My hope

I'd just like to briefly post something that has been at the back of my mind.

We all know the internet and computers are changing our social behaviour, habits, social interaction and just generally how people live their lives.

We also know that this particular technology has negatives and positives. For an example, a positive point being that you can wikipedia pretty much anything and you can get the info you want, negative that real social interaction are less occurant, thus lesser skill.

Personally, I hope that because of the internet - it will:

- Help people realise that most people are generally good & that we should learn to get along (people in different countries etc)

- Give people better education by enabling them to learn about anything. (Though, with a particularly bad upbringing, you're going to get some of the kids that just want to join gangs, start violance and have no drive for learning)

- Hopefully education will disperse gang members by showing them the way for oppertunity in their lives

From what I've experienced, the internet (wikipedia etc) has been such a massive impact on my life that I use it daily. I'd love to see this coupled with some new voluntary training scheme where volunteers canteach others for free (or nominal fee) by further helping them. (kids, teenagers etc) I don't mean school in any way, more rather people who are passionate about the subject in the first place teaching.

What do you think? is the internet bad or good?

Are we going to have kids on facebook not interacting with each other?

Is there going to be a boom of intelligent, self motivated kids that learn anything they want via internet based education systems (including wikipedia)

Are kids going to get fatter and fatter by playing the wii instead of going outside?

I'd love to know your thoughts and sensible ones if you don't mind.

the information to provide gansters for a better opportunity in life, has been there all along. the internet is pretty much just a more convenient public library. just because the library is there though, doesnt mean theyre going to jump inside and start to learn. the key is to teach them at a young age what is right and what is wrong, and why, before they develop a more permanent negative, immoral mindset

so its my opinion that a shift in todays youth attitude will only happen through education at a very young age

or something

you know, i figured the internet would do all of these things too, perhaps not exactly how you framed it, but something similar. knowledge is now so easily accessible, and communication broadens people's perspective of others and how they live.

but unfortunately i think it hasn't done too much yet.

just look at the millions of comments on youtube or cracked.com for example. i can't help but think that although anonymity is partly responsible for people's online behavior, there might just be a real ignorant jackass behind the "nice video faggot" or "you're gay, go kill yourself african american".

The internet is second only to Skins in the threat it poses to the moral fibre of our vulnerable, vulnerable youth.

I like some of your points and I think we can all agree that there is a fuckload of time spent by these younger people that just reflects them in real life.

I think et is right in that unless you give them the opportunity to live a different[ way when they are first being taught, they are bound to these idiotic group behaviours.

Though, there's no doubting that the internet being so easy to use for good knowledge (wikipedia etc) that it could easily spark off an individual to be intrigued and to learn. - I'll be on wikipedia and because there are hyper links within articles, I then learn about that. For example - boats. How boats are made. The materials. How materials are composed of particles etc etc.

It flowers in all directions really. Just think of how much of an advantage a young inventor or scientist has these days. They must be in their element. As are filthy little pervs.
