should i mixer ?

Recommended Posts

i have two pieces of equipment that i'll be using to record into acid pro or cool edit/ right now i have to plug each one into the (external) soundcard one at a time each time i want to record / i thought of using a mixer but right now i have my tt's plugged into my computer and it has a real nice sound and i heard that if i were to buy a small mixer the sound quality probably won't be good

does anyone else in this forum plug stuff like this and not use a mixer?

lol. Love this usage of the word.

Just get a Mackie if you want to deal with a mixer. They're not that expensive. I suggested an audio interface (or in this case a better audio interface) so that you could just skip the mixer and mix directly in the box and therefore have more control over your final mix.

I use a mixer during the process of making music, but then I track everything directly into the computer with my interface, skipping the mixer.

This is the cheapest mixer I could find with this many features. I bought it a few months ago, it definitely does the job. I needed a decent mixer with AUX for selective outing to a loop pedal for performances but I have been using it to all the time now. (I also use an Alesis Io|26 which has no EQs and many other things but has 8 channel recording)((things like that are going to cost quite a bit more) The EQs sound pretty good, it's definitely a great deal for the price. The USB interface is only 2 channels but you can use this mixer for a lot of purposes.

$130 new from 32 sellers

yeah i have a behringer mixer that i bought as an upgrade to the built in mixer in my cassette 4 track. it was fucking great for that job, cos the built in mixer is truly appalling.

i've also been using it as a too-lazy-too-unplug-shit front end to my audio interface. jam on 8 hardware synths live and then just hit record. no need to overdub. all good.

but. the other day i was tracking a tune and i plugged the synths directly into the interface and they just sounded soooooooo much better...

so yeah. it's a cliche for a reason. behringers are shit.

Older Behringers were just hind of hissy was the most problems I had ever seen with them. I know their gear gained a pretty bad wrap over the years but this is the newest generation of their value mixers. ITS A FUCKING 130 DOLLARS AND HAS USB DIRECT RECORDING AND ALL THOSE FEATURES. How can you really go wrong for that price when a fellow watmm user is saying they have had one for months and are recommending it (mind you I am definitely a snob to the details I am no lazy yeah I guess it works person) it works GREAT. Absolutely NO complaints after using it for so many different purposes.

Tell Daft Punks expensive production team that their BCR2000's are Behringers... Even companies that get bad wraps can make some great stuff you should have to be smart.... and vise versa... Companies that everyone says are THE shit can make some crappy shit shit.

I own a lot of Behringer gear. The majority of it (like the BCR2000) is in no position to threaten my audio signal path. Other stuff, like the stompboxes, are just effects I use from time to time.

The mixer colours the sound of every single instrument in your setup, 100% of the time. With modern multi-input interfaces a mixer isn't really necessary. So in the case of a mixer, I'd either get a good one with desirable tonal qualities, or if I couldn't afford one, I'd go straight into the interface. If necessary I'd upgrade to an interface with more inputs.

Stompboxes colour the sound of your signal 99.99% of the time, there are very few stompboxes with true bypass. I have played guitar for around 12 years, I have tried so many different stomp boxes, signal processors, digital modelers, amps etc.. . I have definitely seen what hiss, buzz, signal degrading sounds like and I A/B my guitar/vocal/bass tones with different things out of the signal chain every time I am deciding if I am going to return something I bought. I can assure you that $130 mixer provides little to no colouring on the tonality of what its presented with.

Like I said I have a $400 dollar Alesis Io | 26 firewire with 8 xlr/8th pre amps, I love its recording sound quality and that I can bus 4 different mixes into 4 different stereo outputs but its not very fun to use a unit like that without a dedicated midi controller setup to control it. Its very nice having traditional mixer controls.

gear snobbery :( nothing wrong with behringer for the price! sure, spend more if you want but you won't find a lot else for the same money.

Very few companies put the exact same level of quality into their manufacturing year after year after year. Nothing is really that consistent. New engineers get hired, old engineers get fired, manufacturing facilities change, manufacturing regulations change. It's like loving or hating a football time for 20 years that has gone through hundreds of line up changes, owner changes, coach changes, stadium changes etc. etc. etc. etc.

SHIT CHANGES like it or not. Your 93' Saab might have been designed by completely different engineers, with a completely different CEO and made at a completely different manufacturing FOR BETTER OR WORSE than the 99' Saab your thinking of buying on Ebay auto.
