  1. Now I'll watch it just for the soundtrack - love Ben Frost.
  2. Ozark is great. The money laundering schemes are basic but on point. The wife is ridiculous, but Jason Bateman’s character is good.
  3. The problem with this season is there's nothing really that interesting about it from a sociological/psychological perspective. No questions about consciousness/self-awareness, nothing really existential. It's not bad, but so far it's not as good as the first two seasons.
  4. Ozark Season 3 - really fucking good. Westworld Season 3 - what the fuck are they thinking.
  5. Ah yes, the infamous MP3 player lost on a plane.
  6. Quite enjoying the COVIDCLOUD Dump. Love to hear prememory100N pt1!!!
  7. Idiotic, stupid, juvenile... people with mental retardation shouldn’t have to suffer from being compared with politicians as well.
  8. S03E01 was a clusterfuck. Like everything was just mashed together. Episodes 2 and 3 were better. But I'm inclined to agree that they've bitten off more than they can chew here. I'll watch though, the visuals are pretty and the near-future tech is cool.
  9. lol jesus, even dictators in third-world countries are more subtle than that.
  10. Well aware of that (HK being the epicentre of Chinese film), but Xi's handling of HK is indicative of the failure of Chinese cinema, symbolizing China's downward trajectory in their ability to influence global policy through the use of soft power (I'm trying to keep this conversation from going into an Asian international relations thread).
  11. Yes those are good films (I haven't seen Dead Souls for disclosure), but I'm talking about movies like Raise the Red Lantern, Hero, Ashes of Time, Chungking Express, Happy Together, Eat Drink Man Woman, John Woo's material from the early 90s, (and Red Cliff), Infernal Affairs. That period of time really spread China's soft power (along with other things, but no one here wants to talk international relations and we're supposed to be discussing coronavirus in this thread), and Xi is laying waste to a lot of that. Saying that, blaming China for the coronavirus is straight-up race baiting. The Chinese initial response was not great, but fuck Trump for trying to blame China for America's issues.
  12. Uhhh what? GDP, still behind US and EU. Soft power? Maybe 20 years ago when they had a bunch of innovative filmmakers coming out of Hong Kong, but what was the last Chinese film to make any impact on the art world, let alone the mainstream? Meanwhile, South Korea, a population with a 10th that of China’s is killing it with those ridiculous boy bands and girl groups, and parasite. Japan’s anime still gives it way more soft power than China. China flexes its money/military in Africa and SE Asia (military there more than anywhere else) but don’t kid yourself, the last 5 years have been a terrible drag down of the good will the Chinese had built up.
  13. Sorry, obviously I meant they would never know when they were being watched, just that they know they would be watched at some point. North Korea has that on lock by the way. Except they do it with humans in the village (or apartment complexes in the cities). There are multiple observers per site, but not even they know who the others are.
  14. What? Just have cameras in the cells. Guard site could be totally remote and the inmates would never know.
  15. Big glasses comspiracy.
  16. Make sure you send reminder please! Can’t wait to add to my squee collection ? will it be on unearthed again?
  17. Very interesting. That analysis of the mortality rate seems to be in line with this article from the New England Journal of Medicine: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMe2002387 Note who one of the authors is of that article....
  18. WTF? Is trump running a home shopping network on the side? Lol apparently he displayed the thing upside down. But I still don't understand what the fuck he is doing advertising a product...
  19. Fired up the 2.1 system for the laptop at home, (Altec Lansing VS4121), worked fine the first day. Second day, right speaker isn't working. The headphone jack on the right speaker is working though. So I'm guessing that the problem in the chain is between the speakers in the cabinet and the spot where the audio cable routes the signal to either the headphones or the speakers. Any thoughts from people on here about how easy this would be to fix?

It's very interesting that someone who was so close to the Buddha seemingly failed to understand one of his key teachings - that impermanence is one of the few certainties in life, and as such, death is not the end, but merely a transition.
  21. Thanks for sharing a very interesting read. I wonder if Kawabata practiced Soto or Rinzai Zen. Or if he was more sincretic in his approach.
