I get kinda depressed when I think that humans probably won't be capable of deep space exploration within my lifetime. Looking at those distances just makes it seem totally impossible.

 

Probably? you'll be lucky to see us parachute from the moon.

yeah the edge of the visible universe is 822,989,974,000,000,000,000,000 MILES away from us.

and it grows by 267,840,000 miles every day.

that is a number that is impossible to parse.

 

if the sun were a centimeter wide, the nearest star would be right around 250 miles away.

the earth would be slightly smaller than the head of a pin.

basically we are totally insignificant.

well actually i was being flippant

 

to paraphrase carl sagan, in the vastness of the universe, we're the only intelligent beings that we know of

so

in that sense, we are INCREDIBLY significant.
