I've been rewatching Veep and the last few seasons in particular are some of the best comedy I've ever seen.

Rewatching Veep too, still in s02 though (and you can already see the pace and dynamic working their magic, no matter how great s01 is). I'm just dreading the cruel / unfair final plot : amazingly written / acted / captured, but damn, so freaking painfully immoral (yet perfect for the show).

s02 is pretty awesome with the introduction of Kent and Ben, I love what they bring. So many incredible characters in this show. And I know it only gets better.

    Amazing series yeah

    Releases January 20, 2023, via https://threeop.bandcamp.com/ & https://tsrono.bandcamp.com/album/vale

    Lost in a wooden thicket
    Surrounded by mist and fog
    The foliage is dense
    Reflections glimmer on the pool
In this realm there is ebb and flow
Echoes of all that has come to pass
Premonitions of what is yet to be
At the intersection of then, now, and beyond
    You are in the vale
We are all in the vale

    ---

I've had the pleasure to listen to tsrono's work for years now. It's the work of a kindred spirit that constantly inspires me. And it's some of the lushest, most atmospheric, and skillfully varied electronic music you will hear. Vale is the latest entry in this rich body of work, and within it you will find a delicately honed soundcraft that eschews nostalgia for raw originality. And it's with nothing but joy that we get to release vale on 3OP.

In addition to an extensive self-released catalog, tsrono has released with various outlets such as allosst on Point Source Electronic Arts, n-v center on Not Yet Remembered, arche on 1834; remixed for Temp-Illusion on Pend Reworks; and collaborated as 0.syx, releasing Radials on Schematic.

For the sonic construction of vale, tsrono cultivated rhythms, textures, and drones from analog & digital hardware. Included with both the digital and physical release are four select bonus tracks from the vale sessions at cross shores.

We know vale will envelop and enchant you like it has us. Enjoy.

  3. Tom's a proper Max don, working for c74 providing fantastic educational content and delivering stellar music.
Ben's setup is Max + hardware synths.
Noxin's pure Max AFAIK, same goes for IKTS.
Synalegg's just switched from PD to Max.
Kindohm has a few Max jams online which are just killer.
Eczem released some Max LPs in the past and is incorporating it back in his set-up (incredible WIPs up his sleeves I must add).
I for one am embracing the Live + Max / M4L combo and am currently patching my own variably generative sequencer.

ps: Calum also works for c74 and told me about his Max tunes, I haven't listened to these yet but from what he told me I just can't wait.

Fingers crossed then. DV1 looked like a sick venue too it shut soon before I turned 18 I would've loved to see them there.

It was a pretty weird venue actually, wild bouncers at the doors. At least in its pre-2010ish incarnation. WATMM Lyon meetup whenever's Ae's back in town @d-a-m-o @milkface  ?

Wait they're performing in Lyon or has the show already happened????

Nope, nothing planned, pure wishful thinking from me. But, as they've played here quite a few times (from memory, at DV1, Epicerie Moderne, Plateforme and Le Sucre... and a fifth place ? not sure on. that last one) over the last two decades, I suppose there are local promoters likely to book them.

It is not propely an electronic festival, but more a social event

Aren't all festivals / concerts like that ? No matter who's playing, the music is - alas - a sonic tapestry to most in such context.

    btw, Lyon gig pls.

    Out now !

    ENG

I met Amédée de Murcia almost 20 years ago, via a message board (dedicated to electronic music, obviously). He’s a French electronic musician currently living in Saint-Etienne.

Somaticae is his flagship project, under which he’s published a captivating and shapeshifting body of work: from his first releases - think Autechre, Errorsmith and Drexciya - to his subsequent ventures into vastly improvised, texturized noise-heavy yet groovy AF territories, his discography is dense and luxuriant. I’m not even talking about his numerous bands: OD Bongo, Balladur, Jazzoux, Insiden… ! TD; DR: dive into his back-catalog (and thank me later).

Here, Somaticae melts club music tropes, using dissonance and micro-tuning. Présent Perpétuel revolves around a 4 parts long-form piece, Faux Futur. Narratively irresistible, definitely epic, it’s an absolute, incendiary banger. Mental and moist, all at once.

The balance between sophisticated composition and sound design, and immediate and sharp delivery is perfect. Somaticae records his tunes live, stretching his studio performances to get out of his comfort zone to eventually share the bits that surprised himself. And down the road, the audience as well.

Présent Perpétuel begins and ends with two short pieces, titled eponymously: contemplative and suspended, out of time. De Murcia’s talent for melody shines here.

We've been listening to this EP over and over for months now: we are happy to announce that you are about to do the same.

  8. Using algorithmic and generative processes for the only sake of it will just result in bland, utterly boring music. IMO what sets Ae, William Fields, Synalegg and a few other ones head and shoulders above most is that they use their computers (and what computers have to offer) to voice their creativity, to express something... tl;dr : to make actual bits of music. They are fantastic curators of their own arts too.

I'm super lucky to have ongoing discussions with Synalegg and WF : William keeps on refining his instrument - FieldsOS - and practices it as much as possible, just like a guitarist would practice the guitar. Synalegg has his own music system he can use in many different ways and an overall (fascinating) approach he keeps on questioning.
No matter their set-up though, they'd still make fantastic tunes, no matter what they use or how they make it : they create music first and foremost. And they do it according to their own, personal vision. They just happen to use and master algo/generative techniques. Same could be (obviously) said about Ae.

I'll paraphrase WF (from memory) : thanks to his system, he never starts from a blank page, and I think it's crucial here. And his system has the ability to generate countless starting points by pressing a button on his Lemur UX. He stores ideas he might re-use later, disregard the rest and then starts performing his instrument / recording whenever he feels inspired. You can't remove the performance from the equation.

As I'm humbly patching my own tools in similar fashion, I find it especially challenging and compelling to channel and interact with what the computer can generate into something musical and personal. To easily isolate, replicate, alter... the generated data, to shape these into musically relevant ideas. I'm happy I'm (slowly) getting there.

Oh and you don't need anything nerdy to compose algorithmically : just set compositional rules and write your score accordingly. Not sure it will sound good as is though.

Did you change your message. I could have sworn you said buffer manipulation:. I wanted to ask what you had planned for that.

Nope ? To be honest I have no clue how I'd do it, I'm too much of a novice. But you just gave me tons of ideas and I now have to figure that out , so thank you !

Can't wait to hear what you'll do with Max/msp ! No regret about the monome Grid ? It can be a great controller for a Max homemade sequencer !

Thanks friend ! I'm learning as I patch, and make some nice progress everyday so I'm thrilled. I'm now getting satisfying melodies with generative sequencers I can freeze/unfreeze on the fly, totally or partially, which is something I've been dreaming of for 2 decades now. I rely a lot on some of the new 8.3 objects, lovely stuff : audio rate sequencing is awesome, so sharp and flexible.

While I loved my monomes, I don't regret selling them one bit. All my gear is easily replaceable if needed, I appreciate that. I was getting paranoid touring with my then super rare / hard to replace monomer(s).
