I feel like a dick already so feel free to lay it on me for posting another headphone thread. this partly follows on chaos' thread b/c I've been realizing that my old sony mdrs have been kinda buzzing for about a year or two now. lasted more than a decade though.

I've almost taken the plunge and bought a pair of AKG 702s. I've read all the reviews but have not consulted with other headphone people really.

I've been pitting them up against the Audio Technica ATH-A700, Sennheiser 280 pro, Denon Ah-d2000 and the sr 125i Grados.

i listen to a fairly wide range of music but mostly ambient and idm as well as sufi music.

any opinions?

also do any canadians have a preferred shop to buy them at?

I am ready to buy Grado Sr80i as soon as my store gets it in stock. They told me on new years eve that they will have it in within two weeks but I havent received any word from them.

Where in Canada are you at ?? I am in Edmonton and they have this specialty audio/video store called The Gramophone where I am buying mine from.

Also what kind of "sufi" music do you listen to??

Before anybody writing any brand of headphone : we need your needs dude. Tell us how you'll use them. It's useless to compare supra-aural vs earbuds vs whatever when we have no idea how you want to use them.

Outside? inside? work? home? running? walking? :music:

oh. sorry dude. I'll be inside always hooked up to my computer as i dont have a sound system. as i said, ambient/idm mostly. i dont have a pref. btw open or closed but from what i've read if they don't need to be close then open is better.

i've read about also getting one of those HeadRoom Total BitHead amps to get rid of computer noise.

im in ontario. i know a few specialty shops but they seem to be WAY more expensive than amazon for example. i think the price diff. between the d-2000s is $150 less from amazon. so i mean a good place to buy them online i guess.

The 280's aren't even in the same class as the 701's. I'd only opt for the 280's if you are in a noisy place and can't do open cans and even then I'd opt for the 272's.

I´ve been looking into the Denon AH-D1100 lately, the 2000s are too expensive for me. But they got great reviews. I´d suggest you try them out at first, that way you really now what you will get.

The AKG k702s require a pretty decent amp to drive them properly. I'm not even certain the Total Bithead can drive them well enough. Lots of people find the AKGs a little light on the bottom end, too, but that's subjective-- they will be pretty thin if underdriven, though.

do you have a suggestion for an amp? If I don't even really know what the amp does should I be considering upgrading to such a fancy set of cans?

this set was actually on the list I did some pretty heavy research of but I heard that driven or not the bass isn't as good as the AKGs which might affect electronica specifically. They are, however, still reportedly almost perfect cans by all accounts.

k702s are wicked, i love mine.

good choice!

so, tompty, do you drive your phones or what??

i run them from my mackie 24-8 or straight from my 003 rack. i honestly think this is fine, unless you are ridiculously serious about it.

at first i found them really odd as I have never used headphones which were so flat in their response, the bass seems to be really lacking, until you realise thats how it should sound. most headphones bump the bass ridiculously .

I don't really have any recommendations for amps, but you might want to look at head-fi.org for some ideas; there's probably a hundred threads or so on the subject.

Before dedicated headamps came around, high-end gear was meant to be plugged into, say, a good receiver or some studio equipment, which, to oversimplify, supply a lot of juice. Dedicated headphone amps accomplish that same purpose; it's not about volume so much as getting enough good, clean power to the headphones' drivers. There are lots of good low-impedance headphones out there that can be driven well out of portable gear, computer soundcards, etc, but the 702s have a reputation for being finicky.

I power my HD650s (impedance: 300 ohms) out of an Apogee Duet, which isn't a dedicated headphone amp (it's a piece of studio gear-- a DAC-- which essentially bypasses my computer's soundcard; the computer supplies the music file, the DAC reads it), but its internal amp is powerful enough to do the trick (as it's designed to power studio monitor headphones). If I plug my HD650s into my iPod, they sound muddy and I need to crank the iPod volume to get the sound above a whisper.

My Grados (32 ohms--I think) still benefit a little from the Duet, but they still sound really nice out of the iPod. The biggest advantage here is that the Duet is a good DAC, so it's bypassing my shit computer soundcard to provide a really clean sound, and the amping benefits are secondary.

Which brings up another point-- GIGO-- Garbage in, Garbage Out-- if you have a less than awesome source and are playing shit quality mp3s, all the amping and high-end headphones in the world are only going to get you so far.

HD280s are only like 70 dollars now on some sights right? That's what I've got because for recording anything with a mic, monitoring in loud situations etc. they are great. They have a significant bass roll off at about 110hz, which I actually enjoy for listening as I am not a fan of flabby bass on "phat" mixes but yeah they aren't heavenly or anything.

i just snatched a pair of akg q701s (same as k701 but with detachable cord -- so prob same as k702 too) and really am liking them

im using my 2ch stereo receiver which seems to have plenty of power (and a decent dac) - but would still like to try some headphone amps(+dac) just to see if there is a worthwhile difference

im fairly new the headphones world - is a (copper) cable upgrade worthwhile for the 701s?

i used to chuckle about "breaking in headphones" - as i always thought the noticeable 'breaking in' was just the user's head becmoing adjusted to the headhone freq response, but now that i have these im not so sure. they were a little harsh at first at high volumes but now they seem to be taming down a bit. so ill take back my words on that one. the low end is a little light, but i prefer accuracy to sheer output.
