the closest thing to a manual i've read for it is kim stanley robinson's mars trilogy

excellent, extremely plausible science fiction which deals with very real questions like separate political factions developing on mars, some of whom are earth-seperatist

awesome, i'll check this out.

terraforming mars is something i've been thinking about a lot recently. afaik the main issue is how to make the core liquid, for the magnetic field to form. that would help protecting the colonies from the solar storms.

well, that and water :)

it even isn't that cold up there, i was quite surprised to read that the temperatures are up to -5 deg celcius!

they go the domed city/algae/greenhouse gas route in those books

he normally writes historical fiction, so robinson is well qualified for the job.

they build a space elevator and attach it to phobos and... well, i won't spoil it for you, but halfway through the first book in the series there's a crowning moment of awesome involving it :)

cool, i read somewhere about the greenhouse gas route and it seemed pretty viable. if we're talking about a method to simultaneously warm up the atmosphere and provide CO2 for plants to produce oxygen.

yeah the most realistic way would be to pump that shit full of enough CO2 to bring the temp down so liquid water can form. the only forseeable problem would be pumping too much CO2 into the atmosphere. can we take some back out? can we do that here on earf?

fuck yeah, we could just send some of our (excessive) CO2 over to mars. two planets 'repaired', humankind saved. continue to the next planet.

how much of CO2 would planet mars need in order for the chain reaction (releasing carbon from the soil due to warming up) to start?

yeah, that would have a bearing on things. the key is getting the balance right... it's a system with many variables. if you were to introduce an algae or lichen, it would speed up CO2 production, but it would also increase albedo... it's like a calculus equation with about 30 variables.

The only reason i would go into space is because we would probably have to drink each others pee. If we dont have to drink each others pee, i'll just stay where i am.

so we don't have to use these??
