  1. for all the peeps having trouble with the sound of the NTS sessions on headphones, i highly recommend getting a listening app that has a crossfeed feature.

The best app i've found so far (for iOS) is "CanOpener". it has made a HUGE difference in the sound quality of these tracks for me on headphones. that flat, brittle quality is gone. everything opens up spatially and the sounds have much more weight & presence. all the tracks that use to annoy me now got me like :music:

unfortuantely, the CanOpener app is abandonware since it is no longer being developed but it still runs flawlessly on my iphone iOS 9. your mileage may vary but hey it's a free app so nothing to lose. Another option is the app "Neutron" which has a million options but the crossfeed feature itself is not as tweakable as the one in CanOpener.

  2. e0 sounds like it should be playing over the end credits of a1970's horror/suspense film. It's like a lost track from the Suspiria soundtrack. There's something really retro sounding about it to me. Maybe it's the chords or maybe it's that heavy phaser effect. I love the atmosphere.

  3.

I listened to session 1 through speakers for the first time yesterday and it went way up in my estimation. Going to leave it a few weeks before listening to session 2 again, I think I need to give each one some time to sink in.

i think these are kind of meant for speakers. i listened to session 2 a few times on headphones and didn't even know what i had until i played it on speakers. then i saw what people were talking about.

i have to agree. most of these new tracks have that ultra dry sound of the AE LIVE stuff. meant to sound nice & clear when played at high volume thru speakers in a concert venue / room. it suffers a bit when listening thru headphones.

  4. Do you guys think this is just the new way they're going to do things from now on - not much marketing and pre-announcement and instead just drop a bunch of music all of a sudden through a live radio show.  Or is this a sort of side-piece to their properly Warp-marketed releases?  It seems too secret to be the only thing that's going to happen from now on, it's not even listed on bleep.com when normally a new AE release would be on the front page right there

well, this is called 'NTS Sessions' which implies it is some material made / curated special just for the radio show, so i don't think they consider it a new album as such like Exai was. more like some new jams for the tru fans.

i'm sure when they release a new album proper there will be the usual promotion for it.

  5. one big difference i'm noticing between this era (ae live to now) and exai: the material is mixed very differently. while there's obviously tons of reverb and who knows what else, the bass and bass drum sounds on exai sound thicker, compressed, and overall more processed, whereas almost all of the 2015-2018 material sounds much "flatter" or less EQ'd or something.

so even if exai is also somewhat generative (although it sounds like it has more deliberate, less chaotic elements) it seems as if something changed in their mixing process. any thoughts?

I think Exai was the last time they had their crazy Max patch sequencing some actual hardware. Ever since then it's been all in the box. I think that accounts for the sound difference.

  6.

north spiral....The sonics are so bad.

What's the heck is going on here - Are there different versions floating around on the blerpstore, because my copy of the track sounds great

I dunno. Sounds to me like they made a banger of a track and then played it thru the telephone. All the bass is stripped away and all that is left is a sound like a parakeet on meth pecking and scratching at a piece of sandpaper.

  7. Am I wrong or does it seem like each “track” is extended much longer than the shorter, more rapid AE Live?

well yeah. they had 2 hours to play with instead of the usual 1 hour duration of their live sets.

some of the tracks are well served by this extra duration. others, not so much.

  8. i like how the broadcst just keeps looping, so you can tune in whenever.

at the same time, i don't want to listen too much because i am pretty sure these will be getting an official release at the end of the month, and i don't want to get burned out before i hear dem lossless frequencies.

  9. I've got a D-50 in my living room that I'm going to be putting a new battery in for somebody this afternoon.

It's really got me wishing I had a D-50, but not at today's prices.

EDIT: the real tragedy is that the guy I'm working on it for has had it since the 90s but never programmed it and just plays the factory presets.

get a D-550 instead. just checked eBay and the prices are very reasonable.

  10. yo phling, if i had your budget i would get this:

    https://www.specialized.com/us/en/crosstrail-elite-carbon/p/128955?color=239893-128955

if you're riding on occasionally rough roads/cobblestones/bumps, the front shocks are essential & will save your wrists. and you can lock it with one twist of a lever if you want a rigid fork.

in wet conditions, the disc brakes are life savers and require less maintenence & adjustment than rim brakes.

the carbon frame is light & absorbs vibration.

if you want to save your ass & back some pain, get this seat: https://www.amazon.com/Serfas-Suspension-Hybrid-Bicycle-Saddle/dp/B000UO6LJA/

haven't owned a car since 2002. ride my bike everyday. worked a bike courier job for 4 years. the above is what i've learned worked best for urban courier & commuting use.

    my current ride: https://www.specialized.com/us/en/crosstrail-disc/p/126335?color=208463-126335

my bike is nowhere near as nice as the one i'm recommending for you and its a great bike. solid & dependable. you really don't need to spend more than $800 - $900 or so to get a really solid bike even for 8 hours a day heavy courier use, but if you have the budget then go for it. i am totally sold on the specialized crosstrails.

  11. finally saw this this tonight and oh man was it bad. horrible writing. horrible direction.

i thought the characters did some stupid shit in prometheus, but they were einsteins compared to some of the morons in this film.

fully formed mini alien busts out of the captains chest, stands up, and puts his hands in the air like "ayyo wassup homiez?!"

was that part supposed to be funny? because i was laughing my ass off at that.

...not even gonna say anything about the flute scene.

please ridley. no more of this crap. give it up, man. damn.

  12. So now I've got my new laptop, which of course looks & works like a dream (for the price I paid it fucking better, though). However it's got no FW port for my aging Saffire LE and this means it's GAS for new audio interface time.

are you using a macbook? you can just get a firewire to thunderbolt adaptor. works fine with my Saffire Pro 14.

  13. i'm sure the green glove dude is Lynch's jab at superhero movies (green glove = hulk). that guy just comes out of nowhere, has some ridiculous origin story, then just wipes out the main bad guy with a gimmicky superpower. i have no doubt that Lynch hates superhero films & especially how they have taken over mainstream cinema for years now. he also wraps up the story in such a hokey, fake way, bringing attention to its artifice, before crossing over into the 'real' world with episode 18. illustrating how all those characters 'live inside a dream'.
