  1. the trailer looks beautiful, but it doesn't look like blade runner. too much open space, too clean, a lot of cgi... looks more like the ghost in the shell movie.

also doesn't feel like the blade runner vibe storywise. more like a typical modern hollywood action flick. huge budget so probably ultra compromised.

and who the fuck cast leto in this? ffs...

don't have high hopes for this one unfortunately.

but honestly... making a sequel to blade runner is so difficult just from the get go. should just leave it alone, man.

  2. i remember Happy Days & Erin Moran as Joanie. she was great on the show and I was sad when I saw the news. sounds like she had a troubled life after the show ended. rest in peace.

i wouldn't know who Aaron Hernandez was if it wasn't for the news about his murders & suicide. i don't follow sports.

definitely seems to be a wide age range represented on this forum. i remember when the Bill Cosby stuff was hitting the news, some people here were freaking out & others were going "who's Bill Cosby?"

it's funny because Happy Days & the Bill Cosby show were the dominant sitcoms of their times for years running. i would bet that a greater percentage of the population watched those shows back then then the percentage that watch Game of Thrones or Walking Dead today, especially given that back then there was no internet and cable tv barely existed so there were far fewer shows to choose from. everything was more focused. the media landscape is much more diverse & fractured today. micro genres, scenes that come and go in the blink of an eye, etc...

also ironic complaining about Erin Moran being mentioned here, how many people in the world do you think even know who Autechre are?

  3. damn.

this guy was so amazingly good. a prolific artist with such consistently high quality output.

if you never saw panasonic live, you missed out. such a powerful experience.

they would start the concert with a sine wave sweep, slowly increasing from low to high frequency. as they did this they would hit certain frequencies that would just make the venue vibrate, maybe the wooden floor or the glass at the bar or whatever. they would make note of these frequencies which were different for each venue (you'd see them actually writing them down, making marks on their instruments), and then incorporate them into their concert for the next hour. their show was by far the most 'physical' experience i've ever had at a concert. you'd feel everything inside your body. i remember walking out afterwards and literally feeling exhausted & sore just from standing there getting hit by the soundwaves.

mika leaves behind quote the discography. planning on revisiting his work in the coming weeks.

  4. love the Monomachine as well. wasn't the case at first but i persisted with it & it became one of my favorite pieces of kit.

it's the sonic equivalent of a scalpel. or an ultra hi-definition television. sharp. ultra precise. almost sterile, but extremely clear. present. not brittle like some people say. super detailed. hyper real.

and yes, you can make it sound 'warm' with proper use of the eq & filter.

i have a vivid memory of when i used it for the first time. i plugged in my headphones and played a few notes and the sound seemed like it was suspended a few feet in front of my face. it was so clearly occupying a specific place in the room it actually startled me. i've never experienced anything like that before.

  5. yeah, too bad about the essentially nonexistent support for osx though.. that said, I'm not totally against having a cheap dedicated windows laptop to program it.. hmmmmm

if you're talking about the g2, the editor runs fine on osx. i'm having no problems with it on mavericks.

  6. lol I gotta get on to using the monomachine + nord (+ octatrack?) together. honestly though I'm loving the nord so much that it's almost making me want to sell all of my other synths, get a bunch of nords (lead 2x or 4, maybe wave, G2) and control them all from octatrack.. I'm not that crazy.. yet.

nord g2 + octatrack is all you would need for the rest of your life. The possibilities there are truly endless.

both machines can control & sequence each other via midi, process each others output, etc...

  7. this is just course correcting after the negative reaction to Prometheus. so they sort of continue on with the Prometheus storyline but incorporate a lot more traditional Alien elements in the mix. everything they've relased so far regarding Covenant (the poster, the trailers) has basically been shouting "hey everybody! there are old-skool style aliens in this one!"

that trailer revealed so damn much about the movie. you can already see how its going to go. i'm sure this will be better than Prometheus but nowhere near as good as Alien & Aliens.

in terms of visual fx & design it looks great, but that is par for the course these days with big budget films.

  8. The Alien franchise is speciest. When will this outrage stop being accepted in Hollywood!

    seriously!

something that always bothered me about the first film. at the end when ripley flies off in her little ship and is getting ready to go to sleep. the alien is also taking a nap. he is just curled up in an out of the way place not bothering anyone, and she starts spraying him with those bursts of steam or whatever. i mean, if she just did it once i would have been "ha ha. very funny. you woke me up." but she keeps doing it over and over! understandably, the alien walks over to talk to her about it and just when he is opening his mouth to say something SHE BLOWS HIM INTO OUTER SPACE & SHOOTS HIM WITH A HARPOON!

and then the music is all heroic and happy and i'm like "are you kidding me?! what a mean bitch!"

  9. why don't they let the alien in the ship?! they just take off with him on the outside hanging on for dear life. he has to hang on with his hands and feet so then he has no choice but to bang his head on the glass to get in. and the stupid guy is just standing there looking at him like "uuuhhh... uumm..."  OPEN THE WINDOW AND LET HIM IN SO HE DOESN'T FALL!   so mean!

  10. based on the trailer this already looks much better than prometheus, but we've all been burned by trailers before so i'm not getting my hopes up.

and yeah, definitely a pastiche of alien & aliens. ridley is clearly course correcting after prometheus was so poorly received.

but given how bad that film was, i can't really say that i have a lot of faith in his artistic judgement or ability to make a good film now. which is a shame because he really made some good ones back in the day.

  11.

100% hardware sequencing. no DAW. they've said so in interviews.

    Monomachine, Machinedrum, Nord G2, & MPC 1000.

Pitchfork: The timing on that "Iera" track is pretty disgusting-- were you using fader controllers to manipulate MIDI data?

Autechre: No, that was purely programmed, grid-programmed, all onscreen, just nudging MIDI events around. That track is totally just mousin' it-- but there are other tracks, as on "Sublimit", that are just a drum machine up and running, 16-grid style, no swing or anything, everything just completely straight. On this record there's no generative work or fader based MIDI stuff.

Now it is 90% hardware sequencing lol

huh... well i stand corrected then.

at first i wondered why on earth you would want to be programming MIDI events in a DAW when you are dealing with the Elektrons and their badass internal sequencers, but when i listen to that Iera track again i think i understand. this was back in the day before the Elektrons had microtiming, so sending them external MIDI triggers could allow you to get really warped timing way off the grid while still using their internal sound engines.

unless the beats are all out of the DAW as well?  dunno - they really sound like machinedrum to me.

  12.

what do you think about sequencing? more from comp/daw or?

100% hardware sequencing. no DAW. they've said so in interviews.

    Monomachine, Machinedrum, Nord G2, & MPC 1000.

  13. lol - some of you guys are overthinking the details a bit, which can be fun but is the least interesting aspect of the series for me. it's the heavy philosophical / existential questions that i find so fascinating.

it's funny - i used to be anti-artificial intelligence, but this show actually changed my mind on the issue. recent world events have really driven home for me the fact that human beings are utterly incapable of governing themselves, co-existing, and caring for the environment. the artificial life forms that we seem so intent on creating are clearly the next evolutionary step of our species and hopefully would succeed where we failed. bring on skynet.
