I'm not a Jazz music expert at all. Is this kind of laid back/chilled out jazz called something special?

 

The first thing that came to mind was Miles Davis' soundtrack to Elevator To The Gallows, a French film noir. Love this stuff.

yeah , i was gonna post Out to Lunch too. I've been listening to john Coltrane - Complete Village Vanguard which also has Dolphy. i love the bass clarinet.

cool jazz or west coast jazz. miles basically invented it. check out birth of the cool as well as the miles albums already recommended in this thread.

I also dig Coltrane, and some Sun Ra. Also love the more modern darkjazz stuff like The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble and Bohren & Der Club Of Gore. Austin Peralta's "Endless Planets" on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label is actually some damn good legitimate jazz as well, very worth checking out.

I actually already own 'Birth of the Cool'. I have just never really taken the to listen to it. But what a album!

 

What a fool i am, for waiting so long before listening to it.
