Going to make a reasonable attempt to play and perhaps beat Demon's Souls... downloaded the PDF strategy guide and loaded it on the iPad to make adventuring easier...

A few tips...

If possible, try to figure out what sorta weapons/items you intend on using, as this will guide the way you spec. For instance, some weapons have requirements of x amount of str and y amount of dex. Beyond the requirements, the effectiveness of the items is dependent upon how much weight you put into stats (so a sword could require str and dex, but its effectiveness is decided upon how much you go beyond in just dex). Other stats you won't necessarily go above certain levels (like endurance). So do your best to not throw points around randomly, they matter far more then you would think.

You can choose to play offline if you don't want to engage Black Phantom players who invade your game, but they can only do-so if you are alive. I frequently chose to play the game offline when doing level 3-3 (google Old Monk to find out why). 4-1 is also a very popular gank spot. Black Phantoms can only enter your game if they are within 10 soul levels as you, so you still might have a fighting chance against them. You can always PS3 button -> Quit Game if you want them gone.

Skip magic entirely imo and go for ranged weapons like the composite bow. The range in a bow and range in a spell isn't even comparable.

Feel free to PM me if you get stuck. I'd help you out but my char is SL 130 I believe.

I still haven't beaten it and it was one of the first games I bought. All I really need to do is beat the last boss too.

I don't think you are actually at "the last boss" then ...

It seems you're right, well I am stuck on old king allant from 1-4. Actually, I'm stuck on the part where you have to fight that dragon, somehow I made it past him without killing him my first time and killed a black phantom(ostrava's?). Then died in one hit of Old King's shockwave. Now I am too lazy to figure out how to kill the dragon, and I really don't like the idea of tediously using a bow and arrow for 20 minutes(really I just need to work on Bow upgrades and soul level upgrades). Or maybe I could just rush past him on the stairs, I seriously thought I had killed him before but hes still there. Also, I still need to beat old king doran(if he qualifies as a "boss") but he is FUCKING difficult.

all you need is the clever rats ring, a good bow and a bunch of arrows. stand directly under him and take him down for good. 10 mi utes tops. its worth it.

and bring something to drain your health to utilize the ring.

My son and I started playing last night, and after watching me try and beat Red Eyes (the knight in the tower) unsuccessfully, he took over and instead of fighting Red Eyes, he managed to unlock the portal to the first Demon, the Phalanx. We didn't realize once you enter it's chamber you cannot leave until it's beat, and our damn sword broke in the first few minutes, forcing us to go back to the basic initial weapon (that little dagger thing). We had plenty of Cresent Moon Herbs, but we couldn't (and still can't) figure out how to equip the Fire Bomb on the up directional pad so we can throw them with some degree of accuracy. My son had to go to bed (school night), so I took over again, and while we were just going to quit, I didn't want to lose the 4000+ souls we had collected up to that point, so I went ahead and methodically set about killing the things that protect the Phalanx, healing whenever I got to 10% life or so. It took 45 minutes, but I beat the Phalanx with just the dagger, and got the first Demon Soul, so now there's a waypoint inside his chamber, and my life meter now is extended fully. Should I try taking on Red Eyes or should I do the sneaky thing and try and push him down the stairwell to his death and then loot his corpse for the shield he has?

Enjoying this game immensely - can't believe I set this one aside so quickly when I first got it...

One aspect of demon's souls is that you will run into early enemies that are way too difficult to take on at your level. That knight is just a basic enemy(that respawns every time you enter 1-1) that is really hard who is blocking an even harder boss. At this point I would maybe try doing 1-2 or 2-1(or 3-1 or 4-1 or .... maybe not 5-1 quite yet), build up some souls, upgrade things, fix your weapon. Save the Red Eyed Knight for later, you will run into them again in other places too.

Also, to set up equiping fire bombs you need to go into the start menu, go to equipment, and there will be 5 slots where you can equip herbs, lotus', throwing objects and cycle through with the down button to be used by pressing square when they are selected. You can also equip turpintine and when you [square] it will apply fire to your main weapon so you can cause fire damage, it makes the first boss much easier. Also stick white stuff is like turpintine, it gives you a temporary enchantment on your weapon for extra damage.

Another tip: Don't consume the demon soul that the phalanx boss dropped(or any other bosses) because you can use them to craft special weapons and learn special spells later on.

As far as the Phlanax goes, for future reference, you basically did what you were supposed to do, it hates fire. Apply turpintine to your sword to set it on fire, and unload all your firebombs. The smaller enemies regen, and the Phlanax itself regens health, so haste in this boss fight is actually important.

I don't think I consumed it yet... how would I know? Is it a conscious choice, like "Consume Demon Soul? Y/N"

yeah, if you go into your items(start menu) they show up at the bottom of the list along with herbs and thing, you can and should "use" or "consume" the soldier's/hero's souls(which is a one time use item like grass that you will find on the ground but which just gives you a number of souls to your count, i would only use these right before upgrading/spending souls), but don't be tempted to use the boss souls unless you really want to. Yeah, it will ask you to confirm "Y/N?" when you select it from the menu.

Boss souls can also be used to make weapons/items later on in the game. I'd hold onto them personally until you are diving thru wiki's figuring out the best way to max out your char, prolly around the 4-2 area...

It's only £15.91 on Amazon at the moment. Although I haven't really previously played this type of game I think I'll have to try it out at that price.

It doesn't become truly punishing until you get to the poison lands. When I first got there it put me off for a few weeks. Going back to it with a fresh mind i was able to do it. It also took a while to get used to the world tendencies. Once you master them it is really rewarding. I really like that the game was designed so well that when you die it doesn't feel like the game screwed you over. You know it was you fault when you die. You do need to finish it soon...the wait for Dark Souls is almost over!

Yeah, I finally figured it out - building up my level, as I foolishly attempted to go into the mines and the wolves (aka War Dogs) tore my ass up... Gonna take your advice and keep the Demon Souls for the important stuff. Right now trying to work my way through the gauntlet (the section with the dragon who keeps flaming the bridge) and make it to the end.

Those dogs can be a pain, but no amount of leveling or equipment switching will help you. The best thing to do is have the Thiefs Ring on (you should have got it from 1-1) and try to lure them into the hallway, otherwise they can circle you and get you from all angles. You can block one a time if you have the endurance, but if multiples stack they can break your shield. When the timing is right, use R2.

Speaking of which, I'm not sure if you noticed this or not, but depending upon which class you started off as, you might be having a hard time with the miners in 2-1. Many enemies have weaknesses to specific weapon/dmg types. This isn't that big of a problem later in the game, but in the beginning it can be frustrating. Those miners are weak to piercing so I either recommend using the pick axe on them or the long sword, but you have to use R2 on them. They should only take 1-3 hits depending upon how highly you specced str (and dex in the pick axe's case).

Another example of this is the rolling skeletons in 4-1 seem nigh impossible at first, until you get a hammer or mace then they are cake (1-2 hits). This is one of the reasons I start as Royality (for the spell that most enemies seem weak to) or Priest (For the mace, to clear out 4-1, cuz lots of good items are hidden in there).

And speaking about that, feel free to upgrade your weapons, but I wouldn't go above +4 until you know what you are doing.

The Battlefield 3 beta is awesome! graphics are still sub-par IMO, but the gameplay is amazing. Very visceral. BF is like a thinking man's CoD.

In my first play through i missed out on a very powerful fire spell because I wasted my demon souls. It really makes you learn from your mistakes.

Dark souls midnight release tonight! :D

I'll be in bed at midnight. Getting mine tomorrow right after work. Ohhh Yeeah!

We started playing Dead Space 2, as usual, 4 meters wide on my wall. Some scary shit, I like how the went for better voice actors than in the first game.

I made a deal with my friend (who is usually way too scared of games like that to play them) that he had to play for a little bit. I recorded a part of it (bad quality and German, but still kinda lol):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsmS7uSQnRM

Haha, good stuff. Reminds me of those old "Mesh Does Doom 3" videos.

You should subject your friend to the first Fatal Frame. It may very well kill him. By far the scariest game I have every played.

Dark souls is eating me alive. Love it.

Did you beat the first boss after the tutorial?

I loved the way the whole world turned from dreary to beautiful with the sun beaming through the clouds!

Dark Souls is pure sex. I don't even know what to say. You should see me in my room by myself when I manage to down a boss.... Epic moments.

A buddy and I have been going through the game and sharing what we figure out along the way over voice chat. I made a Pyromancer and have been mostly been using axes. He's going for a dex based build.

Shit is sooo good! *slaps wrist*
