Aleksi Perälä - Spectrum 0/1/2/3/4/5/6/7

In a time when you can just by Komplete and have like 5 million professional presets I find it really surprising and refreshing that some of my favorite electronic music is built from such simple materials. -

Has he explained anywhere what sound sources he is using for this stuff? I know it's all built out of sine waves but I'm curious what specific tools he's using to combine them. Whatever it is he's getting a very rich sound palette out of such a simple model. -

His stuff as Sunken Foal is very well done but not exactly my cup of tea. I'm digging this though. -
Yeah a lot of my favorite records didn’t click into place with me until I’d listened to them many times. In fact many of them first struck me as annoying or confusing at first because they were doing something I didn’t understand right away. I’m trying not to lose that kind of attentive listening in the face of so much stuff I want to check out.

I’ve been listening to MBM since 99% way back in 1990. I haven’t followed his work that closely lately but I still enjoy it when it comes on. My brother is a huge fan so he got the gift.

There’s some interesting production on some of these records but I don’t often find myself in the mood for it. It’s too active to work as background music. I’m mostly liking the new Jam City album. Not sure if it goes in this bucket. FWIW I played 100 gecs for a 20 year old girl I know that’s pretty into music and got a violently negative reaction so I guess not all the kids are into it.

Yeah it's a good problem to have but I've found I have to deliberately focus my listening. I'm just happier getting deeper into a smaller number of albums then skipping around on ten new records every day. They do say that hard times breed better art. That certainly seems to have happened this year.

Most of the stuff I really liked I tried to buy off bandcamp and not just stream so most of it is here: https://bandcamp.com/kuniklo

2020 was the worst year in my memory in every respect but music. There have been so many great releases this year and I feel like I haven't had time to give most of them the attention they deserve. Anybody else feeling a bit overwhelmed? Previously I felt there was a lot of new music coming out but I could sift through it pretty quickly and skip most of it but this year has been a bonanza.

I was really into their EPs but their last album fell a bit short for me. I'm curious to see what they do next though. -
Yeah this is good stuff.

Leila - Like Weather (Modern Love re-release)

I remember it got good reviews at the time, it just wasn’t what most people expected from Rephlex. I never had a chance to listen to it because music was expensive back in those days. -
Did we ever discuss this? From last year but candy for Braindance fans.

I don't mind the weekend track. It reminds me of that Ford & Lopatin album. I like every track on this album but it hasn't really cohered into an album in my head yet. It sounds more like a collection of interesting tracks. Maybe the disjointedness is the point? -
Really interesting fusion of aggressive African percussion and cinematic soundscapes. I haven't heard anything quite like this before.

He’s one of the best doing the modular synth improv thing.

I’m struggling with the vocals on the first couple of tracks.

Yeah sferic is one of the most consistent labels. I like almost everything they put out.

Liking this on first spin. You definitely want to listen to this on something with some bass. That cover though..
