Oh I see, I’ll check it out :ok:

Seasons 1-3 are all great. I couldn’t really get into the 4th season. This new one has some stuff going for it and some stuff going against it (like some pretty unbelievably over-the-top Minnesota accents).
Season one and three are probably the best. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is quite fall-in-lovable.

  2. Stuck on a plane again and got to watch the Dungeons and Dragons movie. I’m happy to say that it was actually loads of fun. Actually pretty well written and put together. Made me regret not seeing it in the theater.

On the return flight I started watching the new Avatar movie and it wasn’t terrible but wasn’t great either. It’s a lot like the first one but with big fish and less heart.

  3. Just saw the first episode. I don’t know. It doesn’t feel like a winner, but I’ll give it another episode or two before I throw in the towel.

    Spoiler

Nothing feels grounded at all, which is fine, I guess, but lots of things happen that just feel uncomfortable. Jennifer Jason Leigh seems too young to be that dude’s mom.

Also, those Minnesota accents are pretty fuckin corny. I have a lot of friends in Minnesota and zero of them sound like that.

Mandy looks like Stranger Things for adults. Which is a good thing

The same director (Panos Cosmatos) did an episode of Cabinet of Curiosities that was lush as fuk. I posted about it a while ago, probably in the TV thread.

So I've been microdosing mushrooms for the past 4 days (today day 5) and it is quite nice. I bought the capsules a few months ago but was reluctant to start since I've had bad trips in the past - (I've had very enjoyable trips as well though) - and my head is full of garbage these days so it didn't seem like a good risk to potentially find myself deeper in the recesses of that shit.

But it has been a good time to try it because I am working less and have more time to get out and wander around. The best thing to do is to just get out and enjoy the scenery and colours and listen to tunes. I've been augmenting it with weed as well. The microdose is, of course, a microdose so I'm not tripping out or anything. But it's not nothing either. Some nice mushroomy elements - very very mild visuals, possibly some slight colour enhancement (hard to tell since it's a beautiful time of year already), and most importantly a deeper understanding of the new Ae live sets :emotawesomepm9:

Hard to tell if it's doing anything for my mood or mental health overall. My problems with that stuff run deep and it is all complicated by longterm medications, persistent unhealthy lifestyle habits and whatnot, so I'm not naively expecting this to overhaul my mental health or cure my depression/mood instability/anger issues for good or anything like that. But I'm dipping my toe in. I'm not doing this in a specifically controlled way, besides choosing to take one capsule every day in succession vs taking them occasionally. I might skip one on wednesday but generally I aim to take one per day (afternoon) until all 14 that I bought are gone.

    :datboi:

I’m curious if you or anyone else has kids. I know tech bros etc microdose at the office all the time but I’m curious what the experience of parenting is like with microdosing. I have a friend who is a stay-home dad and he tells me he loves to get stoned and play with his kid. As a past-life stoner / psychedelic warrior, I would be a bit anxious about not being alert, so I wouldn’t smoke out while watching my kid but I’ve never microdosed so I don’t know the parameters, but I’m curious. I certainly wouldn’t want to trip balls with my kid, but I know it’s probably not the same.

    invasion is shit...

the peripheral quite as well but it's wrapped in glittery microplastic...

ghost train I have no clue..

I’m mostly curious about Ghost Train because I’m still obsessed with true crime docs. Just watched the 2 part Torso Killer “series” on Hulu. Very interesting case. I saw another doc series about him that was also pretty well done that I strongly recommend watching before watching this new one.

I was on leave from work recently and watched/rewatched a bunch of movies in my spare time. this included the two most recent movies in what is now a loose trilogy by Paul Schrader, beginning with First Reformed.

    MG_PS_Trilogy_ENG.jpg?w=780

I wasn't even aware the last two existed until I saw ads for Master Gardener which is coming to cinemas here soon.

I like all of these actors a lot. and I like Schrader's thing a lot, his "alienated man" canon with its archetypes and tropes going all the way back to Taxi Driver. however, it has to be said that with each new movie in this vein, he has found less and less to mine. or perhaps it's not that there isn't anything more that can be said but rather that he's strayed further and further from what he's good at by experimenting with things that have not delivered. for one thing, I think he's a much better writer than he is a director. in the latter capacity, he has a tendency to make odd stylistic choices that don't quite jive well together, and I don't think he always has people around him who can bring out the best in him.

First Reformed remains exceptional to me. I was and am still moved to tears by parts of it, because of how simply, directly and unflinchingly it speaks to some of the issues of our time - not just the present-day unfolding catastrophe but the philosophical/existential dimensions of it all, which have been questions for us since the beginning. The Card Counter has some strengths, namely Oscar Isaac and his ability to speak volumes with just his body language, an expression and a few words intoned a certain way. Master Gardener has a nice bucolic mood to it, deliberately trying to be more optimistic against the gloom ("gardening is a belief in the future"), but in spite of good performances from Joel Edgerton et al, it's pretty loose and hardly bites. I'd say the last two are are both still worth a watch if you like Schrader's thing, but don't expect the tour de force of First Reformed.

I hate scoring art but just as an attempt to weigh these against each other, I'd probably go: First Reformed - 9/10, The Card Counter - 7/10, Master Gardener - 6/10. this is scoring by feel, not with complete objectivity, so probably a bit generous.

as an aside, this music from The Card Counter encapsulates the feel of the whole movie and is one of the best things about it.

Thanks for real for the proper review. Also thanks because I absolutely loved First Reformed (imo maybe his best script since taxi driver) and I had absolutely no clue that the other two films existed. It’s embarrassing because I consider myself a soft Schraeder fan. I say “soft” because his work, however great, almost always feels like a punch in the gut. You never go into one of his films expecting to have a laugh. I’m glad he does what he does, though.

  8. I mean, if you can read that and not feel a little frightened about having that sort of person in power then I don’t know what to say.
When leaders “root out” people, it never really looks great in history books… but I guess that’s the “radical left thug” in me talking.

To be fair, being a YouTuber who preys on and relentlessly trashes a human “meme” for clicks is way more gross than being the meme.

The fact is that Mr. Frankenhooker Shirt doesn’t exist in our reality without Corey Feldman.

  10. I listened to BBC Cymru almost every day while on my recent trip to Wales. As I do not speak Welsh, I didn’t know the names of the shows, disc jockeys or artists that they played but I was shocked at how much of the music I really enjoyed. A lot of of it that I heard sounded to me like poppier versions Ty Segall or Dungen. Lots of psychy, sometimes folky or fancy indie rock stuff, with lots of catchy hooks. I wish I knew more about what it actually was. I’ll never know, probably.
What was particularly impressive was that 100% of the tunes had Welsh lyrics, which is hardcore as fuck. Those bands could easily choose to sing in English, seeing as they almost certainly are already speaking English and would benefit infinitely by just opening up their markets, but they are repping their shit hard. Pretty dope.

  11. Stuck in bed with a stomach bug yesterday. Got to binge the rest of Usher. It was ok.

    Spoiler

I think my main problem is that there are no likable characters. The closest thing to a likable character until Lenore starts talking late in the series is Auguste
and, let’s be honest, his character is totally flat.

I could also really deal without Flanagan’s tendency to pile on a saccharine, sappy ending. Hill House was near perfect until the end. I read the original ending was almost exactly the same except the window from the red room was on the wall at Steven’s house, meaning that they never left Hill House… which is way spookier / better. Apparently he didn’t want to abuse the characters or some shit but he already abused them for ten episodes straight, so…

“Poe’s Greatest Hits Medley Mashup” would have been a better title.
