whoever said andrea parker is correct.

 

plus her dj kicks album is sick. it has "the phantom" by rsw on it, mixed into afrika bambaataa. it has gescom and drexciya and dr octagon.

so good.

It's weird, when I got in to music seriously in the late 90s/early 2000s it was just an accepted thing that men and women (and trans folk, for that matter - I knew a statistically improbably number of trans folk involved in music, especially electronic music and designing synths and pedals, in the early 2000s) were in bands, produced, organized shows, and so on.  Since then, it seems like every music scene I've had contact with has become more and more segregated by gender and sex, and I have no idea why. Same thing with ethnicity and even economic and social class (to a lesser degree in that last one - class has always been an especially big social sorting factor in my experience), everything seems far more segregated now than it did 15 years ago.

I just remember watching a RA biopic video with her sort of frolicking in a bath at one stage as a poor traveling DJ. Just seemed a bit too much.
