hardware

- synths

- samplers

- drum machines

- workstations

- effects

- misc

software

- VST

- DAW

- sequencers

- misc.

... perhaps?

I would add subsections of Instruments and Effects to VST....

Are workstations really enough of a seperate entity to warrant a new category in hardware?

In actuality, I think maybe a more stremlined approach would be easier for everyone and promote more entries:

Hardware:

- Generators (Synths, Samplers, Drum Machines)

- Signal Routing & Processing (Effects, Mixers, Amps, etc)

- Recording (Minidisc, ADAT, VHS, Casette, 8-track, Vinyl (!?!))

Software:

- VST Instruments

- VST Effects

- Stand Alone Aps (DAWs, Audio Editors, etc)

But then, the more sub categories there are, the less Im inclined to look at things, so maybe its just me!

I would love to write some reviews btw. I could also edit some for basic quality, although I don't have as much hands on knowledge with a broad range of gear here as others. Perhaps Logan5 or one of the Berklee bunch? (Kcinsu or William S. Braintree) would want to?

lol no, I was just kidding.

I actually have a legal copy of Reason 2.0 lying around somewhere.. I might bust it out sometime and upgrade to 3 and try to go all combinator on people.

I use Renoise mostly, though I also have FL Studio 5 and Buzz.

I was also making a slight joke based on the "Luke Vibert uses Renoise" thread that's kicking around.

I'm not very familiar with IPB, but i'm not expecting much from that back-end...

as for categories, let's not forget studio gear:

- monitors
- audio interfaces (usb/firewire/etc)
- rack effects
    » dynamics (compressor/gate)
    » reverb/delay
    » etc
- microphones
- headphones
- midi controllers
    » keys
    » control surface
- turntables
- mixers (console/dj)

i think the whole thing should be laid out like so...

recording
    -hardware
    -software

synths
    -hardware
    -software

etc...

and be accessible also via:

hardware
    -synth
    -recording
    -etc

software
    -synth
    -recording
    -etc

  • 4 weeks later...

I haven't forgotten about this guys - so you would say the basic breakdown is between hardware and software?

The CMS is very flexible, so we can always add sub-sub categories if need be.
