  1. I've been watching a lot of old British horror films and BBC productions lately, stuff along the lines of the original Wicker Man which is awesome. Not scary as such, but it does really well at establishing a creepy, pagan, wrongness vibe that builds up throughout. Also watched The Stone Tape, a 1972 BBC horror one-off. The premise is cool- that ghosts, etc, aren't supernatural but are traumatic events 'recorded' by the actual building itself- but it really hasn't aged well, and Jane Asher ruins it by chewing the scenery and generally being histrionic. It was still worth a watch though.

On the other hand, the 1968 black-and-white version of MR James' 'Oh Whistle and I'll Come To You' has aged way better. Really understated acting and it actually manages to be genuinely creepy in places. Totally awesome.

About to watch The Blood On Satan's Claw, another gnarly old British folk-horror type film. Really enjoying this type of stuff lately, a lot of it seems to have fallen off the radar

If you haven't seen it yet 'A Warning to the Curious' and 'The Signalman' are worth a watch, some of that MR James stuff is fantastic.

  2. recently moved and found an awesome pub about 3 mins from my house...got a nice riverside beer garden which i made use of earlier whilst the sun was shining. had a pint of ale brewed for, and named after the pub - the william morris. was lovely.

Definitely not the William Morris in Hammersmith then.

  3. Snowtown

Was like a mashup between Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer and a Ken Loach film, but grimmer.

Based on true events, haven't researched that yet.

Fuck. I bought this off a bloke a few months ago at a boot sale and asked him if it was as bad as I'd heard, he said he no longer wanted it in his house. I've not had the bottle to watch it yet.

edit - Incidentally if you like horror they are going over this on the bloodygoodhorror.com podcast this week, it's one of the better film podcasts I've heard.

  4. The ABC's of Death - Mostly shite but one or two segments were fun. The letter L was probably best, M by far the worst further confirming my belief that Ti West is an overrated fuckstick. The letter F is basically WATMM in film form.

Anyone seen The Master? Worth a watch?

i'm not sure how i feel about it. it's very intense and performance driven but it lost me about half way through the movie and never recovered. i can maybe recommend watching it just to see joaquin phoenix humping a naked woman made of sand and philip seymour hoffman getting jerked off by amy adams while she gives him a pep talk in the mirror.

    dude, spoilers!!!

Joaquin's shining moment mentioned here is in the first two minutes so I wouldn't worry about spoilers, was he wanking off into the sea too? I also realised in the first two minutes that I was probably too spaced out to give this the attention it deserves but it'll be saved for another day soon.
