fix't for you So I just saw Gravity, finally. Great film! It was probably more of an 8/10, but I'll give it a 9/10 for being groundbreaking and ballsy. Lovely CG for the most part, better than Avatar for example. Some of the dialogue was clunky and the ending went a bit too over the top, but I really admired what they were trying to do with the film as a whole. Gave me some big feels from time to time, too. Would recommend it to anyone. My wife, being a country girl, didn't understand any of it. "So...they're on another planet right?" Um...
  12. nice list, I guess you haven't gotten the distinct whiff of BoC being quite derivative as well? The main melody of Semena Merkwhatev is lifted directly from the start of a Mark Isham track, and the melody for Cold Earth is a modified version of a Vangelis track (same one they borrowed the seagulls from for Happy Cycling if my thread memory serves). Basically in an album that I already felt was thin on musical ideas, turned out some of the better ones were copped from others.Disappointing really. Yeah I know where Aquarius came from and that they've sampled quite a bit in the past, but at least before it felt like there was enough good music to offset that or make it seem playful and insignificant. Not so with TH.
  13. I was pretty pissed off by the sloppiness of the Quaristice release (not least the fact that my metal deluxe edition had clear glue squirted all over the second disc, rendering it unplayable). But I feel the Exai collection of tunes was much more carefully selected for "alike-ness" and album flow.
  14. hi pbn, good to see you're still alive and kicking. I like Exai as a double album. I agree it's not as unique and groundbreaking as some of their other albums, but it makes up for it in delicious ear candy. Perhaps one word that fits it is "generous." To me it seems like quite a generous helping of tunes. It's comfort food that sticks to your ribs.
  15. I think Election was his only good film, unfortunately (though I haven't seen Citizen Ruth). Everything since then has been a steady downhill slide.
  16. not a documentary but I just watched this police interrogation of another police officer who happened to have committed a murder 20 yrs prior. Juicy stuff! http://youtu.be/t5ljpPTNvCM
  17. By the way this album is actually quite good, and by quite good I mean it has some high highs and low lows, but is never less than interesting. It may actually be brilliant but it has some really tasteless elements too (like co-opting Nina Simone for some stupid superficial rhymes about random shit, and well, basically all of Kanye's persona including the constant misogyny, paranoia and materialism)
  18. no, she got plastic surgery plus a major nosejob after babby her new nose is pretty but unfortunately doesn't fit her face, they moved it up so her upper lip area is too wide and she has chimpface.
