  1. We can all agree that whatever promise social media may have once had will be well and truly gone when Yahoo Answers closes this summer.
  2. One of these things is not like the others...
  3. One good thing I'll say is that I've been back on there a little bit this spring in a few specific, and some of the the DIY video art groups on there are really an amazing resource.
  4. I don't know if it has already been mentioned, but part of the reason Florida is so Florida is actually that any official interaction between police and citizens, no matter how small, is part of the public record, which isn't the case for other states. Because every weird little thing is out there, they get picked up for slow news day stories and suddenly it seems like Florida is he world center for people doing dumb stuff. That doesn't mean that the stereotypes about Florida are any less true, but it DOES mean that the other states are a lot more like Florida than we realize.
  5. The only reason I started Facebook was because back in the mid 2000s when it had just opened up to the general public I was planning a side project with someone who insisted on using it instead of email. After that I didn't log in again for about 5 years, until I moved to a new city that didn't have an active local music/art messageboard to keep track of shows. But I never liked it and by early 2015 I was so sick of the way it made me feel about myself and a lot of people I knew who were great in real life but awful on Facebook that I quit. I went in to it resenting it and left it resenting it. The only reason I ever used Twitter was back when phones were limited to 10 or 20 SMS recipients and I was organizing a little thing that had about 50 people on the contact list, so Twitter seemed like a good way around that, but the text-to-tweet function was so unreliable that it didn't even work for that.
  6. I never used Friendster. I had a Myspace but never paid attention to it. The drummer from my first band was on Makeoutclub for a few months during its beta but he got weirded out by the whole concept pretty quickly and quit, which makes him the first person I know of to delete social media, before it was even a coined term AFAIK.
  7. I deleted Facebook in 2015 but I still have a second one I use very occasionally since Facebook groups are the only way to get support for some gear. Haven't logged in to Twitter since 2009 or 10, I don't even remember my username. Occasionally, grudgingly on Discord even though it's just a centralized, proprietary version of IRC that isn't as interesting as IRC used to be. Never got involved with any others. Sometimes I think it would be worth getting back on Facebook to have more contact with old friends I don't see in my daily life, but it takes about 5 minutes on there for me to not want anything to do with it. The hard stuff to get away from is Youtube and Twitch, I watch stuff on there all the time unfortunately.
  8. Found a moderately scratchy 12" of Sandstorm at work today and I'm playing the FUUUUUUUUUCK out of it
  9. Depending on your price point there are a lot of options. For VHS I still use a really old Aja Kona LHe but I wouldn't recommend it now. It looks nice but it was already obsolete when I got it (that's how I could afford it). For everything else I've been using a one or two geenration old Startech branded OEM version of some expensive Japanese capture device retrogamers swear by because it can handle all sorts of nonstandard resolutions, and I've had good luck with that. The Startech part number is PEXHDCAP60L but there's a new version out. I went with the old one because it was cheaper and had years of being used for game capture, where the currentone was pretty new at the time and people weren't sure if it was still as accepting of weird signals. If you're doing VHS you'll eventually need some kind of timebase corrector, otherwise if you try to capture a tape that's at all worn you'll get dropped frames. Really high end, professional TBCs were nearly free when I was shopping for this stuff (I have three and spent between $20 and $40 for each one - but the $40 had retailed for $4600.00 less than a decade earlier) but they're getting more expensive now, unfortunately. The only alternative to a TBC is to get a video mixer with timebase correction built in but that's even more expensive. The video art revival really ended the era of cheap/free SD analog video gear.
  10. Now that I've finally shed the Firewire 400 I might seriously consider getting one of these for my next computer. Not the most powerful or cost effective but it would be really good as a portable recording/streaming machine and still more powerful than the old Dells I'm using for recording and streaming right now: https://www.dfrobot.com/product-1729.html The big determining factor would be whether or not I could get it to work with my older PCIe capture card AND A GPU FOR HANDLING REALTIME VIDEO ENCODING (which is what would make it usable as a streaming platform), if it did then I'd definitely go for that in a DIY custom enclosure with a touchscreen, solid keyboard, a couple drives, a capture card, and maybe MIDI IO and/or some custom UI elements via the Arduino section over a laptop any day.
  11. Also we're in the middle of the biggest silicon shortage in human history AND a GPU bubble because crypto miners are overbuying and pushing the prices up. Probably/hopefully prices will improve in a year or so. Part of the reason i spent my tax return on that Studiolive 32 instead of replacing my 10 year old PC like I originally planned. My main, non-music computer is an Asus gaming laptop I got used for $300 a couple years ago and it works pretty well, good enough for messing around with Reaktor and editing 1080p video without any issues, but with heavy realtime video stuff like SMode it struggles.
  12. FTFY CEOs are CEOs Anyway, based on what usually hapens when a holding company takes over, I give it 3-5 years before we see the Elektron OctaWolf.
  13. The basic idea is that if the reverb is percived as the space a sound is in, and the amount of predelay between when you hear the dry signal and when it hits the reverb is percieved as the distance between the sound source and the closest reflective surface, by using slightly different amounts of predelay for every sound source that gets sent to that reverb you can get a more convincing sense of them all happening at different positions in the same space. It doesn't have to be realistic either, it just makes things sound different/bigger/more vivid/whatever.
  14. Looks like it's time to start getting a bunker mentaklity, assume Elektron will probably start dropping support for discontinued products after a few years stock up on MKI spare parts from tech support for future repairs. Apparently you can buy an entire new MKI control board from them for something like $240 right now, which might be a good investment if you're someone who plans to use the thing for another decade or more. That, a few individual switches and a fader would be a whole lot of insurance.

  16. I miss Windows 2000, when it showed a running log of everything that was happening during installation or updates so if something went wrong you actually had a decent chance of figuring out what it was.
  17. Yeah that would do it, I didn't know Live had track delay built in (but you could use any number of free plugins in the same routing setup).
  18. The thing is you don't want to delay the dry signal, only the pre-effect send signal, so I don't think track delay would work? In Reaper it's just a matter of using extra channels in a track, probably most easy/CPU efficient to do the delay on the sending tracks rather than the receiving one. For a stereo track, add two more channels, insert your predelay plugin of choice and route the audio to it on channels 3 and 4, add a send that sends only 3+4 to 1+2 on the receiving track, and then if you need to make sure that only the dry signal gets to the output of the sending track you could turn send-to-parent off and use another send to rout it to the master or a submix, but this only really matters if you're doing surround mixing or using folders instead of busses for submixes. TDR Proximity is fantastic, I haven't used it before a reverb in a long time but I remember it sounding great, especially if you're automating the send and use Proximity instead of the send level. Actually, the van driveby sound at the beginning o this track was done mostly with Proximity: https://elemental95.bandcamp.com/track/westbound-on-the-interstellar-hwy I recorded a snippet from this record playing through some kind of 80s DIY 2" powered speaker I found on the curb on garbage day that had leaky capacitors inside and went back in the trash right after the recording, layered it with some engine and screeching tire sounds that were synthesized from scratch and recorded live in two passes on the Redsound EleVAta, and then routed a submix of that through Proximity and some kind of simple pitch shifter. Automated pan, Proximity distance and a tiny bit of pitch shift for a subtle doppler effect. There's probably a reverb send with automation, too, but I might have just used the reverb in Proximity.
  19. Valhalla has a few plugins, most of them are $50 but some are free. If you ever pay for a reverb plugin they're all near the top of the value-for-money heap, really nice sounding and can cover a LOT of different sounds with a simple interface. VintageVerb is the most popular. Anyhow, what you should do now is download something with a very different sound (maybe one of the TAL plugins, or that Lexicon one hat came with the Presonus) and then run stuff through two contrasting reverbs at the same time in parallel (or series, but start with parallel). Also, I don't know how easy it is to do in Live, but something that works really well is using one reverb instance for all of your tracks but putting slightly different predelay on every send that's routed to it, so it's like the reverb plugin is a room and the amount of delay on each send is that sound's position inside the room. Voxengo Latency Delay is a perfect plugin for that, because it's simple, lets you dial in very short delays very accurately, and it's free. https://www.voxengo.com/product/latencydelay/ Honestly I don't usually do this because even in Reaper it's a bit of a pain to set up, but it does sound really good. I wish Reaper (and all other DAWs) let you delay any aux send as a built in feature, it would be super useful.
  20. This made me spend way too much time looking for Memory from Cats played on a Sound Blaster 16.
  21. Well, I have all my cables very unprofessionally run in front of my very old but very professional Tascam cassette deck, but that's OK because one of the wires broke off of the play head about a week after it was given to me and it's going to be really hard to repair, because it's almost unreachable with a soldering iron but if I take the head out to fix it the right way then I'll need to do a full realignment, so without a calibration tape that would cost a couple hundred dollars if I can even get one at all it's not an option. So for now it just sits there and looks cool. EDIT: also the whole thing is on an old, secondhand kitchen cart.
  22. It was painful the first time too, not so much at the site of the shot but lower on my bicep (same place it was most sore this time). I think it's pretty common, they tell everyone that their arm will be sore for a few days at the place I got both my shots. My mom's arm swelled up a little when she got her second one. I think it's just how I react, hopefully the boosters will be more like the first one. The other symptoms weren't as bad for me as most people I know, but the arm pain was nuts. Basically gone now.
  23. That second shot is no fun. I was prepared to feel a lot sicker than I did, but I wasn't prepared for how painful it would be. I've had a few painful things happen in my life and I'd put that at #3, just below e.coli poisoning. For about 12 hours I literally couldn't use my left arm because the pain was so bad that if I tried to bend it more than a few inches it would just overwhelm everything. Full on rolling in and out of bed because I couldn't prop myself up on my elbow, almost unable to get a shirt off or on, unable to stand up fully, having pick my left arm up with my right hand and move it around if I needed to reposition it levels of pain for about 10 hours, mostly in my bicep but running all the way from my left ear to the last joint of my left thumb and everything in between (for some reason my left fingers were fine). None of the other symptoms were that bad, had a fever of around 99.7 for a couple hours late the first night (normal for me is around 97.4-97.8 so 99.7 is most people's 100.5), just bad enough that if I got out of bed I'd start shaking and my teeth would chatter even though it was in the mid 60s, but not as bad as I remember fevers being (other than maybe an hour or two in January that were borderline I haven't had a fever in at least 8 years before this). Worth it, of course, but pretty intense. EDIT: the other weird thing is that it hardly improved at all until about 20 hours after the shot, and then it started to get better really quickly. I'm still sore and tired now (almost exactly 50 hours later) but I only feel slightly worse than I did the morning after the first one and my arm's actually a little less sore than that already (but my neck and shoulder are still sore and they didn't hurt at all after the first one).
