Really seems like the price of digitals is going up fast lately. This one's over $16.

The other problem I have with articles like this and other progressive crusades is that they create a lot of drama and controversy around relatively minor issues and that sucks all the energy out of the room for the more important issues that really affect people's lives. If you want to address musical colonialism then first go after the music business that drives local acts out with American top 40 garbage. It's like arguing that vegans are destroying local food culture and ignoring KFC and McDonalds. Very much so and dictating tastes more than ever before since with all the new music coming out now having the biggest marketing budget counts more than anything.

Also, while I agree it would be good for sequencers to support other tunings directly, synths like Absynth have supported user-definable tunings for many years now.

I've been living in Asia for over ten years now and the pop music people actually listen to doesn't use non 12-tone tunings. Anybody that's really concerned about "colonialism" in music first needs to go after the US major labels and their insidious marketing.

I've been toying with the idea of building a new releases notification service for a while now. It seems like no matter how many newsletters & new release feeds I sign up for I miss new stuff from artists & labels I like. I prefer not to get too involved with social media but it does seem like one of the more reliable ways of keeping on top of new stuff.

It seems like describing particular styles or techniques as masculine or feminine isn't useful and just serves to create boundaries. Why not use terms like noisy or busy or aggressive instead? One of the best developments of recent years or is that women are much more involved in all styles of electronic music and making some great records, some of them very abrasive and aggressive.

The idea that there's such a thing as masculine sound design and, by implication, feminine sound design seems sexist to me and harmful and limiting to musicians of all genders.

There are loads of women making electronic music these days with strong, agressive beats. Why does this have to be yet another gender identity thing?

Atol Scrap is a classic. Definitely recommended. Arovane has been doing some great music lately too.

"'Atol Scrap' is still one of the most perfect specimins of an era we'd rather forget. Imagine vintage Autechre clatterbeats assembled with a bassy dub techno mentality and daubed with faint, hazed ambient textures = seriously next level, era-defining biz. It's fair to say that for the most part, IDM hasn't aged well. When it worked, its sounds were absorbed into more forgiving structures (hello trap and grime) and when it didn't, the mess of overly masculine sound design and underwhelming cycling non-melodies irritated more than they impressed, inching closer to history's trashcan with each passing year. " Like most genres predicated on sounding futuristic classic IDM definitely shows its age. But there's no reason we need to forget it and it doesn't have anything to do with masculinity. And for sure Trap & Grime are not aging any better.

Kudos to him for having the courage to take a stand and keep his new music off streaming services. I think his other comments explain why I'm not liking this one as much as his previous work though:

I've been dabbling around in various digital art styles lately and I've been having a lot of fun with it even though I'm very much an amateur. Anyway, if you have stuff you want to release and need cover art for it I'm happy to take a crack at it if you can give me some idea of what you're looking for. It's just for fun and I won't be offended if you don't like my ideas.
