PS3 and PS3 Slim Price Now 299USD/Euro

If you ever needed a reason/excuse to pick up a PS3 and/or Blu-Ray player for an affordable price, now's the time - Sony announced starting tomorrow, all PS3 models are 299.00 and come September 1, a new PS3 Slim model (120GB HDD) will be available that is 33% smaller and 36% lighter, and consumes 43% less power than previous models.

Sears and K-Mart (US) both have pre-order pages up for the Slim model, and all retailers should be applying the price change to existing stock by tomorrow.

Other notable reveals are a free copy of Gran Turismo PSP for owners in Europe that register their new PSPGo between October 1 (the day it goes on sale) and October 10th, and major improvements and updates to the PlayStation Store, as well as a 3.0 Firmware for the PS3.

In addition, a E-Book service is coming to PSP, with Marvel Comics being a big supporter, as well as "Minis", small apps and games under 100MB for PSP via the PlayStation Store.

Damn - I may have to re-consider my PS3 hate - great pricepoint at 299 and it looks like t3h sex - and the 120 gb hard drive is a win. . . still sad it's not backwards compatible.

There's been more and more rumours about PS2 games coming to the PSN Store, so I would reckon it's just a matter of time before they make PS2 emulation via software a reality. I wouldn't let that hold you back, especially if you have a PS2 already if you really had a jonesing to play a PS2 game.

One of the coolest things I've set yet (well, there's two) are the addition of animated themes for the PS3 (see video below) as well as the addition of WATER to LittleBigPlanet!

PS3? More like PSGay!

LOL, Nerd Rage :emotawesomepm9:

That's actually a much better solution for me - I had a PS2 waaay back in the day, but missed out on a lot of games that came out later (shadow of the colossus for example). If they were downloadable, so much the better.

Now, where did I leave that spare 299$ at?

NOTE: the current 160GB model drops to 399.00 from 499.00, and will be phased out as the Slim will be the only model on offer after September 1 as new stock.

Europeans: unless you're gonna hold out for the slim, ASDA has some good deals on PS3s and comes with Tiger Woods 2010 free!

These pricecuts are intruiging, but does anyone else think trying to make a console smaller is kind of redundant? Its not exactly something youre going to be carrying around with you and the xbox got along fine being gigantic for years. I feel like sony shouldve invested more money into making their games easier to develop. Anyways, i'd probably get one if i had a shitload of money to burn

I know 1 person who has a ps3 and everyone else has a 360, meaning if I switched then I'd just be playing with that one guy (who only plays NHL). If there was a way to XBL players on the new ps3 then I might be interested.

Do you work for Sony Joyrex?

LOL, no - just a big fan of their game consoles, that's all.

unfortunately, that's still a rumour, as the video I posted makes no mention about PS2 backwards compatibility, and I'm sure something as significant as that would be making headlines.

Making it smaller is a result of lower manufacturing costs (reduced by 70%), and also to appeal to the Japanese market (where one of the original XBOXs' biggest issue was it's size), and to offer consumers something different.

They've reduced development costs, as well as give incentives for developing games, so that will certainly help. As for making it "easier to develop for" in terms of coding, I think the devs that say it's too hard to develop for just don't have the talent in-house to do so, because there are plenty of amazing PS3 games that clearly show that you CAN develop games for it that are clearly well-programmed and use the machine's power.

You need to get over this "physical friends" concept - I have PSN "friends" all over the world that I play with/against, and unless you are playing offline, there's really no need for someone to be in your physical area to play with. Also, the fact you have a Wipeout-themed name and avatar, and the fact that the best Wipeout game (so far) is on PS3... you're missing out!

I doubt it will drop in price for at least another 3 years or more; I wouldn't wait for a drop when the Last Guardian comes out...

Hell, think of it this way - the cheapest BD player (a decent one) you can get is around 130.00USD, so really the PS3 is 170.00USD. XBOX owners who want HD movies are either forced to wait for it to come out via the video store on XBL, or cough up the cash for a BD player as well.

What's BD? And why do I need a BD player?

Blu-Ray Disc - the format is known as BD, like DVD

As for needing it, well, nobody needs anything really other than food and shelter.
