lol @ waiting for dvd.... you have the interwebs people....... lol

You're right. Why wait to be able to watch the whole series at my leisure, in the best audio and video quality, on a large screen, with special features? Better to go hunt down a shitty torrent of one episode, then I'll be... cool.

damn your right the only reason why I stream 720p divx streams of really amazing shows DVI out to my big quality HDTV an hour or two after they premiere on peoples expensive hi definition paid programming and then enjoy the anticipation of seeing what happens next, discussing the progressions on forums is just so I can be cool. you caught me.

I'm glad you have a big penis tv but the point still stands that there isn't anything silly or ridiculous or whatever your first post is meant to suggest, about waiting to watch a series on dvd. If you enjoy reading a book two pages a day, for a month, while I prefer to read through the whole thing in one sitting, at the end of the month, does it matter?

no I am just in love with the ability to watch movies and tv shows for free immediately streaming in 720p and think its cool that I can go on forums with intelligent people and discuss the incremental progressions of elaborate fictional dimensions. I continue to strongly promote the ability to do such a thing as I know this pirate paradise will be shut down in many circumstances in the near future.

but I absolutely understand your point your perspective of wanting to watch a season without weekly interruption, I have enjoyed doing that with series I find out about late. Sometimes I get kind of impatient going fuck I have to wait a week to find out what happens but I'm realizing more and more that the week to week partitioned experience to be more fun in the long run.

That's why I was waiting. Being able to digest large chunks of The Wire in one sitting was conducive to happy Wire-watching, so I'ma stick with the formula.

  • 8 months later...

so did anyone end up watching the whole thing? i just watched the first episode and thought it was ok, didn't think too much of some of the characters (the goofy white guy for example), but it has potential.

another thing i didn't like was the scene with the posh uk reporter, who i felt was there to represent all of europe and its snobby ways, outsiders who just doesn't "get it", saying stuff like

"for the sake of argument, let's say new orleans was once a great city", and "well i suppose if you're a fan of the music, which has rather seen its days, let's be honest, or the food, a provincial cuisine which many would say is typically american. too fat, too rich blablabla", as if noone outside of new orelans is able to appreciate real american culture.

anyway, off to watch ep2.

i watched it it wasnt to great (not like the wire) i guess it was mostly good in everything but there just wasn't a good story really in it? i mean there is like a billion storys in it and they never really connect except for a a few character relations and i didnt find any of the mini storys super interesting you know, at least in the way there presented. i wondered if it would be better if someone edited the whole series into episodes which focus only onto the separate characters/storys it would be better.... but imo anyone who raves like its the greatest tv series on the level of the wire is delusionated

data - your reservations are quite accurate and I shared them throughout the entire first season...overall, I'd have to say it's a disappointing series. Steve Zahn drives me fucking crazy, I literally cringe through every one of his scenes. Sometimes, I try to convince myself he's just an ironic character, but it doesn't help. He's an absurdly earnest douche bag hipster twat. I ended up feeling more or less the same way about the John Goodman character. I loved Janette's storyline with the struggling bistro but that fizzled out thanks to a terrible decision by the idiot writers.

Other highlights: Khandi Alexander as Ladonna and Wendell Pierce as Antoine, who basically rescues every scene he's in and generally makes the show watchable.

I really enjoyed the first season... aside from Steve Zahn's character, who watched a bit too much School of Rock, and who I thought destroyed a lot of the balance/integrity in the series, the cast was solid. Wendell Pierce, as Overlook stated, and Clarke Peters were excellent. Khandi Alexanders was great too but, to be picky, her stereotypical, although accurate, black-girl-with-an-attitude portrayal got under my skin... the way her face would contort unsettled me, lol.

I wish they fleshed out Goodman's character some more... the demise of his character shattered me a bit granted not for the sake of his story but at the thought he wont be there for season two :(

One last bit that bothered me was how formulaic it became and its almost commercialized-telethon-plegdrive way of showing support to the city (celebrity appearances and such).

Just being picky... was definitely show of the year for me.
