Anyone watmmers attending their gig in Venice? I'm going solo, so would be cool and awesome to hang out with other fellow ae_stans before/after the gig! Could even catch a beer or something, who knows! Cheers 🍻

Wish I could! But I can reveal as much as that it was heavily based around the material from London B last year! First/Middle part was pure scifi, idm glitchy madness (I even think I heard sounds from the ep7 era in between, but couldn’t tell for sure) Last half was proper hip hop destruction. When the lights went on again I was like wow, just… wow! wtf, how? WOW 😵🤯

The lads really are at the top of their game atm! Envious at the Dublin-goers

ooof. Good.

still don’t get why they played the other set in Krakow for example.

That's probably what they felt like doing. Should they have consulted you first?

yes, of course.

it appears, you want to hear more. 😈 So please consider this extra expanded internet brain fart by me for you:

that second half of London B is easily among the best AE, period. Orgasmic psychedelic flow. Just keeps going and going and it’s extremely fantastic. The standard set on the other hand has nothing that comes remotely close, is somewhat disjointed to my ears. Listening to it, it doesn’t tickle much. I hear the beat programming, I hear the sounds, I’m not particularly touched. It has just one part that I truly like, that kinda melodic section in the last 10, 15 minutes.

and I’m not alone with this bias.

Now in Venice, they kind of started with that ending bit from the standard set, and meshed it into London B second half. That, is very nice! Congs to everyone who was there to get blasted.

Yeah everyone seems to love the 'B' set, especially the last half hour

The first 40 mins of the 'A' set are a bit more...divisive. There's some good stuff in there but it's a tough listen and not particularly well suited for playing through a live rig IMO.

"A" set is indeed difficult but it's a huge grower and rewards deep listening. It's good shit. I agree it probably doesn't work well live though, especially for people who haven't heard it yet. Tooo much going on. Maybe that's why they did it again? Give people who have heard the material a chance to experience it that way. This probably reopens the whole debate about Ae's material requiring extensive exposure just to be able to enjoy, and whether it's worth it, but I say it definitely is

I like it all. To be fair, I'm also keen to hear these "pieces" iterated differently, and I also appreciate the variety of the ongoing sets that have more of that London B DNA injected into them. For me, though, it's mostly because I enjoy the variety as opposed to my necessarily preferring elements that premiered in London B (although I would probably be in the mood to hear those London B elements more often than the material presented in the core sets because much of the core stuff is oddly anxiety-inducing or anxiety-enhancing for me in a way that I've never really found Autechre to previously be.

I only now find the time to write about the live show in Venice. I didn't even have the chance to check watmm in those days, so I didn't see this thread. Sin.
btw, before ae start, the space was completely shrouded in smoke, everything was white and at least as indistinguishable as the darkness would be shortly thereafter:

image.thumb.jpeg.f88a66e778a688f2058eab5e91a33c45.jpeg

...Darkness falls and a variation of the middle section of the previous year's sets begins, but guided by an insistent kick that starts to crack from straight. The volume is loud as never before, almost painful, sunn0))) ears calvary style (I've always complained about low volumes in the past, fine, this time they deflowered my ears: the safest method so that people don't talk during the set for sure). As I fall down in the magnificent maelstrom I realize that the sounds are increasingly less distinct. I don't understand shit anymore. I curse the sound engineer... then here's an ancient roundup of melting thoughts, catastrophic memories ... ok... I exonerate the sound engineer and curse myself and the concoction I inhaled without taking into account that I'm now an old fart. When I return to the world of the living, it's the hip hop phase, I estimate I missed half the set. But, well, hearing that thing live is different, the snare is more of a thunderous burst of light fracturing a galaxy floating in amniotic fluid. Nah, indescribable. Now I await soundboards as a messianic event.
A friend recorded it: he has yet to give me the file (which I will post here), but the quality is terrible.

I'm going through the dublin second half: what the fuck!!!

Judging based on the droid interview + my having been to the Dublin gig, it seems that Sean and Rob really do love Dublin. I've only been there for a few days but it seemed great, filled with down to earth but uniquely brilliant people you can just have a fun chat with at the pub.

Have to say that whenever I've seen them live and then heard recordings afterwards (or the other way around): It is always exquisitely tuned to the venue. Last time for me was Dublin, and Dublin was second half of London B and then new stuff I hadn't heard before and I was amazed at how well it came over. It's still a completely different thing. Sure, it's different material, but it seems like they always aim for the very best in their soundchecks, so I'll just go ahead and assume that the A set must be a real trip, especially in the dark. That said, so far I'm not as fond of A as I am of B, either.
