I love that plasticy Korg sound, it's the audio equivalent of the alienated, existential dread of having a bad psychedelic experience at a mall.

Listening to that Barker jam though, it's pretty nice. It's what I would do when told to mess around for 10 mins. Maybe I don't know the Elektron gear that well but those don't sound like presets to me either. That plate reverb makes me think I should finally hook up my Koma Field Kit again.

Can you upload the PD patch? PD is a total enigma to me, I want to see what exactly you did. The notes your patch generates sound proper. Probably rarely would listen to the full 40 minutes but thats because ambient usually isn't intense enough for me, also I don't really like these piano like synth sounds. The drones that occasionally form high pitched overtones when they overlap are nice, though. I also like the panning

Basically the ableton link on top right triggers the "clock", and everything else does something every X subdivisions. You can replace this with a PD metro object if you dont use Live.

It is kind of a mess and the 2019.12.25 patch probably will not work without tweaks (but the 2020.01.01 one will). They are both works in progress because I wanted to clean them up a bit and make it easier to sort of shape the generativeness of one channel stack.

Sieve is basically a way to turn steps on or off. If the toggle is set, you it will pass the step number to the simplestep sequencer which will output a note pitch value. Banging the other input will randomize the toggles.

Maybe I should take some time to make all of this more clearer... let me know if you have questions getting it to work.

Oh and currently the random sequences will just be anything in -12 to +12 st range so if you want to kick out bad notes which do not match the harmony, you need to figure something out. I used the Live Scale effect to force everthing to a nice harmony.

Sure, I hope I remember to do it tonight when I get home.

It's basically 5 16-step sequences, that fade in-out by MIDI velocities and after each fade out the sequence is randomly re-generated. I basically picked 6-7 notes in more or less the same scale so they do not conflict harmonically.

I don't really like the piano sounds either, especially the parts where it really sounds like someone is banging the keys. Played softly it sounds much better, maybe because it does not sound like a piano. I spent a lot more time building the patch than mixing and choosing the sounds, so all of it is mostly the default patch on the Roland XV-5080.

Anyways, glad you like it. ?

^ Wow ... so the “euro” actually means something ...

Surprising since all of the measurements make more sense in inches ... oh well.

My impression is that "rack" comes from standard equipment racks, which are mostly in inches, and "euro" comes from Doepfer or whoever started making standardised 0-5V modules that fit into those equipment racks neatly.

  5. Definitely agreeing with @user here on most points. I guess the economy of scale of the Eurorack standard is still not big enough for being able to ship containers full of the stuff.

I wonder what is the threshold where Behringer will say that OK, this amount is enough to spin up a production line. Probably not below 10k units or something, but how many modular addicts exist in the EU actually? ?

  6. But my... my.. hand-wired sustainable home made circuit boards upcycled from vintage 80s VHS machines I dug out of the landfill with my bear hands... you can't just say all this effort costs just 5 bucks! It's artisanal, I spent like 30 minutes watching youtube soldering tutorials!

  7. Not true, the costs include both the physical enclosure and a power delivery for 7-8 modules which is way more complicated than just a power brick. Besides if we are comparing this with a white label power brick made in some low quality weird mass factory somewhere then for not shorting my expensive modules and adding power noise to my sound I think I would like something with a better quality anyway.

Not saying that Behringer could not deliver a quality product cheaper though. ?

Buying a case for a modular synth is one of the reasons I haven't started on one. It's like...you need a small fortune before you even start buying modules.

I remember there were some cheap DIY-sort of cases too priced at under 100 bucks which I thought was not too bad.

But then again I believe this is like complaining about syringe cost before starting a heroin habit so whatever mind trick excuse is good that keeps you from addiction. ?

  9. I went and got it yesterday. I did not have a lot of chance to play it on the spot, but it left a good impression. From the reviews I know that you can play it with finger tapping, hands and sticks so should be plenty of variety. In particular, I am interested in getting the foot controllers so I can play hihats and bass drum like I would on a real drum kit.

Not too worried in hurting myself playing it too much... history has shown that my workflow is basically sitting on the laptop in the middle of a pile of hardware and not touching any of it. ? In fact I am already feeling a bit of remorse for getting it, but I think that's just because I have not had a proper chance to sit down with the DTX yet.

My dream is to set up a small "drum corner" with the pads and also all the acoustic things I have along with the KOMA field kit so it's a kind of hybrid DIY kit. I also have a load of drum samples I recorded off my MicroX and some AKAI sample CDs that I need to extract the sounds from. Of course in the following year I expect to achieve pretty much 0 of this dream, as evidenced by historical performance. ?

  10. Timing is one thing, too. For me the last time I took time off playing physical drums and then getting back into it was a real scare because I had lost so much muscle memory and coordination so I sucked really bad. Trying to keep myself active in order to avoid all that now..

I found some used Yamaha DTX12M so I am going to try and get some.

Technically skilled and good taste are the hardest, those two things seem to be diametrically opposed in general but especially with drummers.

It's true but you also have to understand that sometimes it gets old really fast if I have to play the same rhythm repeatedly while the guitarist gets to have fun with all of their effects. And then they tell you to play more quietly and stick to the beat while their riffs get more boring and bland after every time we go through the track but hey at least it is now in tune and in tempo, cut down from a nice atmospheric jam into a 4 minute formulaic tune with "bridge" "chorus" and "guitar solo".

Anyways, send me a message if you need a drummer in the Paris area of France.

Think i've posted this , or something similar before - but i have a really limited workspace - about 80cm x 60cm and i have all my stuff compactly organised. I tend to want to have the gear i have all plugged in at once and get a bit itchy to sell stuff if i can't have it all integrated at all times - is this something i just need to get over and maybe work on the premise of plugging in and out different pieces of kit? Is that just a major Gas enabler?

I think it's fine to rotate out things from the "active setup" every once and a while, but have them around so they could be rediscovered. The key point for me is that I should not buy new things unless I have not taken the time to figure out my existing gear (unless it's something basic like new monitors - you can't really work without a way to hear your stuff).

Holy moly I’m over here considering building a lap steel.

This is a really cool idea. I remember seeing a scene in Let's Get Loud where Jack White just hammers together a rudimentary "guitar" out of a plank, a string and a pickup. This sort of hands on stuff is always rewarding in some way.

  13. After having thought about it a little, yeah you are right my drums and snares are not that good. My excuse is that I am much much more comfortable at an acoustic drum kit than working with samples - unfortunately I don't have a way to record a real kit as it is now. It's a slow progress to improve.
